i would put the circuit board with the usb ports sticking out.

the box might be a small pencil case and i would us a hacksaw to drill a hole big enough for the usb ports.

you could have just bought a usb hub on ebay. They normally sell for 1pence and something like £6 postage. If you are in Japan it would be dirt cheap to have it sent through too, and it would look a lot tidier than the box. Attaching that USB underneath the new keyboard could have looked nice too instead of putting it in the cardboard box!

trust me, as tight as we are on money, we don't just buy a new everything. when something breakes the first thing i do is take it apart and see if i can fix it, if i can't THEN i throw it away and get a new one.

My point here is that the apple keyboard doesn't have a powered USB hub. Most of the stuff i use for USB needs power so this wouldn't really work for me, it a good idea though.

thats not a usb 2.0 drive so basically you can only plug a mouse into that. great idea though.
