@lucas66568 Check the Save State folder in the left field of the MAME GUI for games with full save state support. Other games not in that folder may still be able to do save states, though. The defaults are Shift+F7 to save and F7 to load. You need to pick a number from 0-9 to save or load from.
Maybe you chose a game with no save state support. MAME will flash a warning screen to say that it's not supported whenever you try to save state in those games. You can still try it, but it really may not work for some games.
Or, maybe the defaults have been changed. Press tab in-game>Input(general)>User Interface>and scroll down to check the controls for Save/Load State.
Okay I got the cheats to work with the version 0.143u8. This version takes forever to start, and I mean forever and ever, but at least the cheats work, so it's all good. I deleted the 0.132 and 0.142, don;t know how to work with them as far as opening their options. But yeah, it works fine with 0.143 and I couldn't be happier, thank you very much.
@MSfeller Shouldn't take more than 10-20 secs to boot most times. Was your PC busy downloading or something at the time?
I normally avoid any ver. # with "u" in it unless a new game got added that I was dying to check out. The "u" means it's part of the update cycle and not an official stable release. I throw out any "u" ver. I might have tried once the next official release arrives. Official 0.144 shouldn't be far off now.
@neckshredder1 Thanks. Well, I jut opened it now (0.143u8) and it takes about 2 minutes and 50 seconds to open... so yeah, hell of a long time! I didn't know what the "u" stood for, thanks for clarifying. The cheats worked fine though. I'm still trying to get them to work on 0.119, that's one of my favorite versions so far.

@neckshredder1 Yeah, and it crashes with the cheats on. You're right, I will delete it and wait for 0.144. My 0.119 version had the cheat menu on, but now it refuses to accept joystick input, even though it did just fine a few days ago.
@MSfeller I once had a problem with M32++0.119 where I'd been messing around a lot with AVI record and it eventually wouldn't even boot anymore. Delete and a fresh setup fixed whatever was causing it.
I must be unzipping, and organizing directory MAME the wrong way. I downloaded MAME 0.132 (I'm always confused which one I need to download mame0132s.zip or mame0132b.exe, so I download both, unzip then merge them together, probably where I'm going wrong) and it goes straight to a black screen, not to options, audit, etc, like the other ones do. I will delete everything and download just mame0132b.exe instead, and see how it works.
@MSfeller Yeah, it's not a good idea to merge them. Keep each MAME in it's own directory. You can point multiple MAME's to one roms folder if you want, though.

Okay, I downloaded 0.142, got the cheat file, unzipped, pasted the unzipped cheat file inside on my MAME directory, all just like you said. However, MAME 0.142 is different than the others I have, as it does not have that same options, miscellaneous, default game options, etc - it just lets you choose the games and I can't find no cheat menu.

Where are you getting MAME from, Mike? For current MAME it's best use either MAMEUI (always updated directly from MAME source), MAMEPlus! (extra features, can be tricky for newbs), or MAMEUIFX (less features than M+, but more user-friendly). All of those have cheat support in Default Game Options>Miscellaneous.

I know you said get the closest, but I ain't sure if the closest as the older or newer one. I have 3 MAME versions: 32v103, Plus! Plus! 0.119 and one that says only MamePlus, but on the about section it says M+GUI 1.5.2 (but also says 0.14u4, not sure which is the version #). Am I better off getting MAME 0.143? Or 0.142? Or any other?
@MSfeller Apart from the .dat to XML changeover around ver.0.126, I'd still normally just get the cheats for the closest ver. #, regardless of whether the cheats are for a higher or lower ver. #. Eg. for your 0.103 there is a big gap at Pugsy's between 0.81 and 0.105. Even though 0.105 is newer, it's likely that more cheats will show up in 0.103 than with a ver. as far removed as 0.81. If you want more precise matches, google "mameui older versions" and go to the progettosnaps archive...
@TheDeadpoolOwns Yes and yes. With the "Select Character" cheat you can choose any secret characters in MSHVSF, including Norimaro. There's also a "Play with Apocalypse" cheat.

Keep in mind what Pugsy says, "There are currently no guides for the latest cheat engine, this situation MAY change. In the meantime you can check out the FAQ + Guide below as a lot of the information is still relevant."

@neckshredder1 I don't know what i'm doing wrong but when I go to play the games it won't even bring up the cheats option in the menu. I had an older version on my old computer and installed everything perfectly but for some reason it's not working on my current laptop. I followed all the steps but still no cheats.
@ebbowman It could be an issue with your OS then. I'm still on XP but I've heard of a lotta people having problems with all sorts of stuff on newer OS when they forget to "run as administrator". Might be worth investigating.
@DukeOnkled I've never had that problem before. Which MAME build and version number are you trying to use cheats for? Maybe you need a different MAME build with cheat support or a different version number of the cheats file. If your MAME is 0.126 or earlier then you'll need cheat.dat instead of zipped XML. Also, make sure cheats are enabled in GUI options.

So finally after alot of hassel I downloaded MAME32 and did exactley what you did in the video and it worked just fine! Thanks for the video. (Now I can Finally Beat Haunted Castle Without Breaking The Controller First)
@egdqv13234 G'day. Like I showed at about 1:35 in the vid, the cheat file needs to be placed in MAME's root directory. If you already did that then follow the rest of the instructions closely. It sounds like you missed one or more steps somewhere. If you're still stuck come to MameAddicts. It's much easier for me to provide detailed help there than in these crappy little YouTube comments lol!

Not sure what you mean by command line. The MAMEUIFX used in the vid is a GUI (Binary) version, not a Source Code version. The source code versions use command lines and are for more advanced users. The GUI versions add a frontend to the source code and can be used by anyone.

Okay I got the cheats to work with the version 0.143u8. This version takes forever to start, and I mean forever and ever, but at least the cheats work, so it's all good. I deleted the 0.132 and 0.142, don;t know how to work with them as far as opening their options. But yeah, it works fine with 0.143 and I couldn't be happier, thank you very much.
