This is real anal! Despite the collective chops, all the players here have missed the point of what blues is about. SRV & co must be howling with laughter .....
alright, so you wouldn't have played it the same way he would? well he stayed with in the groove, which is what a drummer is supposed to do, he also played with in the emotion of the music, he expressed himself on the kit. He didn't take away from the music at all. when you see a blues guitarist play guitar does he stick with a simple four chord riff? or does he do a little soloing with in the riff? well Virgil took his blues drumming the same way. He played with as much emotion as the Sax.
if i could play like Virgil i would still try to exercise some judgement and taste in respect for all those old blues and jazz guys WHO INVENTED MY ASS DECADES BEFORE I WAS BORN. don't wank until you get to the wank part. that's what the guitar player does, that's what the bass guy does. SUPPORT the band for the head of the tune and each player when they solo. don't poop all over what they are doing.
I love the way Virgil managed to transform a simple Blues into a Planet x son! LMFAO!!!!!! haHAhahahaha, yeah, maybe he was a bit too exited!!!! ahahah freaking awesomeee
If we could play like him, we would..i know i would. those far out odd time fills that he does with ease to land back in the grove, thats Virg just grooving.
why doesnt someone comment on the sax for blowing his brains out, why didnt he just keep to simple scales? Maybe becuase its all Improvised and they are just having fun. for you to say virgil should be playing something more simple..then you dont know him, and for someone who says he usualy defends him. pff
if you wanna watch someone more layed back and a jazz swinger watch steve smith. Virg can grove...but i guess he played what he felt like at the time.
I know that Virgil can play pretty much all styles perfect on drums, but here....either way hes just too high on himself and have to show off....or, the thing I believe, is that they are just having fun!!!
But it would be nicer if Virgil played a simple rockbeat instead, even if I love all hes playing usually!!!
after a certain point, a musician goes for what they feel, and not what others thing they should play.. he was doing what he thought would musically contribute, and was musically satisfying to him
888erkan888, dude, I have to agree with you. I mean, I have all the Virgil Donati Albums, and usualy I'll cut sick on any one who speak trash against him, or anyone who even tries to compare him to Neil Peart. But just for this once......I have to say, that no matter how good he is.......there is just no feel at all in this song. He's really got to avoid playin the Blues altogether in the future
Finally some drummer that understands that hes playing does NOT have much feeling...I mean susually when he plays simple stuff he really shows a great groove, power, simpilcity and some great, but pure and simple fills....here hes playing is an embarressment.
Yeah I also live Virgil and I dont like when drummers talk bad about him...I almost always defend him. But here??....nah
I honestly got no idea what Virgil is thinking. It would have been cool if he kept a simple steady beat...

I like how what virgil plays during the solo is exactly as busy as his... "groove," if you want to call it that. Technical monster, but ABSOLUTELY no feel or taste at all.

omg. you mean practicing crap that teenagers think is cool doesn't lead to good musicianship. youtube has proven that all of virgil's stuff is attainable. but virgil remains stoic in his bullshit ways
I totally disagree about "all of virgil's stuff is attainable" as you rarely see a drummer really get his stuff down totally, especially not to his level of control.
If this is true then why has he been hired by so many top artists? Joss Stone, Mick Jagger, Steve Vai, Bunny Brunel, Michel Polnareff to name a few. Perhaps they cant tell if someone has "feel" (whatever you mean by that. Its not an objective definition btw.)Perhaps they somehow ignore huis lack of feel and just pay him money for the sake of it? Some have said the same of thomas lang and he has worked for everyone!
steve vai? mick jagger? who are they? what do they know about music? they are amatures, that's why they hire virgil.. and they sure know shit about feel :) "practicing crap that teenagers think is cool" lmao!! so,you mean practicing kills your musicianship? that's about as hilarious as the "virgil can't groove" part.. i agree that some stuff he plays here were somewhat irrelevant with blues, but they were jamming for fun you know, not composing a new music piece.. i dig shread jamming! go Virg!!
I have had ENOUGH of this weak arse 4\4 shit.

@112lunar If everyone played like SRV, the world would be deadly boring place. Music is about experimenting.
