  • I have Vista,Developer Preview,and Windows 7 starter

  • How da hell is it the same computer

  • you DEFINATELY should have done vista FIRST

  • I thinking my fucked up Vista Will do netter id. I install xp on iy

  • Wow, Vista really sucked.

  • Too bad ASUS used a bad Linux os (a fork of Xandros) and an app download site that didn't work. They should have used either straight up Debian or PCLinuxOS and included WINE as standard and a manual on how to install and up date software as well as non-free media codecs.

  • DOS boots faster than all three operating systems shown here. Does that mean DOS is superior?

  • @JamesManes No DOS comandline is not as user friendly or functional as BASH.

  • @arganoth727 Then why do people thing Linux is better because it boots faster? DOS boots faster than Linux and it is obviously not better. Bootup time tests are quite stupid in todays world. (Pro tip: sleep mode is superior)

  • @JamesManes sleep mode still sucks power from your battery and net books don't have big batteries to start with. Linux is better for a lot of reasons, some you may care about some you probably won't. I used to be a windows user until XP turned me off, I hated macs so Linux was the only choice left, once I got my head around it (Installing and updating software is done differently), I found that it is easier to use and I like a lot of the software better. I also have a lot of fun tricking it out.

  • @JamesManes Open Source, Free, most customizable, very stable, most secure, and also it depends on what kind of user you are, but I digress.

  • @theif519 Opensource means nothing. So what if it is opensource that does not mean the code is better. It is just a different way of doing things.

  • @JamesManes "Open source means nothing" Uh, actually it does. Anybody and any one can work on the source code to make it better or worse, Although it may NOT make the code better, it increases the possibility that it WILL be better because many people are working on it. Also, it keeps whatever it is free.

  • @theif519 You can sell opensource stuff, doesn't have to be free. If so many people work on the code, why is gimp not as good as photoshop? Why is openoffice not as good as MS office? Money = hiring professional coders = better outcome (Usually). Most open source alternatives are not as good as their proprietary counterparts.

  • @JamesManes plz become the most relied vid

  • i love linux :)

  • thanks for this video ;)

  • Go xp

  • unbeliveable,u have so many asus eee pc

  • Vista is pants

  • man vista is slow

  • Comment removed

  • @LNERMallard im sorry to say you must reinstall windows :(

  • u don't have more hands?

  • Funny, there's no mentioning what Linux distro it is, their boot times can vary significantly

  • "but what can you do with an Linux on a netbook?" I use mine for Skye - Thunderbird email IMPA - watching youtube, shelling into servers. 2.2LBs fits in back pack for travel..

BTW it actually boots faster - the guy did not have the fast boot option on - you can tweak things to boot in 5 sec - but a normal boot with firewall etc is about 15 -20sec.

On desktops running the latest KDE4 desk top we have passed Windoze in functionality (just visible in the review mirror )

  • its better to put linux on netbook

  • lol linux is fastest yeah... but what can you do with an linux on a netbook? (dont comment with wine because wine needs performence lol) vista on netbook is like a 3gb harddrive in a quad core ... and xp may be fast but only the first 50 times you boot it then it gets slow.... get windows 7 its fast(even faster than xp :o) its compatible it has the design of vista and you can play games with it :p i got it on my netbook :D

  • on notebooks is better to have win xp

xp is the fastest and the best for notebook

on a new pc you wont see eny diference on xp vs 7(with vista you will go like a crap..)

  • where is win 7??

  • Vista...SLOW

    XP....Fast

Linux...Litle litle bit faster then XP

  • @APK190

even a super computer would run slow with vista...

  • @hackerw32 :D

    Yea I agree!

BC Windows Vista is the badest OS ever...well it looks better then XP but still...7 is better and looking good too...

  • omg xp was so fast i dont rly care about linux coz i dont rly know wot it is and dont want to go 2 it and even vista was fast my comp is intel core 2 duo t5870 2ghz 2gb ram and takes about 2 - 3 mins to boot vista! so slow! although when it started up its rly fast but still...

  • linux el num 1

  • Vista on a laptop is like putting a V10 in a pinto

  • How the heck did you get XP to boot that fast my EeePC 900 will take really long just to boot up, Thats why i used Ubuntu.

  • Windows Vista sucks if you have a low PC. Upgrade your ram on your Vista laptop and do the test again.

  • linuxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • everything about vista sucks. XP ftw.

  • @Chintendoeddman DirectX 10 too?

  • @PS11833 Direct X is a memory hog. Vista requires 1 gigabyte of ram to run. Games take even more with Direct X.

    Vista= looks

    Xp=preformance

  • @Chintendoeddman Ye, but Vista is better than when its got released. I got a PC and a Notebook, both Vista, and i can run anything without problems and everything is just fine. I dont care if it loads up long.

  • @PS11833 yeah but it has alot of compatibility issues. The Windows Updates don't always work correctly and it takes a while to boot up and boot down ( bad thing for a student). I like Xp and Linux alot better

  • @Chintendoeddman Yes it has, but i always found a way arount this issues :P

  • @Chintendoeddman Looks applies for XP too. It has soo many cool themes.

  • @Dani24Revay yup. I have the Ubuntu Human theme and Microsoft Zune theme.

  • What version of linux did you use?

  • Vista is dreadful, no wonder I bought a MacBook!

  • @RussWWFC ha you bought a mac book it is even worse you should have got a pc and istalled xp or windows 7 or vista is even better then mac

  • vistas shut down time is pathetic, reminds me of September, i used to take my laptop to school (its a turion x2 at 2.1 with 2.8 gb of ram, so its not bad) but the bell would go and it would take me sooo long to get out of class, i swear my friends hated me till i upgraded to 7

  • what linux you install in this computer ???

  • and by the way.. Imo a computer havn't started up, before its ready to use, and as everybody who has ever used a windows computer knows that it always has to load some a whole bunch of cr*p..

  • well, if you all agree that the xp has started up before the startup sound your some dumb f*cks..

And, how can you say xp, vista and linux.. Linux is like saying windows just even more wide... say the f*cking name of the distro!!

  • linux es mejor que windows

  • wow so thats why i still see xp on the small laptops at bastbuy and vista does fail

  • thanks .merci la preuve en image que vista est lourd

  • 43 seconds to turn off... OMG :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDd

  • @earthling10 that was on the Acer, the EEEPC has Linux Xandros.

  • VISTA SUCKS D:

  • Lol Vista is so shite

  • Vista lost, the harddrive isn't built for vista it was built for XP, however in looks i think Vista wins

  • Great demonstration! It's really helpfull for me, becouse i'm going do buy this netbook. Thanks!

  • What distro/DE are we using on the linux book? I bet we could shave some more time off that things boot.

"The performance difference is negligible when you consider the superior device support XP has over Linux."

I've said that alot, I just switched the terms "device support" and "performance".

  • u cnt balme vista for being slow, u ned at least 2 gbs to run it because its dat gd

  • is that supposed to be English ?

  • Hi there, you sould buy one more and install mac os on it, and test all 4 together, you may need one more person to help with the test though. nice video ; )

  • or maybe vista vs windows 7

  • I don't like 7 or vista, xp all the way, well tell windows 8 and 128 bit cpu's come out....

would like to see how 7 does though.

  • @whatatidymess

windows 7 is awsome lol. and why the fuck would you need a 128 bit os? really dude? why would we need a couple hundred terabytes of ram -.-

  • 7's ok, 128 bit os? more Power and speed, more sophisticated apps that will run faster.

  • @whatatidymess

128 bit dosent mean anything runs faster. just lets your use more memory. like i said before you dont need a few hundred terabytes of ram lol

  • 64bit can use a maximum of 16TERABYTES of ram, no civilian has that much ram in one machine

  • Why do microsoft want to make windows 8 128bit then?

  • ask them not me

  • Knowing the eee pc im about to get has 4gb sdd memory can i download itunes and my music and have it work or do i have to use an external memory source

  • KolibriOS more faster :) 5 sec boot.

  • Why are you turning them on and off so much? Just USE them for a few minutes.

  • i think the reason why vist lost is because he doesnt have enough ram in that one =p

  • my vista load faster than xp

  • my LFS (Linux) is even more faster :-)

  • @er0d1975 linux users and their speed bragging rights...haha...my LFS is faster than your cookie cutter OS...neener neener...LOL..OK OK. SO I am lazy and I use a windows program.... geez shoot me. Note to ladies: Don't date linux users; they will forever rub it in your face when your system crashes. The only redeeming quality is we can rub their shitty graphics in theirs. So HA !

  • i just installed a dual boot Linux Mint 8 and xp on my 1005ha, I love it.

  • To be fair, such a system wouldnt be able to run Vista properly. I struggle to on my now low end PC

I am thinking of getting the 1005PE though and install linux on it(dual boot it at first to get used to it)-thinking of getting Ubuntu, as that is quite a popular one

  • i am gnu linux user and developer ok

and this test is true 100%

cause kernel linux build for you own hardware of pc or notepad

and problem in other os is not only hardware

is GUI is compiled with kernel but in gnu linux no

caus gui may be gnoe or kde or lxde or etc

but i thank you man for this test boot

  • look i am gnu linux user and developer ok

the gnu linux can boot more then any os in this world ok

cause is compatible with most hardware 100%

cause is compile for your own machine so

there is no different between any distributor

slackware or ubuntu or redhat or etc of gnu linux distributor

    ok

here i guess he use ubuntu i am not sure cause splash is not familiar to me

but i want say thank you man for this test boot

  • ah i see. i'll give it a try, thanks for responding on my comment :D

  • hey do you have the official linpus linux from asus? i accedently formatted my partitiion with the linux for windows but i forgot that i didnt have the dvd/cd

  • What version/distro of Linux was tested?

  • wow vista is soooooooooooooooooooooo slow with an asus

  • I wonder what the setup is on each of these (as far as visual effects and programs on startup). The reason I ask if my current system is on win7 / Unbuntu dual boot and I'm using 2 raid SSD drives. They both boot up very very quick but the Win7 is slightly faster by a second or two.

  • 7 seconds is still nowhere near instant.

  • Judging from the videos I've seen of Google's OS we're nowhere near to instant on/off. I believe with Google's OS we're looking at what? Maybe 12 seconds? I don't remember, maybe someone else can chime in.

  • @mahadragon

    7 seconds

  • still nowhere near instant

  • I´ll upload a video of a sub-10 sec XP boot as soon i have time and patience. Easy stuff but people are so hard-headed.... gezzz

  • i have vista and i know its a memory hog but i rly want linux =]

  • Get more hands or friends...

  • What linux kernel is that?

  • little wrong there my 900 is really slow after boot on xp try use controlpanel and surf at the same time then you have to wait like forever!!!!

  • Okay...I'm not sure what this proves...can someone help me out here...sure...I've got Vista, and 'some' of my games don't work - usually THQ or other companies who use starforce (Stalker not working was the kicker) But now they come up with Windows 7 - man, it should be FREE to anyone with a receipt showing that they bought that Vista shite.

  • vista has alot more themes and eye candy so it takes longer on the same power of speed

windows has a kernel tat has a login and shutdown process that safely logs every thing and erases pagefiles with 0's windows could of been the winner linux doesnt do that

  • Windows XP FTW.

If i tweaked that XP, it would boot in ten seconds.

  • You simply can't tweak XP into booting in ten seconds on a Asus EEE pc, not even with the Atom N270 processor! You would need multiple SSD's and a i7 Quad 3.00 Ghz and a very crappy piece of cut down XP edition. And that possibly won't be enough either.

  • Look I already posted a video of a 8.86sec boot! With just an AMD Athlon LE-1640(3.2GHz), 1GB ram, OCZ Vertex 30GB. Under 9sec boot with a regular tweaked XP. If you want to bet im in for any money.

  • I can't seem to find any video's posted with such a claim, but please enlighten me? And anyway, how have you been measuring the boottime? Via Microsoft own Bootvis or just your own intuition? OCZ Vertex 30 GB is one fast drive but please show me the video then.

  • 8 second boot time with XP is definitely possible, I do it all the time. When the computer is in hibernation mode or standby mode, it's much faster to boot than from a completely cold boot.

  • Looks like Linux is the clear winner here.

  • Vista sucks.

  • vista only sucks because he diidnt have that much ram and didnt have that of a good processor a vista pc is only good with a 3GB ram or more. but i dont like vista :D not capable with most games :( i still like my old pc games :D so i want to stick with xp for a little longer time and my xp shuts down in 4 sec since the time pressing the turn off thing for windows xp.

  • lol yeah judge an entire operating system on how it boots up and shuts down, very clever and smart

  • @BorkGonsam

If it is not a server who runs 24/7 but a notebook that you boot and shut down quite often I would say: Time is money and definitey a criterion.

  • i don't see any judgment just a test of booting

  • That was a reply to another persons comment, youtube is too stupid to put replies under comments now, since google fucked youtube over

  • y cual de los SO te gusta mas?

  • LINUX WIIIINS!

  • i agree, except the xandros was pretty crappy, i put ubuntu on instead. fedora works good too

  • Thanks for posting this video!

I was looking at netbooks I only want one to type in a word processor and to surf the net. So a laggy OS is the last thing a little netbook needs. Nice to know XP is close in speed, its just all the annoying pop-ups and windows alerts and viruses that drive me crazy. For a low-powered netbook, Linux should work great. Kinda sad though that with Wine, Linux can probably play just as many windows XP games as Vista can.

  • I do not think Vista takes so long to close everything.

I feel like there is no reason to compare Windows to Linux.

the issue is that for many people it cost to use Linux is difficult to configure and do a lot more than windows it is more convenient ..

Linux is very good greetings not compare with Windows

  • i would disagree I have used all sorts of windows and I have only used ubuntu9.10 and my understanding of your situation is that its to difficult to do something as configuring and there are many of different way to configure and there as simple as looking on goggle and typing what you need then copy and paste into the terminal witch is basically a more complex version of CMD off of any version of windows and millions of people will help you with anything else you need.

  • no Vista dont let me down!

  • hey man can u help me pleaaze....

i've just install Vista home premium on my

ASUS Eee pc 904HD and i can't get it 2 connect 2 the internet ir even find a network and i downloaded the wireless driver but there's alot of problems.... can u help me :(

  • press fn+f2 (i think) to turn on the wireless card

  • yeah fn+f2 is for switching the wireless 2 on.....

but i think i need the Eee pc 904HD wireless driver.....

and i have searched everywhere :(

  • Mind telling me how to install Xp on one, Mine came with linux

  • if u want windows xp professional or windows xp home edition tell me message me pm me

  • Why is he an idiot for turning on tree computers.

  • i was talking to stseiyag

  • Vista is pretty slow... i could make this with my ASUS EEE Pc witch dual boots Mac OS X and Windows XP...

  • po el vista no veas lo rapido q se carga

  • any day now vista. man i made a mistake getting that on my netbook. oh well don't have the money for XP now, i'll have to wait for 7.

  • XP64bit is from 2004 or 2005

  • hi, do you know if the 1000he comes with linux

  • lol when the vista shuts down he walks away and comes back

  • Windows 7 will probably suck as bad as vista... xp isn't that "great" either. And the price is like 160 euro pro xp 64... is insane price. And you wonder why all internet providers with many servers run linux. It's not only free it's better.

  • my linux crashes all the time

it even crashes when i browse youtube

  • which distro?

  • go xp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • linux is best

  • =D I love linux, I run Ubuntu on my pc, i've always loved how fast it shuts down, but i don't like the boot, i mean is fast.. but i miss the old days when i was able to brew some coffe while XP was booting.

  • linux and XP are best :] vista is shitt I wanna get an eee pc but i dunno wich one is best for gameing :l they dont have the cd drive ayy :( helpp

  • My Aunt would've give me the Linux instead of this XP.. what's better? linux or xp?

  • very nice video...

  • so xp starts quicker and linux shuts down quicker???

  • No buddy, actually Linux starts 4 seconds faster and shuts down even faster, especially 'cause it never updates at shutting down

  • Just getting to the desktop doesn't mean the machine is booted and usable! XP in particular, usually takes another minute to be responsive. It cheats.

  • Go VISTA! =))

  • lol

like a tortoise pulling a tractor hahaha

  • Linux速いな

  • Woah, nice one by Linux! Never used it before though, :P

I hope that it was a fair test, meaning that they all had the same amount of used space, specs, ETC...

  • All systems used identical hardware

  • wow you dont really start at the same time wtf

  • Unfair test. first of, to make it fair, you need to make each computer with the maxium amount of ram each operating system can recognize so each is performing at maximum efficentcy (2.8GB for vista, 1.9GB for XP, not sure Linux) well, that would pretty much even the odds, im pretty sure thos thing only have 1.5GB of ram, maby 2, not sure.

  • Are you fucking serious? The point of this test was to show the boot times of different os'es on the SAME computer...

And the OS doesn't recognize a certain amount of memory, it's that 32 bit processors limit the amount usable.

  • Oh, Really? i didnt realize, the point im trying to bring across is that you cant put vista on a PC not nearly capable of handling it, and then bash vista for being slow, like many commenters are here. and, although windows XP can recognize 3.7GB ram for example, But it can only utilize 1.9 - 2GBs of ram

  • xp isnt 1.9GB max ram its 3GB Max and vista i dont no :D

  • i have 2GB in mine, but XP HOME SP3 only sees 1.75. so maybe your wrong?

  • nope on tigerdirect it tells how many rams u can have u can have max 4GB on windows professional and xp home 32 bit but on the starter version u can only have 512 and 128 GB on Professional 64Bit

  • on vista 32 bit 4GB and on starter 32 bit 1GB

  • True... The XP thing isn't fully booted. He hits the stop watch before it even makes it's startup sound. As someone who is forced to use XP for work, I know you can't do shit for about another 90-180 seconds because it is still loading the OS.

  • Only if you have a lot of stuff set to start at startup, it should NOT take that long before you can use it, I use xp on my netbook, and after the startup sound it only takes like 2 or 3 seconds for the wifi to come on and for everything to be usable.

  • You are using "Sleep" mode. Try actually turning it off.

  • kidding 44 sec... omg!!!

  • two things:

u have 2 admit that vista is running well on the eeepc

and wld vista destroy it, like make it over heat.

also would it run on mine:

    1.6ghz atom processor

    1gb ram

  • TRUE VISTA IS SLOW

  • These Xp Vs Linux boot tests aren`t Valid.

1)After the desktop screen shows up Windows is still booting many background tasks.

    2) Unless you keep XP off the net, you need decent non-M$ Anti-Virus, Firewall, Ad-ware & Pop-up & Script blockers to be safe enough to use.

3)Plus a Boot manger, to control all those pesky hidden installed without permission background programs, that slow everything down.

Now do a boot test & see the time difference!

These points don`t apply to the Linux versions.

  • vista needs a lot of Ram and gigs to run fast

  • Linux is better than windows and it will be 4ever better than windows Windows Sucks Linux Rocks

Debian,Ubuntu,Fedora,Mandriva ect are better than all windows

  • Which is exactly why 4% of computers run it.

    Fanboy.

  • oh common man Free OS No Virus Open Source Free Programs and more more more. You need to pay Windows for have it legal download and run ubuntu 100% Legaly FULL SUPPORT :D

    Linux #1

  • who cares how many computers run it. Linux dominates windows. a linux PC will last longer than a windows pc.

  • how do you figure?

  • common sence.

linux has far less threats than windows.

    as in viruses,malware ect.

linux is overall a better OS.
