@justme5ppl Ok well you just got him wow almost the same time i got my cockatiel. Anyways don't make any loud sounds, talk to him and whistle thats what most birds like. Make sure you dont stick your finger in til he calms down and it will take it a few days or so for him to get used to you and his new home.
@justme5ppl Be patient and calm with your bird. First let it become comfortable with you around the cage by just sitting by it and talking to it , then get it to be used to your hand in the cage by just putting your hand in and letting it sit there. And eventually move on to feeding it treats from hand and stepping up . They take time and patience. & dont ever get mad at it and scream or hit/smack it . Dont let any cat or others animals around it that could hurt your bird either .

@itZRaDaRR Hey, if it is a hand-reared bird, then no doubt he's just scared because he isn't used to you. When I got one of my two Cockatiels, she was scared to death, we could hold her for a few seconds but then she'd fly off into walls and cupboards and windows. Basically you just have to keep trying and being calm until your new tiel gets used to you. It's probably a bit scared at the moment because you're a new person and it's in a new place. Give it time to get used to you :)

@pornofa You could probably just go slow with him because it can take a long time to acclimate to an environment. He probably views you as a predator if you come storming over and try to forcefully take him from his cage. Move some of his food or treats up to the top of the cage and open the door, if his wings are trimmed or clipped. Go slow. If you approach the cage, don't rush over. Walk slowly. Stuff like that. There are a lot of videos you can also look up. Help books help too.

@krest4312 When he is out, time him between poops. Once you get the timing down,you can put him back in the cage when it's "poop time". Once he poops, he can come back out again until it's time for the next poop. Eventually he may get the idea that he can only poop in his cage and he may start going in the cage to poop on his own. good luck.
@krest4312 A lot of it that you need to learn their timing. Often times, there'll be physical clues around the time they need to go. For my cockatiels, they'll fluff up in a certain way. For my macaw, if I'm holding him, he'll all of a sudden get very fidgety and will want to get away so that's my cue to get him to his cage or a garbage can. Some people have taught their birds to verbally tell them, but it all starts with you.

@gypsywomancanada1702 You can teach budgies. I had a friend who used to have a budgie that would say, "Pretty Bird." She was really smart. It's amazing smart such a small animal can be. But they are not as easy to teach as large parrots. I owned a budgie and never was able to teach it anything but I also didn't have alot of patience for it. Good luck!

gytarok - cockatiels can and do talk ;) . Most people don't teach them how though so most birds only mimic. I have a cockatiel who only says 'Shut up!' at night when another bird is making noise. The other bird will stop singing.
As to why he says 'Shut up' (and taught the other birds to say it)- this male likes to sing all the time and we live in an apartment. He only gives kisses when on my shoulder, too.
my dad is thinking about breeding cockatiels,taming them,then selling them do you think you could get more $ out of a bird that has been trained not to bite? if so how mutch?
me and my grandad breed cockatiels you do get more money but its hard each bird is diffrent and each bird takes 3 to 4 weeks in my experience when its a baby so is the extra money worth all the hassel to you

well my cockatiel didnt want to be touched for the first couple weeks but then i started getting her on my hand (wearing a glove because she used to bite) and then after some time she started to follow me wherever i go one important tip though only approach your bird when they want to because if u force them to be with you they wont like you maybe even fear you
when we first got our cockatiel we left it for a week to settle and then my dad picked it up, firstly it was constently biting him but then after a while it will trust you. (it took my dad about a week) now she will let ANYONE pick her up and she make loads of sounds but were close to her talking!

My tiel should be 4 months old by now (I do not know the exact date of birth) and still doesn't say ANYTHING, can't even whistle though I play the same tunes everyday when practicing with the flute :( should I definitively suppose it's a female?

gytarok - cockatiels can and do talk ;) . Most people don't teach them how though so most birds only mimic. I have a cockatiel who only says 'Shut up!' at night when another bird is making noise. The other bird will stop singing.
As to why he says 'Shut up' (and taught the other birds to say it)- this male likes to sing all the time and we live in an apartment. He only gives kisses when on my shoulder, too.

me and my grandad breed cockatiels you do get more money but its hard each bird is diffrent and each bird takes 3 to 4 weeks in my experience when its a baby so is the extra money worth all the hassel to you

I have four, and Sparta talked when I had two other birds, and he was almost a year. They WILL talk, you just need a lot of one-on-one time, and maybe a separate cage.

i'v had my cockatiel for less than a week and just by bonding with her she has never bit me and never gets aggressive. I really want to teach her to talk as well. When she whistles it sounds like and imitation but not the actual word.

my pet bird only likes to go outside her cage when she has her little friend next to her.and my other bird gets on my hand and lets you touch his head.he likes to get out side . when i put my hand on his feet he gets on.

well my cockatiel didnt want to be touched for the first couple weeks but then i started getting her on my hand (wearing a glove because she used to bite) and then after some time she started to follow me wherever i go one important tip though only approach your bird when they want to because if u force them to be with you they wont like you maybe even fear you

when we first got our cockatiel we left it for a week to settle and then my dad picked it up, firstly it was constently biting him but then after a while it will trust you. (it took my dad about a week) now she will let ANYONE pick her up and she make loads of sounds but were close to her talking!
