This cartoon is a caricature of what really happened! Galileo's discovery did not scare the Church! There were Jesuit astronomers who also made similar discoveries at the time. The Roman Catholic Church has never been anti-science!
@ARP7777777 My friend, the Catholic Church neither saw the Copernican model of the universe as a threat nor as a heresy. They saw it as a possible explanation about the solar system and planetary movements. Galileo never presented an open & shut case that favored the Copernican model over the Aristotilean/Ptolemic model. Even the great Tycho Brahe wasn't convinced by Galileo.
@yahooveritas I am not trying to say that the Catholic Church was always wrong, just that its supression of person after person, and group after group, meant that when rebellion came, it was overwhelming.
It's sad to see the idiocy of the people here.. The pope was is and god himself doesn't tell the truth, at least the one you claim speaks in the bible, and certainly so does living and doing whats right in his sight would be wrong.
Like Chapman Cohen said: "Gods are fragile things, they maybe killed with a whiff of science or a dose of common sense!"
@b00017898 ya, but the problem is with most people is accepting whats the truth and when an old idea before the truth has been around for a long time its hard for them to think of the truth
The vatican believed that the earth was the center of the universe until 1992

@yahooveritas Yes. . . and no. When it suited their purpose, like Aristotle, they were accepting. When it threated a medieval view of the world?

The pope is never wrong! He tells the words of God himself! ;-)

This is kind of like the BCS that permeates college football. Archaic, non-sensical traditions suck.

living the truth doesn't mean siting around like a couch potato and point out things that are wrong,
it is living and doing what is right in the Lord's sight!
