I was outed in my first week at collage, not that I was in the closet. In our classes there tends to be a lot of joking and talking and I made a comment about how annoying it is when guys don't take no for an answer at bars. Appearing I sounded a little bitter so the guy sitting next to me asked. So I told him, but I live in Toronto Canada, if your homophobic up here you will be ridiculed by everyone constantly and expect lots of gay porn on your desktop if you forget to log out of your computer
In the U.S. a college usually exists within a university. For example, my university has a college of business, a college of liberal arts, in addition to many more. Also, some colleges exist on their own. Smith College in Massachusetts is an example of this.
@surgerryy in Germany there are universities and there are colleges. they are both accredited the only difference is that colleges do not award doctoral degrees, but Germany has colleges only for specific subjects and everything else you find in universities.
THANK YOU for pointing out the college is for learning... I hate it when people just ignore everything professors say and act like they don't need to learn anything. Why go to college if you don't think you have anything to learn??
My gvmt professor was talking about how college students grow more and more liberal as they continue their education. I think that has a lot to do with it being easier to come out in college... people are a lot more open-minded. Oh, and I totally TOTALLY agree with the statement "I'm gay, but I'm not gay first." Genius.
thanks for the advice... lol but hot roommate is soooo bad!! my summer was hell because of my camp roommate. SO hot! she looked so stereotypically gay too! but so straight! not fun listening about how cute some dude is at camp... hell. took every bone in my body not to be selfish and jealous. i only cock blocked them once ha.
I really appreciate how well you articulate your personal experiences while making it clear that you can't speak on behalf of everyone. It's something a college environment teaches for sure, that there are so many different people and points of view.
i came out to my roommate on the first day. Actually i was talking about Philly Pride Parade and she just came out and asked me if i was gay and i said yeah. At first she was kinda weary about me but now we are best friends and im out to everyone at school and its great! High school was miserable with coming out and everything but once i started college it was like starting fresh with a clean slate. These videos are great and i cant wait to see more episodes.
my facebook clearly says i'm gay but there are a lot of friends and family members on my facebook who don't know. my flare board is hella gay. my interested in is hella gay.
a friend of mine is leaving for college in 2 weeks, and her roommate is SOOO hot. like shes a beautiful girl. unfortionatly her and her boyfriend make a gorgeous couple. haha.
so question for the beaves. What is youngest age you guys would date somone? Say you met sombody and you were smitten and found out they where a baby beave like arotnd 18 or 19? :)
I have done the same sort of thing in my American Studies class this past school year. We would have debates on gay marriage and after hearing some of the arguments I just got very deep into the debates. I loved that class though, because it gave me a chance to state my opinions and maybe open people eyes up a bit.
My college experience is also unconventional hell so was my high school i went online (ballet dancer) . I cry a little every night about missing prom-jk. I'm going to be transfering my junior year actually maybe to San Diego State not sure though. My motivation being my leather jacket replacing my gigantic winter jacket and frostbite hands.
Random observation do u notice myself included when people post it's about themselves. The saying everyone likes to talk about themselves lives on!
i also had to repeat in my head "I am not gay first" and wonder if it's true for me as well. it's making me think a lot. i really like this vid, it's making me think :)
this was a GREAt video. I loved your college story. It really helped me, because Im going to be a freshman (high school) this fall. But I have the same thing like 'support gay rights' and im still trying to figure myself out as it is. Anyways i loved this video and it really helped!
dont go live! lol it would be awesome if i could be sure to be there but im afraid ill miss like...all of them. but its all up to you of course and once a month is a good compromise i suppose
"I'm not gay first." In my mind, I repeated what you said b/c you reminded me how important that is.
I don't "look the part" but by the end of high school everyone knew I believe sexuality is fluid and it was no big deal.
I think for college, I'm going to play the straight card for a while which isn't a total lie. But I just want to experience "being normal". Plus, I know it's a lot of people's biggest fear to have a LGBTQ roommate so...
I've been back to my university and was amazed that not only do they have a dean for LGBT students now, but there are also drag competitions between schools. Amazing. And sad that it didn't exist 40 years ago.
I seriously love you jess, the way you think, how opinionated you are, ways wanting to defend the LGTQ community and learning to keep an open mind to others is exactly many of my same traits it's like looking into the mirror...
... except I'm a boy and you like girls.
OH! and who is that painting by behind you? or where did you get it? I saw it 2-3 years ago and almost bought it, but didn't and I've regretting ever since. =/
I think you should just do a prerecorded video, or at least take the live video and put it on youtube afterwards because you are never going to find the perfect time for all 8,000 of your subscribers and I think it would be best to at least do all your normal videos and maybe do the live ones on the weekends when more people are likely to see it.
I really don't want to miss out on my favourite beaver once a month!!
I agree. Also, for the European beavers who have a 9 hour time difference with Jess, the chance that they will be able to see the blog-tv thing live is very small.
oh... maybe thats how my whole school knows about my sexuality. maybe, i just talk about gay politics too much or i made it clear that my sisters are. hehe i dont deny it when asked. i feel bad now. i blamed a friend who i had told. i thought she told everyone.
this week's topic hits home more than any of the others, and i believe that your advice about setting yourself aside more was perfect. While I believe that voicing your personal beliefs is very important, its just as important to listen to the voices around you.
thanks a lot for your advice! i'm entering second year, and i wish i came out during first year but i just don't think i was ready to. i don't know if it was/has been a good thing to wait, but only time will tell!
Sometimes i feel like i should bring up im gay withing the first few days i meet someone. I feel like if i'm going to take the time to get to know this person as a possible good friend i dont' want him/her to just bail midway because i told them i'm gay 6 months later. It happens, well to me i guess, and yes it does suck.
in college i spoke up sometimes. but we had a homophobic teacher who brought the gay bashing every lesson, so eventually the gay kids in his class came to collect the books on the first day of term and studied amongst ourselves without his help. so we were taken off the course, you had to have 50% attendance which was 2 hr a week, so we would do those but just blank it out. my gf once was sat but wasn't visible, and the teacher started gay bashing on her without realising she was in the room
blogtv last week was fun. it's great for spontaneity, real-time chatting, tends to go on longer than video. sucks if you can't watch at scheduled time tho or forgot or didn't know. once a month sounds good & recording parts of it - I think it'd be nice for those who miss it live to still have opportunity to hear your helpful advice/insight.
thanks for your mondays, jess.
PS. if you still feel like sharing, would love to see the video you mentioned taking of MaryB guitar-ing singing?
The "I'm gay a lot" quote just might be my favorite beaver bunch moment ever. I don't know if you intended it to be so funny, but either way, it was golden.
i agree, i was kinda forced to cme out on high school cause i had a boyfriend and everyone talked, so the truth came out thanks to gossip and rumors and for a while, my life was hellish, but in college people were new and knew i was gay from the start and were very accepting and loving.

I'm beginning to realize that the only ppl that I will tell are those that I know will be there for me & that I can truly trust.
I'm actually really happy that this is this week's topic. I'm heading off for my freshman year of college this fall, so these are really pertinent issues for me. Also, would just like to put out there this funky little rooming dynamic: One of my roommates is straight, the other is an out lesbian, and I'm securely tucked away in my closet. We've got a little bit of everything, apparently. ;-)
I'm in high school and I was going through this sort of thing at the beginning of the year. So now, basically all my friends know I'm gay ... except for this one guy who I'm not that close with who STILL hasn't a clue ... and these other two girls that are extremely homophobic but are like my party buddies ... so that's complicated. Don't know whether or not to tell them. I have a feeling that although they talk the talk they wouldn't actually care if I was gay or not... Thanks Jess! Great vid!

Im going into my 2nd year of college as a gay-bo and I love it xD <3 Good luck and I hope you enjoy your first year
yeah that is true, i guess i do find myself more comfortable around ppl i dont know as well (when it comes to being gay). i'm looking forward to college but still nervous, i guess that normal though! thanks for the reply and advice!
i remember when i came out to my friends my freshman year of college. we had been friends for most of the year and it was toward the end of our first.
well a girl that was an acquaintance of ours and she said something negative about some lesbian couple that she saw. i get pissed and yelled, "well i'm gay!" to the girl and walked away. my friends were shocked but didn't care. i never talked about guys. i was pissed at the time, but now, i think it's hilarious.
Jess your videos always make me smile. and I agree with you. I'm not gay first. I'm definitely a proud lesbian but it's not like I introduce myself saying "Hi I'm Sasha. I'm gay."
