@CallumJStewart hmm I used to hate vibrato when I was younger. I kinda got used to it with time, now I can appreciate it. But calling them "sheep voices" is offensive, besides it's their style. You call sheep voices like Miley Cyrus and Rihanna.
michael ball always seem to sound fantastic live. put him in a studio to record.. :(
would love for a production to have michael ball (in his prime) as raoul, john owen jones as the definitive phantom, and gina beck as christine.........what a show that would be.
@jgalt7 hey i noticed that too!! i got Les Miserables 10th Anniversary where he plays Marius and simply fell in love with his voice. then i went like crazy for his albums and stuff and got shocked. he's a very good singer but something is missing when I hear his studio tracks...
Michael Ball is one of the best in All I Ask of You. I would like to see Hayley Westenra play Christine; she fits the part with the ingenue good looks and the terrific soprano voice. She would have been great for the POTO movie.
When I was new to this whole opera/broadway musicals, I always frowned and turned away from the plain, 'old', singers. But now that I've grown into the industry, I can't do anything but fall in love. It's not the physical aspects that matter here, it's the beauty and strength of an actress/singers voice. Just a simple realization.
Michael Ball will always be the definitive Raoul ... I've haven't seen anyone else coming close. Except mebbe Lee Mead, who's my 2nd fav Raoul of all time :)
in the POTO movie, i felt like patrick wilson did a terrific job. emmy = MEH. gerard butler = we'll he's good-looking but he didn't capture the essence of the phantom
Emmy Rossum was woefully mis-cast in the film. She didn't have the voice for the role. But then, the film was made for teenagers who like horror films and not fans of the show - hence the terrible casting all round.
I saw a program about these Royal Variety Shows and Michael Ball said that the only thing they were thinking about when they did this performance, was to stay upright. The floor was extremely polished and during the rehearsals they were sliding all over it and falling to the ground. I think he called it the scariest moment ever at a Royal Variety Show(he has been in 5)
This says it's a tribute, does that mean this isn't from the actual show? Obviously I know the song is but I've never seen it live so I was just wondering because there's not any props or anything on the stage.
@demigodcabin6 This is from The Royal Variety Performance in 1991. It's part of an about 30-minute long tribute to Cameron Mackintosh. It included songs from "Song and Dance", "The Card", "Five Guys Named Moe", "Follies", "My Fair Lady", "Oliver!", "Miss Saigon", "Cats", "Phantom of the Opera" and "Les Misérables".
@nktu23 michael have recorded Music of the Night(and the title song as well) and has sung it in concert.
I would love to see him play the Phantom one day, but I guess he has enough on his plate at the moment with Sweeney Todd opening in less than a month. :)
I can't stand purists who refuse to acknowledge the greatness of something just because it didn't come first. I vastly prefer Emmy's style in the role of Christine, with much less vibrato and less overpowering. There's an innocence to her voice that Moore just doesn't have. She's more like Contessa. Michael Ball, on the other hand, nailed it. Just nailed it.
Emmy was too wooden and had no charisma,Claire Moore was a great favourite in London and many people i spoke to,who had seen both, said they preferred Claire to Sarah Brightman. Then again Sarah was married to the composer so it was fait accomplis.
@vpierrus878 so true emmy rossum sings as if she is there and is alone with patrick wilson and they are totally in love where claire sounds like she is acting which she obviously is so im with you EMMY ROCKS!!!

you're silly :D very silly! honestly, even though its an opinion its....silly. no offense. christine is suppossed to be a classically trained singer with a strong beautiful voice. its suposed to be clear and supported and very sweet, as described in the book, and her voice is IT. (sorry i get quite a bit defensive when it comes to claire)
I'm not saying I don't like her or that she can't sing, because she definitly can, but for me, personally, the Christine from the movie is the ultimate Christine
They're different classes of singers who sing very different types of music in different ways. I love both versions, and can't compare them in my mind. Emmy Rossum is spectacular with her performance, and Claire Moore is flawless. Micheal Ball, however, MAKES this song. =D *micheal ball fangirl*
<3 Michael Ball! Is he the original Raoul cause I have the original cast, obviously Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, but it wouldnt tell me who raoul was. Am I right?
They did that in the original production on purpose. Claire was Sarah Brightman's alternate, so they wanted to match up their looks as much as possible.
He wasn't marius in the production David Byrant was the original Broadway Marius. Michael is the origincal London, Complete Symphonic and 10th annviersary Marius
Not bad at all. Just listened to Michael Crawford and Barbara Bonneys version and that is probably the best version I've heard so far but this isn't bad. Like both Michaels and Claire Moore is growing on me.
