It is not a symbol of fear or weakness. In Han dynansty when chinese empire was strong, a wall was built to protect and the trade route. In ming dynasty strongholds along the wall was built, and mongol nomads were forced to trade instead of loot. Therefore the wall actually promoted communincation and peace.

Many chinese youngsters like to compare greatwall with berlin wall as well, that make me very sad, one entire race lost the respect to ancestors.

Hi since I am one chinese and also a greatwall lover, would like to clarify a few points here :)

the greatwall was meant to defend against nomadic riders from the north of china, its main purpose is to prevent ramdon looting on chinese farmers and pre-empt large scale invasion. So far in most times of history it served the function very well.

But the most important issue is regarding the usefulness of the wall. Do realize that the Great Wall took 2 centuries to built. Mongol invaders had no trouble breaching the wall by going around it (unfinished wall here...there...EVERYWHERE for that matter) until its finished 2 centuries later ;)

Chinese cities were all walled, and they knew so well a wall would not stop a well armed invading army.
