Imagine my horror when I bought A Sesame Street Christmas on CD mostly to hear this song and "Keep Christmas With You", only to be subjected to Elmo singing "and if that isn't a true blue miracle, Elmo don't know what one is". I wanted to hear the versions I first heard back in 1978. This movie has so many fond memories for me, and I'm glad I can now watch this with my 5 year old. Thank goodness I've been able to rip the YouTube videos to create my own mp3s of the way the songs were meant to be!
this has (and still is even tho i'm 23) a christmas eve tradition... after dinner, my sister and i get in our pjs and watch christmas eve on sesame street. <3
*tears* This gets me all sentimental. This is the Sesame Street I grew up with, and seeing Mr. Hooper and Olivia makes me sad because I miss them so. I used to LOVE this Christmas special. This is how Sesame Street should be. I loved when Bob and Linda and Susan and Gordon and Maria and Olivia and Mr. Hooper were all there. :)
NO, and I mean NO modern kids educational or otherwise show can make a Christmas special like Sesame Street in the 80s did. Sesame Street, and Muppet Christmases are the absolute gold standard for Christmas Specials a few other shows did good ones too. Heaven help us if they ever, ever make a Hannah Montana or a Miley Cyrus, or Dora the Explorer Christmas, even though they probably have. This just makes me feel good listening to this. It makes me sentimental, because this was a big part of
@redmr2na Because most kids shows these days are patronizing and over-the-top. Even sesame street has evolved in that direction. It sounds cliche, but kids shows were more "sophisticated" 20-30 years ago.
Every year on Thanksgiving we ring in the Christmas season by watching "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street." We've done it since the early 80's and now my kids and my cousins' kids carry on the tradition when we get together. Love this stuff!
The reason we 70s and 80s children turned out the way we did, was because we HAD Sesame Street. We learned because Sesame Street made learning fun. Kids these days need Sesame Street. Kids these days are turnining out wrong because they DON'T have Sesame Street.
im 17, and i own the this video. i even found that i had sheet music with the lyrics to this song in one of my christmas boxes. this song is so damn catchy xD. anyway, im in chorus in my HS, and im hoping to maybe get my choir teacher to let us sing this for our christmas concert cuz it's just such a christmas-y song :)
@Diamond16xoxo When I was middle school, I convinced the chorus teacher to let me sing "Keep Christmas With You" with the sign language during the Christmas concert. As my mother says, "It never hurts to ask"
I'm 35, and we sang this song in my 4th grade choir back in the day! I guess I had missed the special though, cuz I had no clue that out was a sesame street song. It always made me wanda cry though - that should have been my clue right there, lol. :)
@jvfunn3000 David and Maria were the hot item back in 70's. I remember when Luis and Maria got married I was a little older and wondered what the deal was with the big breakup
I remember Christmas Eve on Sesame Street from when I was a kid (though I was born in 1982), it brought back so many memories for me watching it on DVD, I loved it.
I'm 35 and can't make it through the holidays without this. Know the movie almost word for word. "Have Yourself A Merry Christmas" makes me tear up because of this show.
@vampireheart85 I was 1986 and I just discovered that this movie is available on DVD. Fastest $8 I ever spent. I watched this special every year when I was growing up on the VHS my dad taped from PBS. Great memories.
@xzero319 LOL you said it, they must be grouches because this is a great Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. Thank goodness there are more of us than them.
My mom ordered the DVD just a few days ago. When I go up to her house next week I'm gonna watch it. Trying to talk her into ordering me a copy. I'm 21, don't care what anybody thinks, but I love this movie!
I remember watching this on TV on Christmas Eve at my uncle's home. Those were the days. It brings back memories of Christmases past, still alive in my heart.
This was my favorite Christmas Special and I still watch it every year (usually on Christmas Eve). There's just something magical about it. The ending when Big Bird entered Gordon's apartment and saw all the presents lying next to the beautifully-decorated tree reminds me of when I was little and came downstairs on Christmas morning, believing that Santa had come and left wonderful presents for us.
Come one SESAME STREET Re Release the old stuff on CD without the Elmo dob overs... The older members may not be around anymore, BUT they are a part of the HISTORY of Sesame Street... RIP to all who died... I will never forget them EVER.... Seeing voices removed from recordings saddens me....
This was my favorite when I was growing up it still is. I watch it every year on Christmas Eve. I love it, it makes you realize the true meaning of Christmas. It's amazing that last year was it's 30th anniversary.
hey everybody i know this is thh third time I've said it BUT PLEASE CALL THE RADIO STATION IN YOUR AREA AND REQUEST THIS SONG I WANT IT TO BECOME A CLASSIC LIKE MANY OTHERS PLEASE!!!!!
I called the radio station this morning requesting this song unfortunately if they played it I must have missed it cuz I started work about 10 minutes after I requested it.
@hairsprayman111 I've never heard any version but this one. I love pre-Elmo Sesame Street more than anything. It doesn't seem so... crazy? I think that's the right word, there might be a better one though.
@SophiaPatience Well when Sesame Street released a Christmas album in the mid 90's, this song was on it, and the vocals were done by hoots the owl and elmo for the most part. bob too
@hairsprayman111 I dunno… It's nice to have the CD version, but I take exception to Sesame's "let's-just-replace-all-our-dead-cast-members-with-Kevin-Clash" attitude towards this song. It's a shame that we still can't get the original recording, with the original vocalists, in glorious digital Hi-Fi stereo.
the BEST Christmas special ever made. I still watch it every year, and I've grown old(er...) No disrespect to Elmo, but I am glad this xmas movie focuses on BB. I know elmo wasnt around here, but still, that is why i watch this every year

Absolutely beautiful. I wish they played this every christmas instead of the stupid elmo ones. I loved this Chrisitmas special when I was a kid and still do.
I wish they would play this song on the radio during Christmas time. Some would argue that its for kids but then again so is Frosty the snowman, Rudolph, The Chipmunks, and the muppetts and I have heard all of those on the radio so there's no reason in my book why they shouldn't air this on the radio during christmas time
