  • Why was the Count written out of the story after the ice rink? He would have been perfect for a 12 days of Christmas countdown

  • Four people who watched this are grouchkateers.

  • Imagine my horror when I bought A Sesame Street Christmas on CD mostly to hear this song and "Keep Christmas With You", only to be subjected to Elmo singing "and if that isn't a true blue miracle, Elmo don't know what one is". I wanted to hear the versions I first heard back in 1978. This movie has so many fond memories for me, and I'm glad I can now watch this with my 5 year old. Thank goodness I've been able to rip the YouTube videos to create my own mp3s of the way the songs were meant to be!

  • this has (and still is even tho i'm 23) a christmas eve tradition... after dinner, my sister and i get in our pjs and watch christmas eve on sesame street. <3

  • *tears* This gets me all sentimental. This is the Sesame Street I grew up with, and seeing Mr. Hooper and Olivia makes me sad because I miss them so. I used to LOVE this Christmas special. This is how Sesame Street should be. I loved when Bob and Linda and Susan and Gordon and Maria and Olivia and Mr. Hooper were all there. :)

  • My Childhood, the likes of which we will never see again. Live forever in the hearts of the many who grew up with this. Long Live Sesame Street.

  • NO, and I mean NO modern kids educational or otherwise show can make a Christmas special like Sesame Street in the 80s did. Sesame Street, and Muppet Christmases are the absolute gold standard for Christmas Specials a few other shows did good ones too. Heaven help us if they ever, ever make a Hannah Montana or a Miley Cyrus, or Dora the Explorer Christmas, even though they probably have. This just makes me feel good listening to this. It makes me sentimental, because this was a big part of

  • @redmr2na Because most kids shows these days are patronizing and over-the-top. Even sesame street has evolved in that direction. It sounds cliche, but kids shows were more "sophisticated" 20-30 years ago.

  • Every year on Thanksgiving we ring in the Christmas season by watching "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street." We've done it since the early 80's and now my kids and my cousins' kids carry on the tradition when we get together. Love this stuff!

  • The reason we 70s and 80s children turned out the way we did, was because we HAD Sesame Street. We learned because Sesame Street made learning fun. Kids these days need Sesame Street. Kids these days are turnining out wrong because they DON'T have Sesame Street.

  • Does this song have Chet O'Brien or Mortimer O'Brien? @ 0:47.

What is the relationship between the two?

  • im 17, and i own the this video. i even found that i had sheet music with the lyrics to this song in one of my christmas boxes. this song is so damn catchy xD. anyway, im in chorus in my HS, and im hoping to maybe get my choir teacher to let us sing this for our christmas concert cuz it's just such a christmas-y song :)

  • @Diamond16xoxo When I was middle school, I convinced the chorus teacher to let me sing "Keep Christmas With You" with the sign language during the Christmas concert. As my mother says, "It never hurts to ask"

  • @vampirealdys that's so cool :D. i think im gonna ask! ur mother gives good advice lol X3

  • I didn't know Olivia an David were in heaven

  • Sorry about the typos... Using the swype feature on my celly lol...

  • I'm 35, and we sang this song in my 4th grade choir back in the day! I guess I had missed the special though, cuz I had no clue that out was a sesame street song. It always made me wanda cry though - that should have been my clue right there, lol. :)

  • Bob is the man.

  • It would be nice if somebody has Christmas Eve on Sesame Street Record to upload this song.

  • Ah sesame street before it turned into elmo's world...good stuff haha. This movie is great, a Christmas classic!! :)

  • How can Hoots and Elmo sing together? They're both Kevin Clash!

  • @JGCooney Same way Rowlf and Kermit sang together in "The Muppet Movie". It's Muppet magic at work!

  • At 1:49 Luis would be beating David up.

  • @jvfunn3000 David and Maria were the hot item back in 70's. I remember when Luis and Maria got married I was a little older and wondered what the deal was with the big breakup

  • R.I.P. Mr. Hooper. David, and Olivia. We'll miss you.

  • I remember Christmas Eve on Sesame Street from when I was a kid (though I was born in 1982), it brought back so many memories for me watching it on DVD, I loved it.

  • I'm 35 and can't make it through the holidays without this. Know the movie almost word for word. "Have Yourself A Merry Christmas" makes me tear up because of this show.

  • This song has said Christmas for me for a long, long time. It's so beautiful and cozy and heartwarming, all those Christmasy adjectives.

  • This is classic. I'm in my 30s and I still watch this every year. Elmo destroyed Sesame Street.

  • @kramer2120 FACT!

  • @kramer2120 Hear you on that; as well as puppeteers passing on.. characters dying out

  • This is still my favorite Christmas special ever. I watch it every year...and I'm 36.

  • This brought me back memories, as a child!

  • You can buy the DVD Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. It has Mr. Hooper in it and is one of my all time favorites.

  • I agree. I love the song with the muppets, but this one is so beautiful. I have always loved this version.

  • if it's on dvd where can I get it?

  • I was born in 85 but I have watched this almost every year

  • @vampireheart85 I was 1986 and I just discovered that this movie is available on DVD. Fastest $8 I ever spent. I watched this special every year when I was growing up on the VHS my dad taped from PBS. Great memories.

  • @xzero319 LOL you said it, they must be grouches because this is a great Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. Thank goodness there are more of us than them.

  • 3 Grouches dislike this video.

  • Aw! Olivia, David, Mr. Hooper, and Linda! Sesame Street just hasn't been the same w/o them. I love this video, and I love this song.

  • My mom ordered the DVD just a few days ago. When I go up to her house next week I'm gonna watch it. Trying to talk her into ordering me a copy. I'm 21, don't care what anybody thinks, but I love this movie!

  • @SophiaPatience I just got a copy! It's my prize possesion now! lol

  • @SophiaPatience I still got a VHS of it, had it since I was a baby. 24 now, and STILL enjoy it every year. Is a personal tradition ^_^

  • @DeadMoon1986 Heh, I watched the snot out of my VHS version as a kid. I'd watch it even if it WASN'T Christmas.

  • I remember watching this on TV on Christmas Eve at my uncle's home. Those were the days. It brings back memories of Christmases past, still alive in my heart.

  • I don't know why but I love the part where David is going on about how his earmuffs are so warm! lol

  • I believe in miracles, and I can tell you why: Sesame Street.

  • This was my favorite Christmas Special and I still watch it every year (usually on Christmas Eve). There's just something magical about it. The ending when Big Bird entered Gordon's apartment and saw all the presents lying next to the beautifully-decorated tree reminds me of when I was little and came downstairs on Christmas morning, believing that Santa had come and left wonderful presents for us.

    This show is a classic.

  • this song always makes me feel so content :)

  • @bigmigs94 "Keep Christmas With You" is great, also.

  • Come one SESAME STREET Re Release the old stuff on CD without the Elmo dob overs... The older members may not be around anymore, BUT they are a part of the HISTORY of Sesame Street... RIP to all who died... I will never forget them EVER.... Seeing voices removed from recordings saddens me....

  • A toast to Jon Stone.

  • RIP Alaina Reed-Amini, your voice and spirit and love for children will never ever be forgotten. Sisters get your cancer screenings!

  • Goodbye, Olivia

  • RIP Olivia. We'll miss you.

  • @panic43 And RIP David

  • Man another cast of Sesame Street has passed away Olivia (Alania Reed) RIP. Sesame Street will live on.

  • RIP Alaina Reed (Olivia)

  • This was my favorite when I was growing up it still is. I watch it every year on Christmas Eve. I love it, it makes you realize the true meaning of Christmas. It's amazing that last year was it's 30th anniversary.

  • Comment removed

  • It was also pre-Elmo ;)

  • This was pre-Luis. He came after David left the show.

  • my favorite song for christmas

  • this was my favorite Christmas movie growing up and still is =) i love it!! ♥ and if that isn't a true blue miracle, i don't know what one is!!

  • They should air this on TV again They probobly won't do it on PBS but maybe Sprout could air it

  • @Bigben1984 This airs on my local PBS station a few weeks before Christmas each year (during the pledge drive)...

  • "DING DONG YOUR WRONG" this is the best christmas song out there!

  • This video is on the DVD "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street". I love this song and its one of my favorite Christmas songs from Sesame Street.

  • hey everybody i know this is thh third time I've said it BUT PLEASE CALL THE RADIO STATION IN YOUR AREA AND REQUEST THIS SONG I WANT IT TO BECOME A CLASSIC LIKE MANY OTHERS PLEASE!!!!!

  • I called the radio station this morning requesting this song unfortunately if they played it I must have missed it cuz I started work about 10 minutes after I requested it.

  • BEST XMAS SPECIAL EVER

  • I wish THIS VERSION of True Blue Miracle would be released on CD. I love the one with Hoots and Elmo and stuff, but this one is PERFECT

  • @hairsprayman111 I've never heard any version but this one. I love pre-Elmo Sesame Street more than anything. It doesn't seem so... crazy? I think that's the right word, there might be a better one though.

  • @SophiaPatience Well when Sesame Street released a Christmas album in the mid 90's, this song was on it, and the vocals were done by hoots the owl and elmo for the most part. bob too

  • @hairsprayman111 Was just thinking that as I shopped on itunes. Watched this movie last night

  • @hairsprayman111 I dunno… It's nice to have the CD version, but I take exception to Sesame's "let's-just-replace-all-our-dead-cast-members-with-Kevin-Clash" attitude towards this song. It's a shame that we still can't get the original recording, with the original vocalists, in glorious digital Hi-Fi stereo.

  • @hairsprayman111 AMEN!

  • i love this video. maria seems like she's really not into that guy as much as he's into her lol just sayin.

  • Maybe deep down inside she has feelings for Luis but doesn't want to hurt David's feelings.(BTW..did anyone notice Luis wasn't in this special?)

  • my sister and i would watch this in the middle of summer we wore out 4 tapes of this special till we got it on dvd :-)

  • the BEST Christmas special ever made. I still watch it every year, and I've grown old(er...) No disrespect to Elmo, but I am glad this xmas movie focuses on BB. I know elmo wasnt around here, but still, that is why i watch this every year

  • This is my favorite Christmas movie. I watch it every year and it makes me tear up, especially when I hear this song. They sing with such emotion...;] Ahhh...such memories...

  • ..well I was born 1988 too but there were lots of reruns shown with him.

  • This special was my only exposure to Mr. Hooper when I was little, outside of the books. I was born in 1988, so Mr. Hooper was already long gone by then :(

  • hey Leave Elmo alone

  • Absolutely beautiful. I wish they played this every christmas instead of the stupid elmo ones. I loved this Chrisitmas special when I was a kid and still do.

  • I wish they would play this song on the radio during Christmas time. Some would argue that its for kids but then again so is Frosty the snowman, Rudolph, The Chipmunks, and the muppetts and I have heard all of those on the radio so there's no reason in my book why they shouldn't air this on the radio during christmas time

  • who plays the man in the ticket booth?

  • As a Child The season just was not complete without this special... so beautiful one of my favorite Xmas songs of all time! Takes us back...

  • we used to have a tape that had the old seasame christmas songs on it! i love this song :)

  • This might be my favorite Christmas song.

  • Maria not with Luis??? What??? I faintly remember the guy who Maria was sitting on.

  • Hi! I'm a Sesame Streeter from waaaay back, having had six kids. At this point is SS, Maria was seen around with David, who was played by Northern Calloway. He passed wway a few years after this. Oldiesman55

  • No he didn't pass away a few years after this. Try TWELVE years later.

This premiered on TV on December 3 1978.

Northern Calloway passed away on January 9 1990 in North Tarrytown, New York from Stomach Cancer.

If you remember, he was on Sesame Street in the 80s since you are a Sesame Streeter from waaaaaaay back.

  • That's David. He used to be Maria's boyfriend. David was working with Mr. Hooper until he took over after Mr. Hooper passed away. Then in 1989, he retired; but the actor really died.

  • That was David... late response but I was born in 74 and he was a big part of the show. He is also in the Scene when they explain to that mr hooper died. (bb called him everything from mr looper to mr pooper). check out mr hooper dies on ss and also i think they have the CBS news broadcasts about his death (i remember). if you are interested... peace, JP.

  • oh, I miss Mr. Hooper....

  • I wasn't around for Mr. Hooper, or for most of these characters. In fact, Luis and Maria got married the year I was born. And yet the classic stuff is still my favorite. You just can't beat the voices and life-lessons of 70s and 80s sesame street.

  • Unless you count the repetition of Elmo's World today. (Sarcasm)

  • *sings* And if that isn't a true blue miracle, I don't know what one is...!

    Good times

  • Cute! I love the subway scene.

  • would this be a paul williams song?

  • You just can't beat Sesame Street! So sweet!

  • I use to have this on VHS! Now, I got it on DVD. The movie is so awesome.

  • OMG! I love this!!!!!

  • my fav christmas video of all time!!

    I just watched it

  • This is so funny, I was just thinking about this song yesterday, and enjoying a sentimental memory of the movie. Thanks so much for posting!

  • Didn't they also do Feliz Navidad that was my favorite one but I can't find it

  • AHHHHH I LOVE THIS SONG. Thanks for posting. <3

  • Not sure why they're not promoting it here, but this special ("Christmas Eve On Sesame Street" from 1978) is available as part of a 3-DVD set called "Happy Holidays from Sesame Street" (with "Elmos World: Happy Holidays" and "Elmo Saves Christmas"). Just got our copy yesterday, woohoo! :-) Such a lovely Christmas song, thanks for posting.

  • I loved watching this as a child and I dug out my old VHS and watched it while decorating the tree this year....And it's still amazing! Grover's interviews with the kids had me in stitches!!

  • I'm so glad to see this other than the other SS Christmas special that came out the same year.

  • I used to have this on VHS when I was a kid. Looking back, it's strange seeing Maria with someone other than Luis.
