  • Ben Johnson surley did not need a stunt double for riding. He was better than all the stuntman in hollywood on horseback anyway. Men like that are rare these days.

  • Great riding by Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr. (whose father, Harry Carey Sr., was one of the film industry's first great cowboy stars) but also a great staging of the scene by director John Ford in continual shots so that the viewer thoroughly know that there are no stunt doubles riding for any of the actors.

  • Johnson and Carey were both great horsemen. Raised on a horse's back their whole lives.

Rio Grande is full of exceptional moments. Great, great movie.

  • This scene is badass, if this was done in today's films they would have sissified this by using wires and CGI.

  • Ben Johnson is really a master here!!

  • Fantastic scene, but where's the part where Claude Jarman does exactly the same thing, i.e. ride 'Roman' style (except he has to fall)? That's the end point to the scene for me.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Brilliant. Brilliant. Arguably the best action-sequence in the whole of cinema because it's real.

  • gets his horse back on its feet, remounts and spurs off, would you? It's almost as memorable a performance as the one you've posted. In any case, thanks again.

  • No comments and only 233 views of one of the most exciting brief moments in movie history, with Ben Johnson and Harry Carey, Jr., doing their own stunt riding...there's just no justice in the world! Thanks for this clip, DukeFan. You wouldn't happen to have the scene from "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," where Johnson is riding full speed across the plains with Indians in pursuit, jumps off and wrestles his horse to the ground, uses it as a barricade while he drops one of his pursuers,

  • @McGrenzer guess you talk about another scene from "Rio Grande". watch one of my latest uploads, thinks thats what do you mean. btw, you're welcome!

  • @McGrenzer

Someone else posted this clip but it was taken down. I commented on that clip. Don't worry, you're not the only one who thinks this is one of the most exciting moments in all of movies. It never fails to thrill me, and I love the humor.
