This guy is a hacker. Reason being I have been trying to do this for over 2 years and I still could not do itAnd if you look at the score, he starts with zero points at the beginning of level 3-1.
You know how in world 3-1 in Super Mario Brothers when you get to the stairs near the end of the level?
Well, there's a turtle over there, right? All you have to do is stomp on it and keep hitting your A button. If you do that, you can keep hopping and jumping and kicking that sucker and get pretty much infinite lives. Cool, right?
But if you keep jumping on that turtle and go over 129 lives, you die! That's it! Game Over! No more lives! What's up with that? Hello! Anyone else see a problem here? Infinite lives means you live forever!
Anyway, I think it sucks, but then again, maybe that's the point. Maybe the guys in that building are trying to teach us a lesson about moderation. You think?
I used to get so many lives on the NES version with this trick that if I died I got a game over. I'd have like crown purple lives and die once. Game over. Be careful with this trick because it has its limits :(
@TheSonicGod It's actually a signed 8-bit integer, meaning that after you get 127 lives, it rolls over to -128, thus producing a Game Over if you beat the level.
this trick is all the way from the old nes version of mario bros. it was a glitch back then, i don't think nintendo ever intended it to exist, you could give yourself lives until you passed 99 and it started showing you strange symbols instead of numbers to represent how many lives you have. anyway i never tried it on allstars, kinda suprised that they put that into the rebuild.
hhahahahah.. i remember doing that once by accident .. i was soooo excited about it.. then again, i was like ten yr old.. lol.. aaaah, some good times.. lol
Thank you for this! I was wondering if this trick worked for the "All Star Version". I only tried a couple of times, but couldn't get it. After watching your video, I wasn't jumping high enough.
Well, SMB1 on the SNES is essentially a 1:1 Copy of SBM1 for the NES, only with 16 Bit Sprite Glory. But who would need that much extralifes in the SNES Version anyway where everything of your progress is saved...
i'm on the same world at the goomba bridge withthe 1upwanted to look this up since i have 3 lives so i wanted to see the trick so iget allot more playing nes version on tv.
so it's much easier on this version than in the original, you had to keep hitting A to keep the momentum, and even then mario would usually stop after about 3 or 4 lives and you'd have to repeat
I just wish they'd make more (difficult) Mario side-scrollers. to me, the formula still works.
On emulator (FDS), I've beaten SMB2j a number of times now, so it's not too bad - but I want to do the 1-1 inf. lives in order to max out the score counter at the end...
Don't worry about it. It's simple. You need to find steps with a koopa troopa walking by. After that, then jump on it. You'll keep bouncing on it continously for a whole LOAD of extra lives. I just thought I'd demonstrate it for everyone that a trick like this lives on.
This can also be done on the Nintendo Entertainment System. I tried it on there and it worked. Just thing is, the number of lives you have will be looking glitched up. And I died approximately 15 times and it never changed.
I remember actually doing this as a kid soooo many years ago on the regular nes version. Your lives go to like crown and box instead of x99 Hahah.

@stuntdude64 I'm no hacker bub. This is the SNES version of Super Mario Bros. This game has the ability to let you start at any world you wish.

Because hex has a limit of FF or 255, if you gain more than 255 lives, the counter will reset to 1.
