'Washington Square' is the original title of the novel by Henry James on which the first film (The Heiress)was also based.This version is closer to the novel and, I think, better in its depiction of the relationship between father-daughter and woman-man. This scene is particularly moving with Salvatore Quasimodo's poem (set to piano music) filling up the room.
@harrietmarlowe They made such beautiful music together....her father's motive's for denying her the opportunity to experience the joy of love, children, etc. are complex. His lack of faith has an enormous impact on her; the abuse of power by a parent has lifelong consequences, tho Catherine rises above his limited definition of her. Amazing screen adaptation.
