Uh, not true at all. The term was already in use in Free People of Color, Gens de Colour Livre, etc. MLK used the term Citizens of Color as well. It came in vogue again as a positive term to contrast with Non-White which was exclusionary. The problem is that There are ethnic minorities not seen as White that are just as light skinned, as well as people of mixed ancestry, and even oppressed peoples from Eastern Europe that technically fit under the category. It stems from Me against Them MO.

I don't see "women of color" as a biological category and it's hard for me to understand how people can do that. But I understand the ramifications of white people calling Women of Color "women of color". The whole discussion should be put more in the context of white liberal feminism minoritizing black feminism in the 1970s and 80s.

You, your family, your friends and loved ones experience any kind of oppression 24/7 and it affects your perspective a great deal. Dialogue doesn't happen "anymore" because any time People of Color speak up, white people like you and I often try to shut them up and stamp them down because it makes us uncomfortable to be called on our shit. Oppressed people have to shout LOUD to be heard.

Wow. Well, that's enough to convert this white boy, I suppose. I always thought "people of color" was ironic, just an inversion of "colored people," and rolled my eyes, thinking white liberals like myself had come up with it.

But that misses a subtlety, that "women of color" expands to include more than one ethnicity, and--critically--that it isn't meant to replace any ethnic designation, but to add another layer over those, a political and practical one. My mistake. Glad I saw this.

@girlintrouble2 Thanks for the comment. The phrase women of color that Loretta is explaining is specific to the US and continues to evolve. Language evolution happens because as groups who have been marginalized gain more power, they get to define themselves. Loretta makes the case that in the US 'women of color' is a term that describes a group of women who share the experience of being marginalized, oppressed, and minoritized. It builds power for communities collectively.

@girlintrouble2 I think I can help you with that answer. "Women of Color" pertains to, in the context of the USA, and hopefully the world, any woman who is not Caucasian. I believe that we as individuals when met with different circumstances are influenced and impressionable. Those kids you used as examples just grew up with different perception of the terminology. I believe you are a woman of color. As for the evolution of the phrases and their meanings as times changed, I cannot speak on that

I had West Indian child minders when I was growing up and have many WI friends I say this to ble clear that my comments are not racist.. What I dont understand is when I was a kid the WI liked to be called "Coloured" then that became racist, then they prefered "Black" which I thought was racist before that(?!) now its WOC. How did that all evolve? Also am i WOC or is that just African Americans? Thanks
