I'm fairly certain he did it for his own purposes and the people who produced the commercial just bought usage rights. Thats generally how they do things.

The artist gets royalties based on the scale of exposure to the masses. It works well for both parties. Company gets cheap song rights and artist gets mainstream exposure -- it's how Moby gained his popularity.
