I am listening to Peter Snell on radio right now 50 years later. An amazing guy, I ran against him in the Mile as an 18 year old, it was a handicap race, I was creamed, I love the memory though. I ran to live, it was my salvation :)
First gold for the invincible Snell. What a beauty, sneaking by on the inside with his stretch drive and maintaining his form as Moens lost his over the last thirty meters.
This was the first time the world saw his greatness. But thanks to YT it won't be the last. Long live Snell, the greatest middle d runner of all time!

Fearsome speed! Snell probably would have destroyed the world record if he hadn't been boxed in with 200 to go. Best finish ever!!

Coming into the 1960 Rome Olympics, it was all but a foregone conclusion that Roger Moens of Belgium, No. 237, would take the gold in the 800M.
What's more, practically no one had heard of Snell, the New Zealander who won the race.
The Kiwi would do even better four years later, taking both the 800M and 1,500M in Tokyo.
Great post. Where'd the footage come from?
