Damn, I cannot make the ship elevator work. The ship has already been filled, but I cannot get to the lower floor :-( The generator has all links set, so I don't really know why it doesn't f***ing work :@
i like how all the ages have to do with connecting different things to make the age better. This is a very beautiful age because it shows how every device needs a source. Voltaic is powerfully detailed. CYAN HAS DONE IT AGAIN.
I've gotta tell you that Amateria trumps this one in my books. Edanna was nothing special. Umm... J'Nanin didn't have one, did it? Unless you count finding the last linking book, which is pretty climactic.
I will only say this, that door doesn't really open, just don't worry about it. I have a question though, what keeps the airship's momentum going? It just seems to spontaneously thrust.
the airship contains steam, which is constantly pulling it up, while the cable it's on pulls it along the path that it follows. It's like a balloon filled with steam, it'll float up just like Helium.
The cable doesn't move at all. The airship is guided along the cable from the hangar to the next two stations by a slight downhill grade (or gravity) until it reaches the last station, at which point (when the vault on the island breaks away from its own base), then the airship floats forward and upward since the island and cable is now elevated from that point forward. Also keep in mind that the airship isn't steam-powered as suggested here, but contains either hot air or helium.
We don't know the balloon is filled with Helium, per se. We do know that whatever gas it contains is enough to keep the craft upright during the journey and lift towards the end. The Voltaic Age has properties of air/gases, water/hydropower and steam, heat, electricity, hydrolics and other physical characteristics which may be part of an ancient age of foreign, supernatural or some other structure of chemistry/physics which may be alien to our own understanding. The same was also true in Riven.
You might also notice that the mechanics, crafts and design of the structures in the Voltaic Age are crude, yet somehow delicate and ornate,... elemental, but also functional in a practical way. Even when the airship hangar opens for the first time, it has a pristine beauty of an ancient device like one of DaVinci's inventions from a previous time and place.
Lastly, the three main ages in MYST EXILE represent three different types of properties... Think of "voltage" for the Voltaic Age, the "Garden of Eden" for the Edanna Age (or the power of sunlight, water, plants and animals), and the "material world" for the Amateria Age (marbles, weights and measures, vibrations, etc., all rolled-up in one large roller coaster like pieces of one big puzzle.
@lieutenantValera the balloon of the airship pulls it up while the cable goes upward and the bottom is attatched to the cable so the ballon pulls the ship forward
OK. Edanna and Amateria solved! I used help only with that "balanced puzzle". I am now in Voltaic, everything i have powered on except for that interesting ship, i cannot open that door near the Jnanin linking book. Dont write me solution, pls, only opinion of that puzzle. Beautiful game, IMO...
It is suggested by the "design" of the Voltaic Age that certain mechanisms are powered by electricity, (hydro-powered), others by steam or hot air, and still others by unknown electromagnetic or static properties. When the airship arrives at the last station, we hear some electrical static which triggers the raising of the vault island. We also see stones floating beneath the island due to unknown static charges, which reminds us to take a look at them from above, later on.
Also, I think that this airship ride is somewhat of a reminder of the Maglev ride from the Age of Riven, but in this case, magnetic principles are not the main propulsion drive as with the Maglev trams.
This was was my favorite age in Exile. I actually solved it all on my own with NO HINTS, compared to the other ages which I needed to look at walkthroughs to solve parts of. Sweet ending, too.
I'm stuck on the age that starts with "J'n". I forgot the name of it. How do you go through that? Right now, the last thing I did was make the "rainbow prism" appear. What's next?
These videos may not make sense to some people. However once you have actually played through all the difficulties, you feel a strong sense of accomplishment as you see almost everything you saw before from a different and more amazing perspective.
Yes, true. Luckily i finally completed it today, in fact the game! I didn't realise on the steam gauge puzzle that i forgot to put the lava back in the lava chamber - man did i feel like an idiot!
I have a Mac g5 up an running just for playing this game.

This age took me the longest to solve in the game. That lava bridge thing drove in insane.

Pretty cool but probly my least favorite of the three.

I agree about Voltaic, but Cyan didn't make this game. Presto studios acquired the rights to make it.

this is the best age ending in the game

After much deliberation with myself:
Amateria > Voltaic > Edanna [others don't matter]

I distinctly remember not being able to do the pipe/gas pressure puzzle for a LONG time. Never clued in on the fact that I had to CREATE the steam.

the airship ride is well done,
I like it in the game,
and I hope there will be MYST 6 :o)

The guide cable could have a slightly upward slope. Or maybe the wind always blows through the canyon in one direction.

i get that the air pulls it up, but how does the cable move it along? the cable doesn't move.

ah, but doesn't the balloon filled with helium (or something of that nature) counterbalance the effect of gravity?

i do as well. Many of the "rides" in the myst games are SO much fun

or the cable breaks and you fly up to the floating island which floats up extremely high, and you're TOWED in by a magnet? lol
