  • I don't think people discuss how amazing this cover art is. If they do, not nearly enough.

  • @godfreyhowatchin that black-line division, the pure separation of one side of the brain from another, real art, real precision, too much, too much for analysis.

  • Never heard that before but Yeah - it sounds like his talkin about the tour and "that guy that looks like a fly's leg!" Love and miss you Don. Abba Zaba!

  • It is said that this is about Don's time in the Bongo Fury era Mothers band and the way Frank treated Don during that time.

  • You taught me; that a carrot is as close as a rabbit gets to a diamond. I heard of your death on the radio; like snake stack smoke snake tentacles fill the room and mop bucket overflow like tears drip from where the lover hangs out. I loved you and lost you and never met you but crows now peck you and ice cream packs you and maggots vex you. And it sure looks funny for such a young dinosaur to be in and old dinosaur’s shoes and they seem so empty without you. I miss you Don
  • i love captain beefheart

  • Captain Beefheart is the Best Rock Musician of All time!

  • HIT ME WHERE THE LOVER HANGS OUT!!

    STOOD BEHIND THE CURTAIN...

  • Some people drink to quiet the voices. I drink to bring them out.

  • O captain my captain

  • this guy really is out of this world....its like he's from another dimension or something....

  • Cap-a-tan, I love and miss you. Frank, I miss you so much too. DZ is keeping it alive the best he can. You are both like good old actors(Grant, Tracey, ect.) they will NEVER be anyone even close to you all. I'll see you one day........................

  • R.I.P Captain.

  • Will be sorely missed.

  • after the sudden and immense change in music during 65, zappa and beefheart were unleashed to explore its break point! experimenting well beyond the sound of the velvet underground or even the fugs, and growing so extreme by mid 66 as to be radical music long before it was coined as such. (later connected with psychedelic rock for lack of its own genre at the time).. each genius now sadly missed but somehow r.i.p. doesn't seem to apply. he and frank surely be tearing it up wherever they are! :)

  • With him up there, weather will never be the same.

  • this man is hanging out with some weird cats right now

  • que en descanse en paz..... un ciclo se cerro.... ya no nos quedan buenos artistas :(

  • Beefheart's really pissed here.

Somebody needs to use this as chase music in an action movie. Seriously - it would be the Captain's honor.

  • RIP CAPTAIN

the cap'n and zappa are in heaven now making sweet sweet music together again

  • @sparkzie123 Muffin men for the win.

  • Adios Captain.

  • R.I.P. Captain. :(

  • RIP CBH

  • RIP Cap ='[

  • I love his scathing condemnation in his delivery on this song. Whoa. Wouldn't want to be the object of his disaffection here!

  • Someone's had too much to think ... R.I.P.

  • captains best song ever ,,, so sorry he has left us.. his light will shine bright for ever .. don thanks for enlighting me to the world of music....

  • RIP . The king is dead. :(

  • The whole song in brilliant, wicked, swinging drums, and goofy rhythmic guitars. But it's the dirge hits in the "middle" "wham-wham-whamwhamwham" w/ Beefheart squeezing "Yeeew yooosed meee forran ashtraeee haaarrt."

    So weird, so wonderful.

  • thye four ppl that disliked this should be stabbed on a porpupine fence!!!!

  • Make invalids out of supermen!

  • i feel like a glass shrimp, in a pink panty

  • Ok so Beefheart was brought up spoilt rotten as an only child - and he was free to express himself a bit more - does that make him a bad guy

  • still have this recording ..."on vinyl"...from back in the highschool days ...I'm gonna dig it out and listen to the whole thing ...aaaahhh GEEZER memories ..i used to pork my sweetheart and dance naked with her in my bedroom listening to this ....wonder if she remembers. . . . . . . . . . .I SURE DO !

  • @filthbomb Sex to beefheart is quite amazing.

  • @TheKeswickGallagher how do you know what sex to beefheart is?wtf

beef heart is a true slam poet.....

  • I've listened to the Birthday party forever, but I cant believe i never found captain beefheart until now

  • @hakeber138 I just recently got turned on to Beefheart, and im surprised i just found him too.

  • "i feel like a glass shrimp"

what an awesome thing to say

  • @bradthompson86 is says "glad shrimp."

  • I had the CD about a week before it got stolen, and I had just gotten around to ripping it.

  • I approve of this

  • Now... this is what righteous testimony sounds like.

  • case of the punks

  • this is so freaking genius

  • Look for the BBC documentary "Under Review Trout Mask Replica" It is chock full of info you never knew but will thrill you!

  • @Arkthespriteman Really, there is no Primus without Captain Beefheart.

  • We're talking about the SNL performance? I saw it on Comedy Central back in the sweet 90's and when I saw Beefheart (already being a big Zappa fan) play this song...it was...well, religious. Transcendental. But that episode. GOD! That entire season of '80 was sick and diseased. Particularly Charles Rocket (and his infamous usage of "fuck" on air) who I learned to loathe. That was until I found out that he'd been murdered a few years back. Felt sorry for the guy.

  • He wasn't murdered. He committed suicide. And Charles Rocket was a great actor. He was in a lot of memorable films. It just was very hard to get writers for SNL after such great writers had departed.

  • Nothing wrong with the stripes covers, but a 2 person band simply cannot cover beefheart proficiently. Well china pig is great and party of special things to do really isn't one of the captains strongest songs

  • I'm 51 and never got him until 2 weeks ago. Fantastic. Thank god for you Tube.

  • so THIS is where metal originated from O.O

  • a squid eating dough in a polyethaline bag!

  • where is the SNL live video?! must watch it again.. cant find it must watch cant find watch find watch time one more find watch cant find again must again and i again must love.

  • Scary and freaky. I like it!

  • Oh, Captain, why did you have to subject the poor SNL audience to this?

  • His performances were the highlight of the night. Trust me lol.

  • I own the episode. Believe me, they weren't.

That episode isn't as bad as people say it is... "worst SNL episode" my ass.

  • just got the episode today and yeah you're right damn ppl just didnt give them a chance did they?

  • Not really, no... even though that particular episode was weak, next week's episode was actually pretty decent. Just a shame they had to do the Macdowell disaster so close to the start of the season.

  • yeah it was a weak episode but i meant that it wasnt as bad as ppl would like to make it out to be lol. But anyway at least the captain performed pretty well that night lol

  • Moody and groovy, there's still a whole load of attitude for current acts to pick up on, Beefheart is consistently eclectic.

  • Beefheart IS the king, and you know it.

  • i totally agree!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I feel like a glass shrimp!

  • case of the punks.

  • that white stripe boozey puffed fellow wishes he could touch this with his ferndale fingers.....

  • Hey, it's an interpretive cover, and he brought a sleazy adolescent edge to it, if you don't like it, shut up, but I think it's refreshing

If Hendrix had thought like you he never would have developed All along the Watchtower into what it is

They're both good, but this does have a bit more "kick" to it, those drums sound SO awesome too, just a huge resounding thunk

  • Just because somebody doesn't like what you do doesn't mean they have to shut up. The White Stripes cover of this and Party of Special Things to Do are *horrible*. Now shut up :)

  • I love this song... Captain in my (ashtray)heart!

  • This album is a fascinating listen. The lack of effects, click tracks and production is even more awesome sounding now that most musicians cannot live without their ProTools!

  • Absolutely brilliant! Fucking nutcase!

    I love this song.

  • a man on a porcupine fence

open up another case of the punks

  • A man on a porcupine fence, hit me where the lover hangs out...lol. Stood behind the curtain, while i was going out...lol.

  • "somebodys had too much to think" one of the best lyrics going

  • quote that everyday watchin the media!

  • Comment removed

  • @mancpartizan unfortunately one of his less challenging lyrics, a hangover from the 'tragic band' era no doubt. "i feel like a glass shrimp"; "hit me where the lover hangs out"; "a man on a porcupine fence"; "send you mother home your naval": so many great lyrics besides.

  • @billyshitcheese2 Actually, that line is one that he's used frequently throughout his life. A catchphrase of sorts that just jappened to work its way into a song.

  • @ComradeBlue i'm sure you're right. can you give me a couple of examples?

  • @mancpartizan Make invalids out of Superman!

  • Comment removed

  • Although an avid fan of the White Stripes, I have to say that I like this version better (and Party of Special Things to Do, too).

  • does this guy sound like lemmy from motorhead a little?

    great stuff...

  • rotfl, maybe same timbre of voice, a bit, but no, not really. Lemmy is more gravelly and has that freaking awesome Manchester accent.

  • ♪♫ ♥

  • psshh... the white stripes over beefheart... gimme a break.

  • I saw the Captain do this on Saturday Night Live, and never forgot it. I would love to see that again someday. That was really weird and wonderful.

  • pazzensutra, theres a beefheart homepage called "the captain beefheart radar station", they have a low quality video of that snl performance. look for it there and you shall find it!

  • Yeah I like The White Stripes version more. But this is definitely original, a very fine work!

  • Im sure Jack White himself would disagree with what you said......but different strokes for different folkes!

  • For anyone interested, the song refers to beefHEART (get it?) ideas being ripped off by the New Wavers in the mid 70s. I love Don to bits!, but I think he was bein a bit petulant! after all, look how the Blues itself was ripped to bits, particularly for financial gain leaving its originators in poverty. Music is for the taking - "If it sounds good it is good" - D. Ellington

  • ein super song^^

  • nice song and beat but im sorry i have to laugh hah!

  • You're supposed to. It's ok.

  • I love the Captain.

    Brilliant music.

  • Somebody's had too much to think is a timeless line. Apropos to these times we live in.

  • that disease is runnin rampid these days!

  • lol this song is good but it sounds like a pissed off groundskeeper willy.

  • That is the greatest thing ever said about this song

  • catchy!

  • captain beefheart is probably one of the most creatively original musicians ever. No-one else really compares to that level of musical innovation.

  • @ofxxxthexxxflowers if you ask me, besides the vocals, those jungle-ass drum beats make this style

  • @ofxxxthexxxflowers Frank Zappa? =)

  • @ofxxxthexxxflowers Tom fucking Waits asshole.

  • @Satanamo666 Tom Waits said Captain Beefheart was a major influence on his change in artistic direction.

  • @booe999 they are both otherwordly fantastic. Case closed.

  • This song's really the BOMB. One of the best tracks of the album so far.

I make invalid out of supermen!

  • come on the white stripes are incredible....

....somebody's had too much to think

    don't be a douche

  • Jack White loves Captain Beefheart, I'm sure of it.

  • The live version on SNL is way better than this.

  • They pulled it. This and "Hothead". Maybe someone will put it back.

  • here's the difference between captain beefheart and the white stripes:

    captain beefheart is the shit.

white stripes are just plain shit.

  • it's sad how people compare the white stripes to beefheart... just cause jack covers his songs (always, shittily) doesn't make him the next don van vliet. though it's good that jack is inspiring people to venture into beefheart. BUT HE'S NOWHERE NEAR HIM! sheesh, it doesn't mean he sucks. beefheart's just untouchable

  • solargeesture; The white stripes are very original and unique in their own...so can't you understand cover songs DONT ALWAYS SOUND THE SAME!!!!! But I love beefheart as much as you do =]

  • it's not about sounding the same, i mean they could turn into a salsa tune for all i care (which might not be a bad idea, hmmm) but you gotta give atleast 67.65438% of your soul to the endeavor. we need people truly busting their brains and bodies to get what's necessary out of themselves. i wish i had a camera to upload myself onto you tube and show all you fools what i am speaking of. here's a true fool, an ascending moron of true faith!!!!!!

  • the white stripes play it better in my opinion

  • Captain Beefheart does not do punk.

He goes in his own way.

    That's why I love him a lot.

  • The generation at hand has the listening ear.

  • The most bizarre fact from the last two albums was that most songs were written in the time Trout Mask was written :P

I make invalid out of super men. HOW GENIUS!

    EXCELSIOR!:D

  • I noticed that. Some of the melodies were even written around the days of Safe as Milk and It Comes to You In a Plain Brown Wrapper.

  • well, a lot of songs of doc and crow were written during the seventies as well. but yeah, i like trout, lick, doc and crow the best.

  • wow...

  • I miss a video of this song in live at a TV show, it was uploaded two times and removed by youtube :'(

    PLEASE

if u have it contact me !

  • It was $aturday Nigh t Live from maybe 1981, I remember seeing it when it aired.

  • i need that videooooo :'( it was my favourite in the whole you tube ...

  • great =D

  • Thanks for posting the original so we can all compare it to the White Stripes Version. This is great!

  • captain beefheart is a legend

  • My very first crush. I love Captain Beefheart. Always will. I'd love to spend one minute with him in a studio while he created a song, any song. Hopefully to me, willfully, whistfully, hopefully, a love song back to me.

    Love to CB,

    C
