the neck is so flat and thin, and the neck is probably set very level to the bridge, unlike most guitars where the strings are close near the neck and are farther away near the bridge. thats my guess. and he's using small gauge strings.

You gotta know how they became famous at all first. Vai was extremely lucky. He came out at the right time, and he was the first to do a lot of things. People didn't bother listening to the music because obviously that was out of style back then, and technicality was the true victor. Steve Vai probably doesn't get any new fans anymore though. Most of the new listeners I've seen don't really like his works. I'm one of them. Vai couldn't compose Learning to Live -DT let alone write lyrics.
