  • @ olddavid4 - BRM did make an 'H' configuration 16 cylinder but that was in 1966/7. This car is from around 1949-52 as far as I am aware. It is 1.5 litres. I was lucky enough to meet Sir Stirling Moss earlier this year and I asked him about driving the car, which he did on several occasions. He didn't much care for it as the steering column has umpteen universal joints so as to navigate around the engine, so it has a relatively large amount of "play" in it and it was not at all reliable!

  • Wasn't that engine built in an "H" configuration? Surely the physical dimensions seen here - even calculating something as small as 2.0 litres - would have to be longer. I'm old, though, so I'm just trying to recall.

  • WTF ????????

  • The only other way is to push it, which I understand is the most common way this car is moved around...

  • Great gorgeous sound, just love it... nevertheless I was wondering if there's some chance to get the car moving in a quiter fashion

  • english technology is suck

  • @iancflorian Aside from your statement not actually making any grammatical sense; that must be why the majority of current F1 teams are based in and run out of England (Renault, Force India, Red Bull, McLaren, Lotus, Virgin, & Williams). I struggle to recall the zenith of Romanian technology in 1947....by the way, the worldwide web, over which you are communicating your views, was invented by an Englishman.

  • @benwm246 the internet was invented by Al Gore. are you saying he's an englishman?

  • Radical SR8 LM says otherwise you ignorant cunt @iancflorian

  • NEVER allow a "driver" with a chrome helmet into the cockpit!

  • The guy with the earmuffs and walking cane...he DOES simply walk into Mordor :)

  • Dear lord, what's he DOING to that poor thing? Isn't torture a violation of the Geneva convention?

  • why does he keep revving it like that, couldnt he see the smoke?

  • something wrong yes?

  • Sounds pretty tough on the engine. Any reason for the thrashing?

  • i thought the guy with the walking stick was gonna whack him over the head and tell him to engage the fucken clutch....

  • So much oil in the air...

  • guy with the crutch was last weeks driver! ;)

  • @Axbent XD

  • now you see, that is a car!

  • It revs to 12000 rpm and has to start on different plugs till its warm and then change them over.Unfortunately if your too slow the hot plugs foul and hey presto a v11.

That is what i imagine happened and by revving he is trying to clear the cylinders to fire them up.Very difficult when it run over 5 bar boost and i think is on methanol.

It's ok to do that but not for too long.

  • Is he trying to blow it up or something? Because he's doing an awful good job of fucking up a priceless engine.

  • @TestECull no, hes warming it upp, and trying to clear the motor out...those motor wer tough as nuts...it aint blowin anytime soon...hence why its still around

  • @giju6600 The BRM V16 was notoriously unreliable

  • I hope the show up to the Gold Cup next week

  • anybody wishing to see this car in action doing 2 laps of silverstone in all its glory go to.....vscc silverstone 1990....and watch....its orsome

  • One of the BRM's was doing a hill climb a few years back and I was seriously considering driving 300 miles round trip just so I could hear a piece of British automotive history in action. The sound that thing makes sends a shiver down your spine. The though of getting behind the wheel and racing it at high speed is numbing. Why they even built such a complex engine is ludicrous and at only 1.5 litre it will surely never be repeated.

Anyone know when any of them will be on the track?

  • Worm Up

    PS: Looool :D

  • it came to close to a toyota.. poor thing

  • Great video...BUT...This is no way to treat any engine, let alone a rare peice of racing engineering history. It would sound good if it wasnt being thrashed within an inch of its life (from cold I presume?)

Wouldnt you have thought that someone who can afford to own a car like this would be able to afford to pay the right people to get it running right?...then open it up down the back straight for all to hear!

  • What is the point of revving it like that? Fucking pointless. Maybe they were trying to blow it up.

  • @fuhkinay It's been though worse I can imagine.

  • Probably sounds better under load

  • Oh man.. I love this car. Where was this? I adore the sound of the BRM V16, but this particular one sounds like it's hurting and in need of an overhaul.

  • i m not sure but i think "Goodwood 2008"

  • Shame it sounds like a tin can.

Cant blame it though. That's just too much power for an engine that itty bitty. You can get it to work, but it'll allways sound like you're ripping apart space and time. XD

  • yes 600 BHP!!!!! at 11500-12000

  • please ..(someone who knows) what was the horsepower output of that engine, and at full song surely it must have been a handfull, what with crossply' tyres, and them not too wide!! and what about stopping!! what was it's top speed..lots of questions but I just gotta know!! that beastie is a masterpiece of mechanical sound engineering..if nothing else!!

  • im not sure but i think its hp rating is around the 600 mark

  • The powerwas measured at 585 BHP in early 1952 after a winter development. Yes it was a handful, not least due to the engine torque characteristics. As for stopping, it had disc brakes during the first era in which racing cars were so fitted. As a generality, discs tended to be unreliable which is why Mercedes, Ferrari and others stuck with drums for several years after.

  • is that actually a BRM V8 or maybe V11 or V13, doesn't sound like a full V16 lol Great video though and will sound very impressive despite not running properly. Have to try to see it inaction next year

  • Thankyou. Very true, it wasn't on a full compliment and actually didn't race that year. It was deafening nevertheless! I was very disappointed not to hear it run on the track. You can apparently hear it all the way around Goodwood!

  • @benwm246 Of all the cars recorded for Nick Mason's 'Into The Red', his BRM V16 MkII is the only one you can hear right round the track. From memory (the book's at home) it goes for about 5 - 6 minutes, and "seems to" feature the car going around the track twice - I say "seems to", as in the text it speaks of it hardly ever running, despite endless rebuilding, and fettling, so perhaps it's been edited.

It 's an absolute joy to listen to, as loud as you dare!

Thanks so much for your clip!

  • @Stevieraylittlewing How funny you should mention Nick Mason's book as the day I read your message, I was given his "Passion for Speed" book in which he talks about the very things you mention, unsurprisingly, given that it is about the same car. The book also has an audio CD with recordings of the cars. Nothing quite sounds like that BRM though. I was at "An evening with Stirling Moss" a little while ago and he talked about what a tough car it was to drive as well as its terrible unreliability.

  • @benwm246 Both "Into the Red" and "Passion for Speed" are the same book. "Passion for Speed" is the re-release of "Into the Red". I guess people were confused as to what the book was about exactly. I read this in "Octane" Magazine: Issue 90 - December 2010 - under Nick Mason's dedicated column.

  • Yes it was a MK 2 V16 but not running properly, in fact it caught the bodywork on fire in the assembly area. Thanks to Brian Hardyman (in the jumper fingers in ears) he looked back and saw smoke and relaised she was the only car in the assembly area and ran back having grabbed an extinguisher to put her out! They would not let it run or demo without the engine cover or sidepanels. They hand more extinguishers in the area the next day though!

  • Actually it's the Mark 1 from the National Motor Museum. Fluted radiator intake with scoop added on top, longer tail and longer exhaust.

  • if you can find such an engine as a v11 or v13 i will lick your shoes, u obviously dont know much bout enignies but in a v u cant get odd numbers cylinders unless ur a yankee .

  • I suggested it might be a V8, 11 or 13 because it's obviously not firing on all of its 16 cylinders - a joke! Although not an expert, I know plenty about engines. Perhaps its you that needs to get a sense of humour.

  • @nannynobnobs bollocks! that's rubbish!!

  • He's just saying it's not firing on all 16, thus making it a 13 or 11.

  • Well if you're prepared to come to New Zealand you can lick my shoes because Daihatsu made (maybe even STILL makes) a V3 1,000 cc engine.

  • i know we have daihatsu here n they are not v3 they are straight 3s.

  • Oh well, they were V3's here in New Zealand. Google "Daihatsu V3". It was a 993cc engine. I drove an automatic one once and it couldn't pull a sailor off yer sister. LOL

  • @swiftfb90racer you can quite clearly hear it has 16 cylinders...

  • @swiftfb90racer V11 or V13? Do you even know anything about cars/engines? your an idiot.

  • @musicwatchquattro

You obviously did not get him.

He meant that the engine is not running on all cylinders, that's why he said it is actually a V11 or V13.

  • rev her higher boys and make her scream - louder!!!!!!!

  • that noise is sensational!

  • "damnit...wheres 1st!!!" .........hahahaha

  • Thank you.

  • would like 2 c this car back at silverstone at the coys meeting or vintage meetings...would be a REAL crowd puller

  • I can almost feel the pain that they all felt in their ears.

  • Run like hell!!!!! that suckers gonna blow!!!!

  • She is the Mk 2 from out of the Beaulie museum. Its sweet spot is between 10,000rpm and 12,000rpm if you are brave enough and can get it running properly. So he is not over reving it just keeping it turning over and not stalling her. I am afraid it keeps a cottage industry in business for another year each time it runs as they have to put it back in one piece again. Awesome old girl she is.

  • it doesn't get on song untill 6000 RPM

  • yeah rev that cold antique engine till it blows up-.-

  • If this was 08 Revival the exhaust temp set the body paint on fire in the assembly area on day one. With no extinguishers about they almost lost the precious beast! Wrong mix and it looked like a wrong exhaust pipe contour the cause? Well done Brian Hardyman for runnig back with an extinguisher!

  • where is the damn first gear????

  • great way to blow up a piece of awesome history.hit him with that stick.

  • runs on petrol alcohol and acetone

  • best vid of this screamer ever

  • this is incredible, what i would give to hear that in person
