@laurencefrazer treads on tires are there for rain, dirt, and snow. Slick tires are softer and without tread offer the most traction. Only good on dry pavement though. Also wear out very quick. They're suggested for racing only.
Like in mopeds or cars or any engines. When fully cylinders and pistons are installed or replaced, you must NOT rev it or it will cut off for sure. Trust me, I have cut off 5 engines because of careless and cheap price for new parts.
lol hope your wife dont sound like the lady at the start... or is that why you hate her?? ;) your prob way to busy but i just made a small guess what im doing sound/ clip... be funny to see what you come up with :)
@ateraxai Any 4 stroke engine should be broken in hard. There is a video on here of a F1 engine being broken in.....they take it up to red line and hold it there. They do the same with expensive car engines before they even leave the factory. They do the same with Goldwings...because they know the owners won't be hard enough on them. Full throttle or no throttle with a new engine. You don't need to go fast.....you just need to accelerate hard to the speed limit and then slow back down, repeat.
@mrpunisher123451 the first start is the most important!!! thats why you have to double check everything and fully know your engine has been built perfect before the first start .. cost tooo much money to waste a real race engine on not building it right and finding out on your first start something went wrong or got forgotten!
@13mordeth If that is the case, then the motor would already be broken in when bought. I followed manual under 4k for first 400mi and under 6k 'til 1000mi. Why would they tell us the wrong way to break it in?
@13mordeth Not saying you are wrong, I have heard the same from many people. I really just did it for warranty purposes. So if something breaks they cannot say I mistreated it.
@13mordeth it's the same on 2-strokes as well i ride MX in the 125 and 250 class and i break my bikes in the same in fact i think i'm harder on them brand-new than i am after about 5 to 10 trips to the track
Everyone has opinions on this topic. For a street vehicle I say use the factory recommended break in procedure. For race vehicles (especially drag), then you can use hard break in. Piston rings are not the only thing being broken in. Concern for correct wear of oil pump components, bearings, really any moving part should be the thought for and engine that you want to see many miles. Honda's factory run is designed for inspection and to help pass some of the assembly lube.
Like I said, everyone has their procedure. I went with a slow procedure after I did my winter project (cylinders, pistons, cams, lifter, oil pump, cam plate, etc.) After all those it would be like breaking in a new bike. After the slow break in though, I have no excess oil burn and now blow by. In the end its your money. Break in how you feel. I'm just trying to get 100k out of the build i just did. We'll see.
@2gcdma We have a "proper" large race track. But like all proper race tracks it costs a lot of money to use it. And this small track is still plenty exciting for me.
@Reeso2112 the manual for my 2011 250r says to ride it bellow 4,000 rpm at all times for the first 800km (roughly 500miles) give it three minutes to warm up on idle before any operation to let oil flow to all the moving parts. Run it to a max of 6,000rpm between 800-1600km's. Don't rev the engine to excess in nuetrel either. It also warns about wearing in your tires, they will be less effective for the first 160km's.
@Kaemajii And you should ignore all that and instead do 1/4 mile sprints for 50 miles and then change the oil and you're done breaking in the engine. It's as simple as that.
@BedsideGnome They want you to buy a new vehicle when the engine wears out. And they don't want to be liable in court for telling you to do it the proper way.
While you were filming that Ducati I was wondering, what are your thoughts about the 2 cylinder vs the 4 cylinder engines? Which one do you prefer and why?
@Reeso2112 take it easy let it warm up and cool down till the 1st service then, if its efi once u get it back from service disconect the battery for 2hrs average. and reconnect the ecu will adapt to ur post running in riding style
@Reeso2112 There are two schools of though with engine break in, one is the motoman method which is basically to ride it very hard off the bat (do a search on google), the other is to read the instructions in your manual (soft break in) that will come with your bike. Take you choice, the only thing both methods agree on is after the initial break in you MUST get an oil and filter change. BTW I did a soft break in and my bike has a stated top speed of 128mph, I recently hit 136mph on it.
Best way to break in an engine is to 'ride it like you stole it' right off the bat. Everyone I know that has broke in a new engine this way has had a more responsive/powerful bike, compared to others that baby it during break in. Also, ignore the tool that said to change your oil every 500 miles for the first 1500. That is just a waste of money.
@13mordeth the method described on mototuneusa when googling for "break in secret" describes a good process. also it kind of makes sense why it's good to break it in like that. could put it on your site. might be usefull for several people :)
@13mordeth yes but most people who buy new bikes dont have enough experience so when they ride hard they wont just break the engine, they may break their heads! and i've seen it when i picked my bike, the idiot reved hard and went into gear then slammed on the front brakes and flipped, they called the ambulance for him
Now i have no idea how to do it...go hard?? Take it easy?? Manual? No manual? BTW!!!!! M13 i did a biker rave vid for shits and giggles ..u should watch it and lemme know what you think:p
@Reeso2112 i was on a 2009 250 and have been on a 2009 zx6r for a couple years. if you wanna do it right, just ride casually. that's it. keep the rpms changing. don't cruise for a long period of time. done beat the hell out of it trying to accelerate as fast as possible and dont redline it. also don't rev it in neutral to show off. and change the oil ever 500 miles til you hit 1500. you'll have a gorgeous engine. (ps, do not do the manual way: under 4k rpms for 500mi)
Mordeth, what is your pro opinion on using 120/70x17 and 140/70x17 instead of 110 & 130 (stock)? Obv, there is a much greater variety to choose from in the bigger sizes.
