Frankenstein.. oh yes, Einstein. "Work" is just the application of energy, but there is also potential energy, thermal energy and so on. Just because something doesn't 'do' anything doesn't mean it's not full of some kind of energy. Think of an atom bomb for example. The trick is to know how to harvest the energy.
