I wish Stuart had sought the help he needed. He had a unique voice and Big Country are one of the few bands I can listen to for hours on end. R.I.P. Stuart.
People will be listening to this in 100 years, and as for the crap people listen to today..... well that is instantly forgotten! We miss you Stu, Big Country marches on WITH you not without you!!
Although the sentiment behind this song is all too obvious, and I can't help feeling Stuart I love this song, the guitar riffs are brilliant, its a song that just rattles around my mind for days on end. What a shame Stuart's not here.
always enjoy seeing the big country with a small drum kit.why ''alone'' and ''ships'' were selected as singles from what is probably their finest moment remains a mystery i'll never understand.driving through rural new york tonight skipped right over ''ships''.twice.
Reach for the light! Walking in the brightist places now, with the sky the way he is (I hope and expect). William Stuart Adamson 1958-2001. God knows how much I liked and now love his music.
och away man i met stuart adamsom in aberdeen & he was totally together he innvited me & some pals to his pub in dunfermiline & he was there & a true gentleman
How was this not a top ten hit for these guys in North America?it rocks,it's catchy the video is perfect for the song. But I never once heard it played on the radio or saw the video played on MTV or Much Music in Canada.I will never understand the failure ro recognize the brilliance of this band.
CFNY played it for a limited time. I remember telling my friend at the time that Stuart was trying to show his guitar chops. I knew he was incredible guitarist but Big Country before this had a lot of fills. The problem is and will always will be that one needs to have that great solo to create creds. Stu had great ability and great music sense that unfortunately will never be appreciated like it should.
Wow, I never even knew there WAS a video for this! Buffalo Skinners is such a brilliant piece of work, and it's a shame not only that their music was underappreciated, but that we lost such a great songwriter/musician far too soon!
Great vid! Where did you get it? Because of rights issues, this and Ships were not on the USA dvd. Someone said they were on the Canadian one and I just ordered it, it arrived and these 2 songs are not mentioned on the back. Except for the little Canadian sticker, the 2 cases look identical. Thanks!!!
The Buffalo Skinners is their best record. You have to love the songwriting and Simon Philips on drums. It should have propelled the band to superstar - level. But it wasn´t meant to be...
Great vid, thanks for posting.I think the album this comes from ie the buffalo skinners, is there best album of all. Not a bad track on there. This one, long way home and what are we working for ? are just awesome tracks. So glad I saw them in concert as many times as I did.......Rest in peace Stuart.
Mark Brzezicki was the original drummer and played on most albums. On this track and album (buffalo skinners), i think the drummer was simon phillips or something like that...and by the way, where can i get this video. I'm a huge Big Country fan and never knew there was a video for this song.
I was at the Pinkpop festival in Holland in June 1984. I can only remember The Pretenders and Big Country, although there were 5 or 6 great groups on. That might be a link to the drummer? Ok, maybe not. Stuart and Bruce wandered through the crowd, saying hi to everyone. Also borrowed my Lion Rampant for the stage. I'm afraid an excess of dancing, red wine and sunshine prevented me from the promised aftershow flag retrieval. Pished would be the appropriate term. But happy.
P.S. Mark Brzezicki also played on "Alone" on Top of the Pops in March 1993. It would seem he was now a permanent fixture with the band again. He would play on the final two albums as well, "Why the Long Face" in 1995, and "Driving To Damascus" in 1999.
I can't believe it is 15 years since this track was released. When I first heard Simon Bates play it on Radio 1 it blew me away, such was its power. To hopefully clear-up issues regarding drummer Mark Brzezicki, he left Big Country in July 1989, but appeared as the drummer on 1991's "No Place Like Home" album as an 'additional musician'. Simon Phillips played on "The Buffalo Skinners" album released in March 1993, but Brzezicki rejoined in time to be the drummmer to play on the album's tour.
Saw the "Buffalo Skinners" tour at the Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ. (Springsteens' began career here). Great show. About 300 people...BUT BC ROCKED BIG TIME!!!!
Thanks for posting - One of my favourite SA songs, melancholy and rocky at same time.
Saw them at Town and Country Club on the Thursday they played Top Of The Pops live with - was a bit concerned watching them on the pub TV while I was across the road from the venue - Love you Stuart!
Neither of those were singles, so wouldn't have videos. Singles off driving to Damascus were Fragile Thing (which is on YouTube), Perfect World (two versions - Kosovo version very good) & See You (which I haven't noticed).
i am a massive big country a fan and saw them live lots in the 80s. i have lots of their singles b sides and 12" records....the last time i saw stuart and the band was as a fan at a record signing in oxford street in london in the early 90's...... hard 2 believe he's gone...when he died i just wrote over my home page with the lyrics to one of his greatest songs.... his songwords will never be bettered, he wanders 13 valleys even now... i like this song... thanks 4 posting..
