As far as what he is "trying to look like", in my extensive study I've gathered that this character is contrived to release an inner demon that he confesses all throughout his career as "the madness", which is true in a sense of 'twisted" desires he possesses, and vice-versa. You will notice as his career matures, he is more subdued and calm as his 'demon' is calmed by the ability to exorcise his inner anger- so to speak. Thus explaining his eagerness to 'find' a band. Also, his general rough singing voice, it's a technique called distortion, done in the cavity above your vocal chords.
