  • There are three INDEPENDENT,clearly separated,BRANCHES of any democratic government:

    Executive(President&Vicepresident)

    Parlamentary(Congress)

    Judiciary(Judges)

It is called DIVISION OF POWER,as in,through CHECK AND BALANCES,to prevent that someone,or government itself, concentrateS too much power, turning a democratic society into an authoritarian regime.

That is why the Vicepresident, being part of the EXECUTIVE,IS ONLY ALLOWED TO CAST A VOTE IN CONGRESS WHEN NEEDED A TIE-BREAKER.

    And that's it

  • This makes me wonder what Palin thinks is the job of the president! Frightening.

  • McCain seems to pick these women based on their head shots. Palin and Pfotenhauer did huuuuge damage to his campaign.

  • "Smile and nod, just smile and nod. It'll be over soon."

  • wow, he was pretty hard on her. i wouldn't mind doing that too.

  • Neither of those women know anything.

  • Am i the only one here seeing a Joe biden bias here?, they are arguing about something stupid, and is just a way of saying that Biden is better than palin, I dont really care for neither of them, but is interesting how the media uses such small things like this to brain wash people. no one cares about the fucking vice president, the vice president does nothing for the fucking country, really, lets worry about something more meaningful like....i dont know,.. Global Warming?

  • To say that the vice president has no role in influencing policy and advising the president is simply absurd. It is obvious that the Vice President is not allowed to overstep the authority of the president, dictate policy, or operate outside of the Presidential supervision. How does Matthews define the role so strictly, but in regards to Biden active policy role says "it's up to the president"?

Ms Pfotenhauer simply made the mistake of appearing on this loony toon's show.

  • @Herbunder he was asking the role according to the constitution

  • lawls...

    her smile is so funny.

  • Totally destroyed, like the GOP in '08 and hopefully '10 and '12.

  • not destroyed at all

  • LOL.... hard to figure who the bigger moron(s) are.... Matthews or the dumbphucks commenting here.

The answer she gave "supporting the pres" & "presiding over the Senate" is exactly correct. Just cause the VP would take over if the Pres died, does not make that their primary role.

That's like saying the burger flippers primary role is to take over the restaurant if everyone else is run over by a bus.

  • the amount of douchebaggery in this clip is suffocating.

  • She is CLUELESS!!! Wow. That was a terribly easy question.

  • Softballs CM tries to sound tuff by hammering a question that is meaningless. Joe Biden doesn't know what the VP's roll is either. You don't see him receiving the same question.

  • That's why it is called Hardball. LOL

  • water under the bridge here.....but you shouldn't need to be a "constitutional scholar" to know what the constitutional role of the VP is supposed to be -- especially if you're a spokesperson within the political system. I'm so happy that I'll never see Pfotenhauer's phony face and rhetoric again.

  • I'm a Dem and this Guy is an Idiot. Sure the Vp's actual legal powers are weak. Why didn't she ask what's the Legal Job of the First lady? the first lady starts and supports all kinds of agenda's much like the VP. Is there any thing in the Constitution about it, no.... but it doesn't say they can't have a supportive roll to the Pres either.

  • Nancy is so gorgeous, but so obviously a dumbass for trying to back Palin.

  • Nancy Pfotenhauer thinks she's going to win the argument by smiling and acting pretty.

I had forgotten how CLUELESS Sarah Palin really is.

  • Hoooooooooly smokes....Chris did well!

  • Republican Dennis Hopper voted for President Obama because of Palin.

  • Good old Chris. Gotta love him. And Bill was very smart to keep his mouth shut.

  • Poor Nancy. Insert foot...

No wonder the repubs lost the election.

Read the US Constitution and learn something...

  • "I'm not a constitutional lawer"??????. What an utter and unmitigated jackass. The GOP have some serious problems if they have advisors such as NP. This is something most people learn very early on but usually forget. BUT, if it is part of your job to advise a presidential candidate, the very least one can expect is to know one or two simple and salient points of the constitution. She is not asked to memorise the Gettysberg address or the method of extracting spent Uranium from fission reactors.

  • John McCain got CRUSHED in states that went for President Bush in 2004.

  • I just can't believe people are suggesting that Palin is the future of the part......

Do they want to lose every election going forward?

  • Oh no, Nancy knew. But Nancy isn't an objective political commentator: she's an ex oil lobbyist and makes a living off presenting another group's case - be it a business or a candidate.

Nancy knew, but to be candid would have defeated her purpose.

I would grant to some degree a margin of error for Palin's comments. BUT, after her comments at the VP debate, this shows that she has an inflated sense of her own self-worth and power.

  • scratch that last comment. I hadn't watched more than a few seconds. What I should have said is errrm... She looks like mary poppins.

  • the interviewer destroyed her- by asking her a question she could not answer.

  • AND I'll set you straight on the "socialist" argument, people. ANY time you pay a tax, that's "spreading the wealth." The question is about who you spread it to.

  • I think I love you.

  • Dick Cheney isn't exactly a good example to use when it comes to well... legality. He DOESN'T have presiding role over POLICY DEVELOPMENT. That warps the constitution. Just because Cheney acts in a certain manner, that sure as hell doesn't make it in line with the constitution.

  • Heres more facts.....

FACT: The vice president's only power is to break ties in congress and succeed the president should they be unable to perform the requred duties

FACT: The media's role and reason for there being a "freedom of he press" is to be able to inform the people of the government's actions which includes criticizing the government

FACT: Dick Cheney has overstepped his constitutional authority and should be prosecuted for it

  • Nancy, Nancy You and your party have just been HARDBALLED!!!!!! LOL

  • Gov. Palin is going to "get in there" and "also" make all the policies..teach the senators a lesson... blah blah blah

  • I loved it!!! I am sick an tired of this dumb bitch going on all these shows and never answering the questions asked. She only wants to give the talking points and NEVER answer the question being asked of her. That shit eating grin always on her face.

I know it is tough to defend Palin she is sooooo dumb!!! I use to respect Mccain but after if added Palin to his team, I have lost all respect!! Country first, my ass!! He is not thinking of the country at all by adding her!

    Nancy can

  • "He just can't accept the fact that someone can support McCain/ Palin."

Hey if you want to support them that's your choice.

We're just incredulous how can anyone support a candidate who DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE JOB IS.

  • It's hard for rational thinking people to believe that ANYONE can support Palin when she's supported AIP, she lies consistently, she abuses her power, she "palled around" with domestic terrorist Joe Vogler, she's unintelligent, has no experience, is anti-women's rights, has extreme religious beliefs, and can't control what happens in her own home. Her ratings went from the 80s to 56 in Alaska. They're catching on.

  • did you even LISTEN to what the issue they were discussing was?

  • What kind of a partisan pretzel does one have to tie oneself into not to see that they've got an absolute IDIOT on the Rebublican ticket?

Oh, yeah- Palin's pretty fucking stupid, too.

  • (The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided.)

So matthews is the idiot word for word out of Artile 1 Sec 3 if anyone wants to call me a liar.

  • "Artile 1"? OK Dr Constitution he was not quoting and his description of a TIE is accurate.

BTW the race is over and Palin's negatives are higher than Bush. She is awful (for the job) Pfotenhauer (current hubby #2 mortgage industry lobbyist and she was president of anti-feminism group).

I know Obama and Binden would know, former law professor and Biden also doctoral in law. Deal with the loss in a constructive way. All the best.

  • This is the funniest video I have ever seen. I saw this today. Look at the reaction of the pro Obama guy he is just laughing his ass off. You know why because the Mccain people just don't get it at all. Chris I realize he likes Obama any intelligent person would nut his anger here is just about a person who absolutely has no business running for VP. She doesn't even know the constitution. I would bet she coudln't even define Socialism if she tried.

  • Sarah Palin does not have enough experience. She isn't even very smart. She has only Journalism degree, that's took 5 transfers in 6 years from marginal schools to get one B.A. degree. What happened the last time we elected some dim whit as President? You see the damage now. Bush was the worst President in our history!

Haven't you learned yet. Check the frigging facts instead of just regurgitating the Fox News talking points.

  • Ignorance. Listen first of all experienced politicians are what got into this shape. We need someone who is knowledgeable. That is the problem here. We need someone who knows the Constitution. Someone who cares about uniting us in troubled times not dividing us on history 40 years old. That is why this republican party is out of touch and why Mathews who used to like Mccain is mad here. The republicans don't even care enough about us to run someone that is good for this country.

  • Not even dyed in the wool conservative pundits think palin is qualified. Her poll numbers show most people think she is a negative on the ticket MORE THAN BUSH!

Deal with the loss. I know anger is one of the stages of grief, but eventually even koolaid locksteppers will find acceptance, Nov 4. Suck it!

  • If this current presidency has shown us anything it's that in a situation where you can only pick experience or judgment, you pick judgment.

At first, I didn't like either presidential candidate. McCain has horrible, horrible judgment (just look at the people he has put around him and the campaign he has run) but he has experience. Obama lacks experience but his judgment has been good (again, just look at his campaign, the people he has put around him, and his VP pick).

  • The reason why I say you pick judgment here is because you take a step back now and look at Bush's administration. Very experienced individuals. Cheney has some 30+ years of experience in politics. What has damned America is not a lack of experience. It is a lack of judgment and the resulting inability to lead.

Obama has the judgment to put individuals around him that can deal with the economy. Obama has the judgment to put individuals that can deal with foreign issues around him.

  • He has the judgment to put individuals around him that will make up for his lack of experience.

Turn around now and look at McCain. He had the judgment to hire the very individuals that have skull fucked our nation. He had the judgment to select Palin. He had the judgment that has resulted in an out of touch and failed campaign.

I trust Obama's judgment way more than I trust McCain's experience because it's obvious McCain's experience is doing him very little good.

  • He has the judgment to put individuals around him that will make up for his lack of experience.

I trust Obama's judgment way more than I trust McCain's experience because it's obvious McCain's experience is doing him very little good.

  • Not only did he hire people like Rove, Schmit, Davis and Black, but these were the very same people that attacked him in the same manner in '00. I use to like McCain but he's too far to the right of himself for me now.

  • Judging from your post monarch you were one of the children left behind. It is doubt not dought, experience not exsperience and than not then. I hope you didn't pay for an education. Lastly try using spellcheck. Its only because of, to quote Bill-O the clown, PINHEADS like you that people think Americans are stupid.

  • She is sooooooooo dumb. I teach 11th graders who have learning disabilities and they know this already.
