I have heard quite a few good versions of this song but I still can't find one where the singer has a very haunting quality to their voice. I feel this song is a beautifully haunting song.
Rubbish. My Lagan Love" is a traditional Irish song from the 15th to 16th century found in Donegal. It was written during a time in Irish history when it was forbidden to write openly about Ireland, or express love, devotion, or nationalism towards the country. The Irish had decided to write songs that indirectly would reference their love for their mother country; they would refer to Ireland as a beautiful woman. Hence. She is singing about something she hasn't a clue about
Miss Church only has a harp accompanying her, not a production as Lynn Hilary...and she's 13 here....difficult to sing without the life experience or Mr. Holland to give it to you...Charlotte does just as well as any version, save maybe Kate Bush...
Well aside from Sinead (the least fav of the three mentioned) and you're funny feelings regarding her bald head, Dusty's and Kate's rule. If you haven't heard them, you may want to check both out on here. ;-)
I'm right with "ulstermourne," regarding the comment made. If you really want to hear a version that truly does "justice" to this song (along with Sinead O'Connor), type in the search section for Dusty Springfield and Kate Bush, along with the song title.
@BandBoxParade Well at least Sinead is a woman of Ireland and has passion and history to sing this beautiful song instead of our English Invaders singing it with no meaning..Charlotte Church me hole
Oh no oh no oh no!!!! her way of singing does NOT fit this song..it is too over decorated..ruins this song totally. No one will do it better than Sinead O'Connor.
@ulstermourne, you might be too stuck in your groove. In other words, you have heard this tune too often by someone else to appreciate a different style and artist.
okok this was pretty descent....so noone can do this song as well as kate bush.wich means either they have to raise it one step and can only go high....honestly if you only can do one face are you a good actor???
She doesn't use hardly any jaw vibrato on this song. I wonder if that was a bad habit that she picked up later in her career. Her pitch is also much more consistent on this song, unlike it is later in her career. There are a couple of places where she is throaty, but other than that, perfect for her young voice.
@cwfannumber1 Well of course it ain't right for her. Its about a young man singing about his sweetheart. (Gavin Henson please note). The best version I ever heard was by Fr. Sydney McKewan - but then he wasn't supposed to have a girlfriend either
@cwfannumber1 It is an Irish Song but nothing in the words gives any indication that it is anything but a lovesong. The poet is so in love that he feels like a lenashee - a weakling left by the faeries to replace the handsome baby the have stolen - nothing about Ireland except the location of the River Lagan
@flanncada Ok I'm replying to myself. Your comments actually inspired me to look at the two verses (there are at least 4) shown with the following quibbles. "No life I owe" should be "own". "She spares a bogwood fire" should be "tends". 'Leanan' does indeed mean 'lover' but this is "leanbh an sidhe" a fairy child replacing the one stolen by the faeries. Weak and sickly children were given this soubriquet in Ireland - see Yeats "Stolen Child" or "Seohin Seoho" by Clannad.
@BandBoxParade At the risk of being pedantic about it my comment was to dispel the notion that this is an 'Aisling'. The mistake could arise from the Wikipedia claim that in the 15th and 16th Centuries an Irish Bard would have to disguise his love of Ireland. In fact Gaelic culture was largely unfettered in those times to the chagrin of both Henry VII and VIII. However, a lovely song and beautufully sung
This is brilliant. I have listened to a number of versions now and Charlotte has it absolutely perfect. Soft, yet soulful, with such lyric engagement (the trilling of certain notes), and such perfection in the high notes. Nothing compares.
This song was a poem written by Poet Seosamh MacCathmaoil "aka" Joseph Campbell and aglicised to Joseph McCahill 1879-1944. The music was written by Arnold Bax 1883-1953 and Ivor Gurney 1883-1937.
The harps, the lighting, the calming tempo, and most of all that wonderful voice. This is my favorite renditions. She had a voice perfect for this song - young enough to have that child like tone and yet so talented that she could take on the scales and hit the high notes. Excellent!!!!
God bless her..she was given fame very young..and yet..she's a great ballsy woman ,who has a great voice AND a great sense of humour...She survived what most of "them" don't!
this really is one of the most stunning melodies ever written.
