This is bullshit. This is segregation and not a healthy solution. This is not the way a community brings about equality. Schools need to enforce acceptance of ALL differences sexuality included. I say we institute a no tolerance policy with bullying. Rather than removing gay students from schools and putting them in publicly funded segregated schools just kick out all the assholes. Let the bullies feel the impact of their behavior when they are held back and/or have to get their GED after 19.

they said the school was for at risk youth. i see no problems with publically funding schools that have programs catered to at risk youth. people do it all the time for at risk hispanic, black, what have you youth. as long as the kids there get their education and can learn in a supportive environment then what's the harm? socialization? it's not like they're in school 24/7 surrounded by other gay people 24/7. they have lives outside of school.

this news caster is a bit dumb. The school is not exclusive- you can be a straight kid and go there, the point is it was founded to give a safe environment free of homophobia.

Gay teens have an extra high suicide rate. Society is uncomfortable with them because they are young and gay. I came out at 15, and I'm just really lucky that I went to a great high school, but there the two other gay kids in my year both got beaten up in very big fights, and the administration did nothing in response.

As appealing as a gay high school may be (I grew up in the eighties, scared to death of being discovered for my orientation), I wonder if it might not be better to create very harsh, intractable punishments for ANY form of abuse or discrimination--preferably enacted in a way that all students know what is happening to the offenders and why. A deterrent against bullying may be preferable to segregation.

i agree segregation is not right, but for gay kids that would commit suicide (3x higher rate), and higher drop out rates. So for some kids, who are at risk, I think it is a good thing. But I think it would be nice is all gay students from the district could go to that schools dances and other social functions. Of course there are schools here that are the opposite of tolerant but nobody here speaks of seperate schools, weird. I think that when homoseksuality and the tolerance that comes with it is still such a big issue, the schools or the gouverment should be supporting awareness actions and using there power to protect gay students. But sending them to a seperate school is not the option.

My old school started a Gay Straight Alliance club. At my new school theres a similar club, called Project Tolerance. Beautiful thing really.
