This song has a view covers like Maxwell and Queen Latifah, and they are also good, but Mike Patton had a courage to do it copletely different. The otheres sound like a copy of masterpiece of Green. Patton's version IS a masterpiece itself.
Maxwell sings a different version every time he sings the song on tour. Mr. Patton did his own redemption and tribute to Al Green. I'd love to see different genres versions of this song but to say it's better than the original, well that would depend on the genre you love. Many will disagree whatever you say. But I think we can agree that this is a good contribution as well as a tribute to the particular passion of Al Green.
I love both versions of this songs. Al Green sings it very subtle and with a lot of feeling, Mike Patton very seducive instead. The instruments are also different.
I cannot say if the first one or second one is better. Both have great voices and show that you can interpret this song in different ways.
I'm pretty sure that there's not a studio version....although that would be nice...I seen them a few years back with the locust and trevor dunn trio convulsant and they played this, so I think it's pretty much a live staple for them.
Where does the tsar of the damned buy his grown up pants? Do they come with the hairy grown man balls sown in already or does he have to provide for that himself?
Patton is fantastic. If you don't like him that is your choice and some of us Patton-heads can respect that, myself included but please don't base your opinion off one video...
This is Fantomas. Comparisons are not warranted. This is why they are only known by a select group of music fans. It is not for everyone (fortunately or unfortunately?).
Dude. Lol? Jim Morrison? Danzig wtf? Neil Diamond might be able to hit those kind of notes but wtf? Rock and roll is not about voice quality and you are making no sense. Jim Morrison is the EPITOME of rock and roll requiring ZERO talent from a singer. Why am I even arguing with this high schooler/uneducated schlob/redneck/simpleton? I dunno. I'm drunk but goddamn, the simple fact of the matter is PATTON HAS extraordinary range.
Holy crap you have to be an idiot or just culturally out of tune (either from 5 generations past or just completely modern ignoramus) to realize that Patton has one of the TOP vocal ranges of, in the very least, 'rock' singers. Aside from the fact he writes, performs and plays most of own music. God save yourself.
Wierd...yet...brilliant...but...wierd. Never heard these guys before but this is pretty cool. whod've thought, i was just foolin around with words and this band shows up. Interesting indeed.
yea fantomas are deifately...different but you will find that they make some good music. look up other band Mike Patton has been in too. he is my favorite of all time
really good fucking brilliant thats what ive come to expect from Patton with any of the bands hes been in. wolfmother do suck its 2007 music needs to change not go back in time.
Mike hs definitely chilled out over the years, I've heard he and Fantomas get along really well. I guess it's just the choice of people. Also, JR, so you're saying that since you didn't like the live show you don't like the band? Sounds like you're a happy bandwagonner yourself.
He doesn't think he is better than anyone...this is obviously a dude that has never watched/read a Patton interview and seen how laid back and nice he is...Wolfmother sucks. You should stop making ignorant assumptions about artists you dont really know about...its just embarrasing to all of us.
what's dissapointing is that wolfmother didn't mix any other style of music to their copied sound. The White Stripes get their sound from mixing different styles of music. As for Patton, mixes styles as well as comes up with his own. For gods sake if your gonna copy a style of music exactly and not mix it, just do a cover song of that band. Wolfmother is just playing a style of music that hasn't been heard among teenagers in a long time because it is not from their time.
Thanks for your reply. No, it has none of the power of Bungle's debut. And, hence, reflects badly on Kiedis's plagiarism claims. Also, as brilliant as Blood Sugar is, it is easily outshone by Angel Dust. Case in point, watch the Midlife Crisis video again, here on youtube next to Give It Away. And to recognise the up and comers, too. Check out "The Presets" - "Are You The One". Yours?
These guys are awesome. He doesn't quite hit the soulfulness of Al Green's version, but I'll forgive him since it's Mike Patton and since I don't think they were really taking it seriously.
seeing them do this live is the most amazing vocal performance i've EVER seen. Mike Patton's vocals are so loud and they just wrap you up in this ridiculous r&b blanket of santuary. God it was amazing. As good as bad sex.
Well, the person who said they ruined the song doesn't appreciate Fantomas' style and probably never will, but it shows how Patton is one of the most versatile vocalists alive.
RHCP used to be great when they did stuff with george clinton and throughout all their early years and some of their latter. i don't ususally comment on these things as people have ridiculous arguments but i saw all the rhcp comments and thought i'd give my opinion. i just think they've become really radio friendly "dad-rock" now. if your into them then check out their older albums.
No mate, RHCP have always been shown up as the light weights they are by Mike Patton and whatever company he assembles. Frusciante knows how to write music, that is about the best you can say for them.
Yeah, I love most things mike patton does and the chilis are pretty ridiculous but don't you think their really old stuff (like freaky styley etc) is decent??

That song's pretty cool. I'm pretty out of touch with new stuff i think because everything i discover or whatever turns out to be pretty old. i've been listening to a lot of blind melon though. you should check them out if you don't already know them. i won't specify a song because they're all brilliant!

Finally a guy with some sense. You don't have to take sides just because these musicians do. I personally thing they're both great musicians. So what they don't get along? Think for yourself.
I agree as well. More sensical people need to get on these boards as they get quite uncivilized at times. Why can't people just get-over-it? Music is for enjoyment, not for scrutinization. Well, not al

They did a great job covering this song. Buzz's guitar work starting at 1:26 is a very nice touch.
^^Also, I don't like Anthony Kiedis, but it has nothing to do with Mike Patton. I just think he's a bad vocalist. Ever seen RHCP live? How about the fact that he's "sang" the same fake nonsense rap for the last seven years? A song that doesn't base its entire rhyme scheme on the suffix "-ation" would be a step in the right direction.
