Technically, this isn't considered an *official* "50 in 50", as the NHL defines it as scoring 50 goals in your TEAM's first 50 games of the season. Neely was injured for much of the year, so his 44th game of that season was somewhere around the 65th to 70th for the Bruins. It's a shame, though, because I do feel Neely should get official credit for that, especially for the backhand goal against Ottawa and that AMAZING goal against Quebec.

Neely is, in my opinion, perhaps the most underrated NHL player of the last 30 years (although you could make a damn good case for Mike Bossy, too). Amazing talent, and he wasn't afraid to drop the gloves and hammer you. A true hockey player.

People might say that's a technicality but the truth is durability plays a role in being able to do it. Richard did it when there were only 50 games in a season, so he couldn't afford to miss any games, and also why, to qualify, it must be done in the first 50 games.

Despite the fact that I'm a Penguins fan, I am a HUGE fan of Cam Neely. He's my favorite Winger in history. Loved his rough style. Though he had a temper and a mean streak, Cam is regarded as one of the best hockey players in my opinion. He DESERVED a Stanley Cup. Gordie Howe was an even better power forward than he was... but the closest we came to getting another Howe since him was Neely.

He had to take an unreal amount of punishment in front of the net. Cam did have soft hands and playmaking skills but he rarely was able to show it because his job dictated him to be the finisher.

@mornay77 the Bruins made the finals in 88 and 90 only to lose to the dynastic Oilers both times and I always felt they essentially had 2 players on those teams, Bourque and Neely, that's it, couple other ok ones like Janney, Wesley, Linseman but nothing special. In other words, Bourque and Neely were arguably as good as anyone in the league at that time who wasn't named Wayne or Mario and if it wasn't for those 2 guys, Bourque and a heathy Neely could have had a couple MVPs each.

Oh man, that brings back memories. I was in the Garden with my Dad when Neely popped 49 and 50 against the Caps. 15 years old at the time, and I can't believe it was 15 years ago. Nothing beat going to the old Garden and watching Cam in heyday.

One other thing. People here seem to think that he got hurt after this year. You're wrong...Ulf's hit on Neely occurred in 1991 in the playoffs. Cam put up these numbers essentially on one leg.

For a big man of 6'1" and 220 pounds, Neely was fast and agile, unlike punks like Rick Tocchet and Keith Tkachuk. And he could score. Craig Janney was an awesome set up man for Neely in the late 80's early 90's but I really think it was Adam Oates who really helped Neely light it up, so to speak. Oates helped Brett Hull get that 86 goals in 90-91 and its almost impossible to ignore how many Neely would have scored in 93-94 had he played every one of the 84 games.

Neely scored 50 goals in 44 games in a DEFENSIVE ERA, imagine how many he would have scored in the offensive 80's. He maybe would have scored 50 goals in 30 games on a good team (say the 82-83 or 83-84 Bruins). Too bad his prime years were in the late 80's and early 90's. Like jbobbster said, the key words are "would have". We'll never know for sure how many he could have scored in 93-94 but its very scary to even imagine it. I would say very close to or more than 100, breaking Gretzky's record.
