Apparently this was Fassbinder's quickest-made and cheapest movie, made in only 15 days, but was his most successful or the most lauded. I can see why! This scene is so cute! :)
It may seem like an overstatement today, but this was truly an amazing film in post war germany, where racism was rampant. Not, that it has gone away, quite the contrary, but Fassbinder was able to capture the human element, the longing for love and acceptance. It's a difficult film to watch, because the ending is not happy.
The most brilliant thing about this scene is the opening shot and the final twisting pan away from them.
The camera is at standing-eye level during the he opening shot. (Important are the standing swine spectators.) But then, for the end of the scene, the camera is a sitting-eye level. It's almost like, through the process of eavesdropping, the viewer has taken a seat amongst the rare non-racists in the world.
The message being that racists have no place at the table of civilization.
i like foreigner movies alot and this scene is interesting, the dialogue keeps you watching, never knowing what there going to say next. i like to see the entire thing and not jus a scene, because something taken out of context doesnt make much sense.
@iiNDiTC The entire film is very much worth watching, and yes, I agree...this scene is is not entirely representative of the entire film. It is far more complicated than this...
going by the clip, its well acted and written but didactic, studied - but still seems serious and good. somehow emotionally and socially convincing yet also stiff. i know of fassbinder but am not so familiar. well so is do the right thing well acted +written but didactic+studied - but "do the right thing" is also very visual, riveting and powerful. this is more restrained, subdued and low-key - like the film doesnt want to make itself too dramatic. i still want to see it.

I'd love to see some other scenes from this film posted, particularly when they dance in the bar.
