The parts all moves downward in an A minor scale until they reach the bottom note. Which they hold till the end of the piece. After analyzing the score, I can say that this piece would be incredibly hard play. One would need incredible focus to hold notes that long.
You're right, Nick, it's A minor. My ear was off the evening I wrote that. So an A minor scale repeated over and over again is great music? BTW, I have performed a reasonable amount of Britten, including his (very great) violin concerto. Much better music than this.
@soljenitsyne77 Do you belive that great music has to be difficult and complex? What's complex for you? If you analyze Arvo Part's scores you would be amazed of how much work there's in his music, even though it sounds "simple". Music is more than scales and chords. Just feel how this masterpiece draws you into your own soul only with an A scale.
@soljenitsyne77 What about the bass moving diatonically in stepwise motion? It's 'New Simplicity' we're talking about, it's just a ringing bell (Tintinnabuli).
@soljenitsyne77 you miss the whole point, you should look at it as the A MINOR scale,is the theme, see it as a bach fugue motif, it is a scale going down is irrelevant, as mindlessness its evrething but that, look at the score, if you wait for tona devloppement, conter subject and other mecanical device to expand the theme you miss the whole thing, , and it is really complex indeed, just my point of view take it or leave it, but try writting something that great have you written anything?
I am not a fan of classical music... however i walked in on my dad listening to this and i immediately loved it, I have always had very eclectic tastes and have even been to the proms a couple of times... just to please the parents!.. but this makes be want to go to the proms again!
This is such a beautiful piece. I was at this concert, and it was definitely one of the best concerts of my life (along with the Gergiev Mahler 4th and 5th symphonies prom ealier this proms season). I know it is a lot to ask, but please may you upload the Britten and Shostakovich from this concert as well? I would be so grateful.... :)
At end its tearin´ me inside ... So powerful.

Thank you audience, for waiting for the last note to die, instead of drowning it prematurely. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

A descending B minor scale, repeated over and over again. Big deal. New Age mindlessness.

Nicely done.. I'd prefer it if they didn't use a conductor tho.
