Cool---I've always loved this song---first I ever heard by them back in 1995---finally got the CD the other day just before I left a record store---the funny thing is, I wasn't even looking for it, and spotted it by accident while bending down to get a stool! Their sound,to me, has always been reminescent of the famous 1960's organ jazz player Jimmy Smith, whom I grew up listening to courtesy of my aunt. Saw them live at the Ford Jazz Festival in Detroit 2 years ago---they didn't play this tune.
i have utter respect for medeski's achievement of playing exactly what he wants but always wonder if he's addicted to distortion the way i am, say, to bread
I saw them back in 2002, and the were intastella!!! they did a version of FIRE by Jimi Hendrix , that i only recognised 10 mins into the tune....and im a big Hendrix fan!!! love MM + W
Billy seems sloppy here, go back and listen to the record - his playing is about 10x better.. this needs a more machine precision, imo.. the beat is relentless on the album..
If there is a nationally known band with a better rhythm section, I really want to know about it...until that day happens, I declare Wood and Martin the best bass/drummer combo going in 2010.
I saw them a few nights ago. I literally could not believe my ears. It was so amazingly good. I think Billy Martin is probably the most talented drummer I've ever seen live. He played a four piece kit, and ONE cymbal, which was so refreshing. He also broke out a tamborine, and absolutely killed on it. I've never heard anyone play a tamborine like that!
i know what you're talking about on the tambourine. i saw them live in september and my jaw dropped when he went to the tambourine when they played "amber gris".
MMW have their own sound, but these bands are kinda funky jazz too: Robert Walter's Super Heavy Organ, John Scofield, Charlie Hunter, ULU, The Bad Plus, Garaj Mahal (and The Fareed Haque Group. Theres a lot more hit me up and I'll drop some more names, I just hate typing
my band future dog is heavily inspired by these guys, similar grooves and instrumentation, but a bit more electronics. check out the vids on my channel!
MMW are unique, but try: Garage a Trois Emphasizer + Outre Mer Soulive Turn it out Robert Walter Super Heavy Organ Stanton Moore III + Emphasis! (On Parenthesis) Zony Mash Brand Spankin New + Live in Seattle Galactic Coolin Off + Crazy Mongoose Skeriks Syncopated Taint Septet Husky Will Bernard Blue Plate Special + Party Hats Orgone Killion Floor The Bad Plus The Bad Plus T.J. Kirk If Four Was One + Talking Only Makes It Worse Charlie Hunter Mistico
Oh, I completely agree... Billy is the freakin' amazing! But in this video (and a few others where he has his facial hair like this) he looks like one of the cavemen to me.
Ciao dall'Italia! Ho trovato questo video molto interessante! Io faccio il compositore ed autore musicale e questa musica mi ha fascinato! Complimenti!
What's great about these videos is that you get to see up close the way these fab musicians play... exceptional ! I just wish they'd come to Paris more often...
what song are they going into when the video cuts out?
