Just as a random comment, there were also nuns who prepared manuscripts. They were a good deal less common than the monks, but it wasn't unknown. The thing about women being uneducated wasn't universally true; upper class women were often at least basically literate and able to work basic mathematics (for account keeping), and women of the church, particularly the high ranking ones, were often educated, as well, but of course, you don't have to be literate to draw or paint or illuminate.
@ClassicalBookworm Well, a. had to rhyme with saint, b) researched that liquid gold, gold pigment, and shell gold were some of the earliest forms of gilding..gold leaf was considered supreme.
0:18 Echternach Gospels, 0:22 Lindisfarne Gospels, 0:35 Book of Kells, 0:48 Unknown to me (Merovingian?), 0:52 Book of Kells, 1:12 Book of Kells, 1:19 Book of Durrow, 1:27 Stockholm Codex Aureus, 2:00 Unknown to me (Gothic era), 2:03 Book of Kells, 2:18 Unknown to me (Merovingian?, same page as at 0:48), 2:29 Book of Kells.
@dsmdgold WOW! You must have watched the video a hundred times! Kudos! Well done! Take a bow! I wonder if Mr H might illuminate us as to how many of them you got right? (They all look good to me, but I am no expert.)
Well Done! By coincidence, I'm remotely controlling PC's to do backups. Sometimes, the "windows" take a long time to draw. I commented to a fellow worker, "It's like watching a monk draw illustrations with a colored pencil!" And you come up with this! Thanks!

Gold paint? Er, no. Gold leaf. And silver, though that tarnishes to black pretty quickly. Gold paint is for kindergarden. ;)

@historyteachers Ah, I see. I suppose "leaf" could rhyme with "belief"? ;) Well, let's just call it artistic license. :)
