Unemployment benefits typically go right back into the economy in the form of paying rents or mortgages, bills, buying food, etc.; so that's another reason the government isn't to keen on cutting it off just yet.
I'm unemployed, got laid off, and I'm trying to find a job, because right now I don't have health insurance. (COBRA is too expensive for me, even with the govt. reduction)
Not only are there 6 applicants for every job opening, but in my field of work it would be considered lucky to find one opening!
Not to mention UI can barely cover the monthly expenses, and that's only because I don't have a family to support.

Stimulus package passed by Obama was nothing more then "growing the boat". It included every type of pork you can imagine for embattled Democrats. It stimulated nothing and created 0 jobs. But yeah Tom Delay is heartless.
Not according to practically ever reputable economist, including the conservative Wall Street Journal, and the non partisan Congressional Budget Office, who all say the stimulus saved somewhere around 1.6 million jobs. That's 1,600,000 jobs. That's 1.6 million people who didn't have to go on unemployment, didn't have to lose their health insurance, didn't default on their mortgages etc.
People are unemployed because they want to be, its the truth and people in the real world know it? No, people are unemployed because of a bad economy brought on by Delay's policies, he is lying and everybody outside of Washington D.C. knows it.

If you want to argue that unemployment isn't regulated enough, that would be a great provision in the jobs bill. More bureaucratic jobs for the regulation and fact checking of unemployment extensions, applications, etc.

I know EXACTLY what that means. Even while I was IN college getting my BS in computer science, CompUSA would not hire me. I have a great work history, and obviously I was qualified for the job, but the guy thought he would have to pay me too much.

I lost my job in July 09, and was making about 1000 dollars a week. I have a wife and 2 kids. I didn't even file for UE until October because all I wanted to do was work and make what I was making or at least close. I receive 430 dollars a week. So am I supposed to go flip burgers for minimum wage, which wouldn't even net 430 a week or keep searching as I do. You think I wouldn't prefer 1000 a week again...I would take less than 1000, but still I should be paid more than the 430???

People with unemployment generally don't try to find a job until about two or three weeks before their unemployment runs out... why is that an outrageous statement... IT ISN'T... it's proly WORSE than that.

I'm kind of unbalanced when it comes to unemployment. I live in a highly unemployed area. There are a lot of people who have lost their jobs, and are ashamed that they've had to reduce themselves to unemployment or public aid.
On the other hand - I've seen people on unemployment, fit as a fiddle, capable of going out to find work - and they see it as more of a vacation then a responsibility.
Obviously not everyone who is unemployed wants to be and I don't think Delay was trying to say that they are but I personally know of people who stay on unemployment because they get more money through unemployment than they would if they were working at a job they previously had. It's not as rare as you make it seem Cenk.
I was layed of for 8 months a few years ago. There is no way you get more money being unemployed than you did when you were employed. The state knows what you were making and you get less than half of that. I made in 2 weeks what I was making in a week.
That may be what is supposed to happen but I guarantee you that my second cousin's husband (no idea what that would be to me) here in SC is getting paid more to sit around the house and hunt every day than he was when he was working. Is it enough for them to live off of solely? I don't know because his wife works while he does nothing. It does happen and I've seen it for myself.
That's why there are time restrictions on how long one can collect unemployment. More to the point, if you are unhappy about how some people abuse the system and you happen to know someone that it doing just that, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT PERSON! Arguing to deny benefits to everyone is a coward's way of avoiding confrontation. If we all knew a mooch and spoke up directly to that person, there would be a whole lot less mooching. That's called community action,organization, and responsibility.

The problem finding a job is that everyone else is unemployed too and your vying for a job against 30-40 other people. Thankfully I keep getting interviews so my spirits are still high, but God damn this son of a bitch. He has no f@#$ing clue what americans are going through.

Not according to practically ever reputable economist, including the conservative Wall Street Journal, and the non partisan Congressional Budget Office, who all say the stimulus saved somewhere around 1.6 million jobs. That's 1,600,000 jobs. That's 1.6 million people who didn't have to go on unemployment, didn't have to lose their health insurance, didn't default on their mortgages etc.

Unemployment benefits are regulated, so not many people can get away with that....
If you want to argue that unemployment isn't regulated enough, that would be a great provision in the jobs bill. More bureaucratic jobs for the regulation and fact checking of unemployment extensions, applications, etc.
It will create jobs, and increase fiscal responsibility by weeding out those who do milk the system.

My best friend, a married father of 3, lost his job in August and has found nothing! He's depressed and feels bad because he HAS to, not GETS to, be on unemployment. What an asshole!

I know EXACTLY what that means. Even while I was IN college getting my BS in computer science, CompUSA would not hire me. I have a great work history, and obviously I was qualified for the job, but the guy thought he would have to pay me too much.
It's an odd thing to think that a college degree can keep someone from finding a quick job to make it by in a pinch, but it's true.

I lost my job in July 09, and was making about 1000 dollars a week. I have a wife and 2 kids. I didn't even file for UE until October because all I wanted to do was work and make what I was making or at least close. I receive 430 dollars a week. So am I supposed to go flip burgers for minimum wage, which wouldn't even net 430 a week or keep searching as I do. You think I wouldn't prefer 1000 a week again...I would take less than 1000, but still I should be paid more than the 430???

I had to job hunt form the time I got up in the morning many times before dawn till I went to sleep after midnight just to generate any sort of leads for interviews. And, if you subtract the cost of transportation and most often expensive food when you work from your original salary, you get close to 80% anyway. I am saying that the opposition is doing it, and the only way to counter is to do the same. So there should be some method of directing popular discontent at the other faction. But the tricky part is not to cultivate further discontent. Removing discontent is possible, but very difficult.
So the most effective course of action is to turn the opposition into an "other," which your side can oppose. But if the atmosphere allows it, one should try and simply lessen discontent, but that is hard.

I think Delay is playing the "helpless victim" card, like so many Republicans are right now.
I'm kind of unbalanced when it comes to unemployment. I live in a highly unemployed area. There are a lot of people who have lost their jobs, and are ashamed that they've had to reduce themselves to unemployment or public aid.
On the other hand - I've seen people on unemployment, fit as a fiddle, capable of going out to find work - and they see it as more of a vacation then a responsibility.

Obviously not everyone who is unemployed wants to be and I don't think Delay was trying to say that they are but I personally know of people who stay on unemployment because they get more money through unemployment than they would if they were working at a job they previously had. It's not as rare as you make it seem Cenk.

I was layed of for 8 months a few years ago. There is no way you get more money being unemployed than you did when you were employed. The state knows what you were making and you get less than half of that. I made in 2 weeks what I was making in a week.

That may be what is supposed to happen but I guarantee you that my second cousin's husband (no idea what that would be to me) here in SC is getting paid more to sit around the house and hunt every day than he was when he was working. Is it enough for them to live off of solely? I don't know because his wife works while he does nothing. It does happen and I've seen it for myself.

That's why there are time restrictions on how long one can collect unemployment. More to the point, if you are unhappy about how some people abuse the system and you happen to know someone that it doing just that, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT PERSON! Arguing to deny benefits to everyone is a coward's way of avoiding confrontation. If we all knew a mooch and spoke up directly to that person, there would be a whole lot less mooching. That's called community action,organization, and responsibility.

Many people have spoken to him; just as many people speak out about others abusing the system. The true cowardice is the individuals who sit on their butts instead of getting a job and those who avidly support them. There are people who need help but there are also many people who feel like they are too good for available jobs and people who are simply lazy.
