Roger Ebert wrote a wonderful book called "I Hated, Hated, HATED This Movie", and this is like watching the movie of that book. Thanks for posting these wonderful videos!
@mviemkermick it's kinda tough to believe he got away with that, considering this was a Disney-owned show syndicated in large part to public tv stations. Maybe it was just too subtle.
What most people fail to realize is that these are only opinions of two people. Just because they don't like a movie, or just because they like a movie, doesn't mean the movie is good or bad. I laughed at Freddy Got Fingered, but according to Ebert and Roeper, it was garbage.
I actually saw the Mothman Prophecies. I certainly remember the bridge collapsing. It was supposed to be based on the collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967. 46 people died, not 36.
"Anne Heche upstaged everyone in the film especially the fisherman. Nobody will every notice that fishing hat in a fishing town, well maybe they will in July." Classic!!
I actually read the Mothman Prophecies. I've never met another human being who has done so. Needless to say, I was really surprised when I learned a movie was being made based on the book by John Keel.
I would recommend the book. It's fun as long as one remembers it's all hokum, regardless of what Keel wants us to think.
What Ebert said ("It's got a lot of action and tech expertise and I guess it sort of holds your attention while it's happening") re: action sequences applies EXACTLY to the CGI crap that has destroyed movies today.
"The characters are simply puppets to provide an excuse" for the "golly gee whiz lookit what we can do!" for today's CGI lack-of-talent.
I have to say, you've captured some of the best interplay between Siskel and Ebert (especially in the last 30 seconds of this clip). Even when they disagreed they had such fun with it, and enjoyed each others reviews.
I know they keep trying to match critics on "wannabee" shows, but no one has ever matched the fun chemistry between Siskel & Ebert.
Can't get over the Cop and a Half thing. I think Cop and a Half was trashed by every single critic in the US, except Roger, and Gene never forgot that.
OMG I guess Roger's critical faculties became faulty earlier than I thought. But he is a fun critic, he just likes way too much trash. Like Roeper says, he's waay too kind.
"Remember Cop and a Half?", hahahahahaha, Broken Arrow was in 96, Cop and a Half in 93. Gene had that in mind for 3 years, hahahahahaha. That was truly a milestone for him.
The Broken Arrow review is a classic. Oddly enough, I liked the film.
