mine did the same thing, until it warmed up when it cleared out, i changed the valve cover gaskets and that fixed it for a while than it started again, this time the high pressure oil pump went out, 7.3 powerstoke injectors run on oil pressure not fuel pressure, it need at least 750 psi oil pressure to fire the injectors normal op pressure is around 2400 to 3000 psi, fuel pressure is only 35 to 50 psi
Remove any so-called tuning devices as they often cause this sort of damage to injectors, fuel rail and fuel pumps. If you have used such a thing then that is the answer. Also put a proper paper element in the original air filter housing to ensure you are giving the engine clean cold air! The original air filter is oversized so provides more air than the engine uses at full RPM. Never trust fault codes, you still need to know how an engine works as it might point at a condition and not a part
the 7.3s have a fuel pump on the frame rail about under the drivers door theres nothing but a pickup and fliter in the fuel tank, that pump supplies 50 psi fuel pressure to the heads and the rest of the motor, a big probelm on the 7.3s is that the injector harness in bulit into valve cover gasket and is know for going bad another big problem for years is if the filter in the tank clogs up you have no power off idle. im a ford certified diesel mechanic
Did you ever get your problem fixed? I have a 95 7.3 that is doing that exact same thing. I am trying to narrow down exactly what it is that is wrong.
@orbitofdoom16 never had a fuel pump? your right about the hpop supplying pressure to the injector. but um theres fuel getting from the tank to the injector as well...
@fordpowerf450 It may be called a fuel pump, but it does none of the work, and is only used when you run your tank dry. I have, many times, ran a 97 F250, without the mechanical pump in the tank. As long as your fuel system doesnt leak, or isnt sucking air, you arnt using that pump in a HPOP 7.3
@orbitofdoom16 yeah because there is a lift pump sitting in the valley of the engine... in a hpop 7.3??? there all ran off high pressure oil dont really get wat you mean there. and yeah you still need the fuel pump. or lift pump whatever you wanna call it.
@orbitofdoom16 you dumb fuck old 7.3s like this dont have a lift pump, or any pump in the tank all thay have is a pickup tube located in the tank. the only fuel pump you will have is the one located in the engine valley called a (tandem fuel pump) it sucks fuel from the tank and pressurizes it to about 45-50 psi and pumps it into the heads.
@deanbill He probably means the UVCH connectors not spark plugs....

CountryGirl4189 1 year ago
Mine did the same thing and it turned out to be the the connection in the wiring harness that goes to the injectors was burned up and shorted out.

i had the same problem and there was a connector that was burnt on the inside of of my right valve cover. Now it runs great again.

i had a similar problem and it was a wire under my air box that was burnt

I just figured out my problem there was a connector that was burnt on the inside of of my left valve cover. Now it runs great again.

yeah mine did that. PITA UVCH on the drivers side thank god.

PWRSTR0KER2008 2 years ago
@PWRSTR0KER2008 High pressure oil pump, I should have said it doesnt have a stand alone, only functions as a fuel pump, fuel pump
