The orchestral version is much better (but mostly because I'm in orchestra and I've played this), but thanks for sharing this. It was quite interesting to see.
I think that in the last half of the 20th century people were beginning to get a little bored with all the old string music.
Remember people got tired of the old Baroque music and all those C and F clefs.
I am however a big fan of how Rossini and Wagner used strings. Since early 1900's the newer composers understood how boring the old string stuff was and gave us the 'new mix' for enjoyment.
I too am not particularly< a big Symphony orchestra fan.
The "storm" was way to slow and very boring. The english horn was far to bright. Good work flute, but I was very hard to hear you. Feel that might be the faught of the seating arrangment.

You really can't "arrange" such a well-written piece like this for a stringless ensemble. The piece as a whole is far too brash with this group.

quality of record ruins it totally.
there almost none low tones, and whole thing sounds extremely unbalanced.
