The hard drive freezer thing works great as a last resort when your drive isn't firing up properly and nothing else works and you don't want to spend $3k on a professional data recovery firm! It usually lasts long enough to copy the data off to somewhere safe before putting the faulty drive in the bin.

Yeah,its a common trick to use if your disk won't boot and you need to get data off it.I work in IT and we have had to do it a bunch of times.
