  • my favourite try of all time - I was on my feet in front of the tv cheering this one in aged 13 ...love the sight of FOUR Scots floored as Bennett reaches the try line

  • To think that he might only have been the fourth best player of Wales' golden era...quite incredible.

  • @baboon2525 Edwards, John, JPR, Gerald Davies, Mervyn Davies, Bennett, Graham Price....i'm not even sure he was top 4

  • Benny, the best ever.

  • Where's the rest of it? There was some good rugby leading up to this.

  • 0:06 - Forward pass....

  • Great to hear the magnificent Bill McLaren, who had no equal when it came to commentating on rygby. You are much missed Mr.M.

  • Phil Bennett was the man.

  • @newtzdogg That he was/still is.

  • 0:08 a friend of mine says is forward pass.. what do u think?

  • @ElliotJackRussel I think your friend may be mistaken.

  • @twlthteg think its the angle of the camera..

  • @ElliotJackRussel Wouldn't be the first time. But it's Phil Bennett for Gods sake!! Hehe!

  • 70s magic.Happiest period in British history. Then Thatcher and capatilism came in.

  • @gmaccruyff55 Aye, let's forget about that, I'm a Gers fan and luckily the people I meet there remember, though some cunts (few, honestly) seem to pass anything the Sassenachs do, that's nae bad in general, but when it comes tae Maggie... well... I mean, luckily Glesga's still a working class city and all of us do remember...

  • i think we may have to look at reducing the number of players on the rugby field. due to physical improvements in pro players, there is only a fraction of the space available that there used to be.

amateur 15s rugby has more in common with modern 7s than modern 15s. 15s would probably have to move down to 13-a-side, or even 11, to recreate the kind of game amateur 15s was.

  • @UserOfCommonSense ...making the field wider might be less controversial.

  • @Hannahcannae im not sure that is practical. there isnt really that much space left on the side of the field in most grounds, especially for teams that play in soccer stadiums.

but yes, if there is room in the stadium it would be less controversial to make the pitch bigger.

  • Superb back play of the very very highest order, sidesteps and a hand-off for starters by Davies, great backing up by Fenwick and his inside pass to Bennett was superb knowing full well he was going to take a hit as soon as he released it. There were no forward passes in the passage of play (clearly line ball by Bircher to Fenwick), given the backward facing hand position when ball released even if on the field by the lines it looked a tad forward the momentum rule would come into play anyway.

  • Its a very unfashionable thing to say but Phil Bennett was the best ever Welsh fly half, even better than john. He might be one of the best ever, anywhere. He tore the `74 Springboks apart.

  • @chanctonbury63 Phil Bennett was superb, yes. The top 3 outside halves in my time are Barry John, Mark Ella and Dan Carter. Cliff Morgan was an earlier Welsh great who should be remembered.

  • Lol..... look at 0:13 there are 4 men down...

  • the classic amazing try... but gotta hand it for the scots, great determination for the scramble defense!

  • forward pass much at 0:11!!!!

  • Best try ever, and i'm Scottish.. And Murrayfield actually had an atmosphere then !

  • @ItsGrimUpNorth7 They got 100,000 in there more than once!

  • davis' sidestep...thats what dreams are made of! and i'm english!

  • Greatest try of all time.

  • Back before rugby Union was reduced to a 15 man version of League.

  • Great try, even though Bennett's pass to Bircher was forward - not that I'm a Scot, you understand ... ;-p

  • Still one of the most beautiful tries ever scored, from the team of scintillating legends

  • as seen on Twin Town!!!

  • I've seen all videos claiming to be the best try ever, but this is it. Phil Bennet hell of a player!

  • Great quick hands at 0:11

  • btw people this is what bryn cartright was talking about on twintown and i fucking luvdz it XD

  • Magnifique !

  • if only rugby was like that but now its all slow and stuff

  • see the steps on gerald davies

  • just play that again around 0:03 when Steve Fenwick takes the overarm pass and ships to Bennett in one move - right as he gets hit. Unbelievable. Great move and great finish, but that split second made the try and is pure magic.

  • Thats My Gramps Couzon

  • phil bennett=magician

  • Brilliant try, brilliant commentator.

  • lovely step by bennett at the end

  • RIP Bill from an Englishman.

  • Classic Bill McClaren commentary; beautifully complimenting the action. RIP my son of Hawick.

  • tom, you're right it always amazes me that Fenwick manages to get the ball away - class!!

  • agreed! i think it really is a fitting testiment to a great team, and some of the best rugby i have ever seen.

  • the hand-off at 0:03 is epic

  • no doubt!

  • lol look how many scots end up on the floor! amazing try, good step at the end and the oflads are great

  • the offload from Fenwick at 0:11 is the fastest ive ever seen

  • Agreed, its insane

  • @tomhowes99 faster than anything i've ever seen to. class

  • one pass looked slightly forward i mean if uwatch the line of running hes almost ahead of the ball carrier..stil that was an absolutly unreal move..they were some players!! Wales at their best

  • OH NO! the video stopped before he put the ball down.....did he make it all right *end of sarcasm* great try though

  • Im a scotland fan and that was fucking awesome

  • at o:13 he made them crash together. OWNED

  • i didnt see any try

  • Am i the only one who thinks that there is one pass going clearly forward?

  • no.....but by using the half-way line as a reference, I think it's too close to call.

  • 1st international match I was at. Scotland 9-3 up at one point-Ian McGeecahn scored drop goal early on. Wales magic tho. Some Welsh tool shouted at me to put my flag down tho - Mind you, Scotland were winning at that point

    Sosban Fach

  • David Burcher was an oddity. Played throughout the 1977 championship season, went on the Lions tour same year and never played for Wales again !

  • ahhhhhh best try EVER

  • If there is a heaven and I believe there is I just hope and prey it looks soemthing like this ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh benny

  • Can anybody please tell me the name of the commentator?

I think he's the best commentator I've ever heard in English on any sport!

  • Bill Mclaren (Scotland)....definitely best and most unbiased

  • Scotland 9-18 Wales..........what a beauty to see them like this !

  • brilliant

    absolutely brilliant!

  • My Dad told me Wales used to be awesome and now i see why, i wish you guys could get this good again, good to see you get the grand slam, it's a start

  • not sure bout dat pass maybe it wer straight maybe not undecided

WALES RULE WE GUNA TAKE DA SIX NATIONS YERRR

  • :10...quickest pass ever in the history of the planet.

  • Excelent, brillant !!!!

  • All those sidesteps and then Steve Fenwick's pass!

  • back when we were legends.

  • a masterclass from the welsh! i love it!

  • Doesnt get any better than that.

  • shame there was a forward pass...

  • it was straight...

  • it was forward, the lines on the pitch make it clear, but heh, it's still a great try

  • We'll I've been relentlessly pausing and rewinding, and its very difficult to call, at the momment of release it seems straight enough, but by the time its in his hands there does seem to be a case...

  • It's very obvious it's forward.

But I don't care, what a fantastic try!

  • phil bennetts step at the end is just amazin!! what a legend!! and such a nice bloke to talk 2!1

  • Pure class.

  • Speaking as a Scotsman, that was a lovely try.

  • Awesome side steps from Bennett, him and Gerald Davies were the best ever at it

  • That is The welsh team and needs to be tought ( some sidesteps were unbelievable)!!

  • PB - Legend.

  • That was SOME try!
