I think Bioware meant for each of those games to be the way they are with the first showing how Commander Shepard gets so deeply involved into the whole Reaper conflict in the first place. The second game being meant to give the player more entrenched feelings for the characters of the ME universe and the value of life and loss. Lastly the final game in the trilogy being the EPIC final act, the trailers all emphasize the value of life, alluding to ME2.

@Darthlinebacker I agree with you on many points. Though I in fact felt like ME2 was better for certain reasons. I think they have different types of "stories", with ME being a more linear "story" focused on the main conflict, while ME2 had a "story" that delved into the characters involved in the conflict more. Personally I didn't like the characters from ME nearly as much as I did the ones from ME2, except Garrus and Tali of course.

@UntoTheBreach24 While in ME2 the combat was much better, the story was nowhere near as grand as the first. Because of 'middle game sydrome' you can't really do anything really big so you end up having about 5 missions relevant to the plot(the collector missions) and everything else is picking up crew members and then playing therapist and solving there problems.The big issue is is that compared to saving the citadel from Saren & Sovereign ME2 feels like a sidequest.

Mass Effect is always my go-to example when I argue that video games can be just as emotionally involving as any movie or book.

It's unfortunate that not nearly enough people realize that like film or literature, video games can be an art form. They can be more than "kill all of enemy A to beat the level."

They can be engaging and intricate stories filled with and fueled by emotion and masterful craftsmanship, and it is unfortunate that they have a relatively negative stigma in our society.
