Sad thing that happens with absinthe makers. Sebor used to be good, but the new owner makes crap. Pernod used to be considered the standard, now it's one of the worst. Czech absinthe + Czech ritual = crap absinthe. These idiots push high thujone contents and fire to sell their product.
I love stupid dumbshit dope-fiend mystique. No one mentions the obvious. First off, you'll observe in the film Depp is shown using an eyedropper with Laudnaum to douse the sugar cube, he carmalizes it, then drops it into straight Absinthe, unlouched. This was a practice to enhance the drug of choice, in this case an opiate derivative with Absinthe. Otherwise, Absinthe possesses no hallucinagens. Put morphine in your spirit of choice and you would get the same results, dope fiends!
So much bullshit mythology surround Absinthe, even today in the 21st century. It contains no hallucinogenic derivatives and therefore produces no hallucinations. It's effects are no different from other alcoholic beverages. Any hallucinations are the result of placebo and suggestion.
The "Original Absinthe" from the 1800th century is nothing compared to the Absinthe you can get nowadays. A study has shown that a original recipe from 1899 has 4.3 mg/L thujone. Today you can get Absinthe with 111 Mg/L thujone, and 75.5% Alcohol (151 proof) (see the Zele Premium Absinthe).
Although I've tried Absinthe once, I've never actually purchased a bottle. But with that being said, when I do, I'm not going to screw around, I'm buying a bottle of Jade Edouard...end of story.
Czech Absinthe is swill...and if the Absinthe is good, you will not need to use the Bohemian method of Louching. To the uploader, you have said "Are any of you actually Absinthe producers?" My family has been producing Absinthe for over 100 years, for a VERY well known and respected maker of true Absinthe...Not wormwood macerated in strong vodka.
From Hell was a shitty adaptation of a good comic, Sebora is a shit drink that tries and fails to imitate real absinthe, and the Fire Method is a shitty way of drinking that was propagated by the sellers of shitty wormwood vodka.
The only thing Not Shit about this video is Johnny Depp, who is a very good actor and should have known better.
@IlStefan i agreeeeeee! shouldve at least done a little more research on the drink before they let such a brilliant mind produce such a rediculous scene
Technically, fire was never used ever, I think it's something that has been started very recently on the count of absinthe's popularity being raised once more. You should never light it on fire, although romantic, very distasteful and not correct, plus dangerous :)
Dualfighter: HI, I've never had Absinthe before, and was curious about the different prep rituals. My dad was familiar with the normal method: 1 oz green fairy/pour water over cube. But whats the reason for carmelizing the sugar?
Bohemian-style absinth lacks much of the herbal profile and density of authentic absinthe, including the constituents that create the louche. Since this renders Czech style absinth unusable for the traditional method of preparation, a modern ritual involving fire was created.
So Czech style absinthe is closest to the authentic style, or is it THE authentic style? I wasn't aware there were different makes of absinthe...but again, I wasn't familiar with the drink entirely to begin with. =) and the labels differ from czech to bohemian right? just want to know what I'm buying for future reference. =) thank you Dual fighter!
There are plenty of excellent French or Swiss absinthe :o)
Most of the remaining distilleries who made absinthe before it was banned in 1915 for France and 1910 for Switzerland, did look for antique recipies in their archives and offer traditional distilled absinthe, except the most famous, Pernod :o(
Don't forget that absinthe was still clandestinely distilled during the ban in the Val-de-Travers, where it was born in the 17th century ;o)
In the fire ritual, absinth is poured into a glass, and a sugar cube on a slotted spoon is placed over the glass. The sugar cube is then soaked with absinth and is set on fire. The cube is then dropped into the absinth, setting it ablaze. Then water is poured over the flame until it goes out. Usually, a 1:1 ratio of water to absinth is used.
This procedure produces a minor simulation of the louche that is seen in traditional absinthe, and the low water-to-alcohol ratio increases the strength of the resulting drink. (A traditional absinthe drink is diluted with water to a ratio between 3:1 and 5:1.) in other words carmelization will help the sugar mix better then to just mix pure sugar into the drink itself. Hope this helped. :)
Ah, gotcha. THANK YOU!!! it helped! =) I'm not exactly the strongest or most durable lush, but it's cool to at least know how to serve it right. If anything it'll be cool to have a bottle for display, and have this on like an attached note or something.
Hell no!!!! They said Johnny Depp came up with it for his movie From Hell. Most of the Absinthe sites and museums also said this. Damn you Johnny Depp!!!!!!!
alcohol is VERY flammable. you have to watch it when the inflamed cube drips down and sets it on fire as well, just blow it out so the alcohol doesn't become the expensive wick and burn it all away, then relight the cube if you can. I'm just curious about the ritual, why fire it up at all? What does caramelizing do? =)
by caramelizing the cube, you add flavour... by caramelizing anything really. caramelization helps to release sugars and draw them to the surface... do not confuse caramelizing with burning lol
you can get real 35mg thujon per liter absinthe shipped distilled from all over the world fantastic products plus everything need for the ritual and its legal
Absinthe has been banned for decades in Europe too. So to say the Europeans are producing the "real" thing compared to American-produced absinthe is just ignorant snobbery. European Absinthe producers are startup distillers too, just like in the U.S. It's no guarantee of quality/authenticity just because it's a French or Swiss, and the opposite isn't true just because it's American. Check out the individual brands, regardless of country. U.S.-made Marteau is the match of any Euro brand.
absinthe the real stuff is made in france and switzerland and should ''louche'' the USA: According to the FDA an amount of 10mg thujon per litre pure alcohol is legal. In the european union 35mg are legal. That is the difference between US Absinthes, for example like Lucid, St. Georges, Tournament Vert or the US Kubler version
ya i drank some bogus absinthe in tijuana..i thought i was getting the real deal but i think it was cough syrup..they were promoting it outside and gave me the only reason to walk into the bar; what a sham wheres the real stuff at?
There are absolutely no oils used to produce Sebor unlike most of the other 'Absinthes' on the market which are simply anise flavoured spirits with wormwood extract added at the end. The louche (cloudiness) caused by the addition of water is the herbs coming out of solution. The freeze filter technology used at the distillery helps to hold the herbs into solution and is a technique we have added to improve the spirit.
You couldn't be more wrong. Are any of you actually Absinthe producers? Sebor Absinth is an entirely natural product made from 13 herbs, alcohol and water. The herbs are grown next to the distillery and the water comes from a mountain spring. Each batch of Sebor is hand made and overseen by the master distiller, then laboratory tested to ensure that it contains 10mg/kg of thujone.
@seborgreenfairy " then laboratory tested to ensure that it contains 10mg/kg of thujone." Ahahaha, it's like selling wine with "ao dudes, it contains 10mg/l tannine, it's the real deal, don't fall for low-tannine wines" :D
I've drank thujone-overdosed steeps and nothing happened. Even fennel kicks more than wormwood, from what I've experienced. No wonder the French moderate fenchone content, too:)
@slaynpsicho Yes it should be that way, but I still suppose Sebor wanted to ensure us about the 10 mg actually present. That would either mean they use wormwood oil instead of wormwood (so they can set the thujone level artifically), or they test each batch with gas chromatography, which would be pretty expensive. (And after that, they'd have to blend different batches to set a 10mg/kg level.)
Can one of you Absinthe scholars give me a name of the best Absinthe and where I might purchase it? I live in the States so I know I can't find it here. I was fooled once and bought a bottle of Absente (NASTY LIQUID SYRUP) that was a BAD inexperience. Then I found a place selling Absinthe "kits" you mix with Vodka (just something else to pour down the sink. Anyway, PLEASE give me a name.
Don't buy kits or escence or anything but Swiss or French Absinthe - I get it shipped to my folks in Mexico and I go down there to pick it up. The Absinthe sold in America and Canada is yucky - it is like comparing piss water to Perrier. Go with the real stuff or not at all.
This is awesome! and Johnny Depp really drinks Absinthe, I just read that him and Marilyn Manson hung out on New Years 2000 drinking it and waiting for the Apocolypse :)

What is not shown in this vidéo is that he puts laudanum on the sugar.
Flaming the sugar destroys some poison effects of laudanum.
This is the only reason why.
Flaming is a nonsense as it burns alcohol...
And don't forget that this is only a movie, and there is no existing historical evidence that absinthe was used that way.
Drink traditionaly distilled absinthe, better than "wormwood aromatised vodka" :oP
