Just the absolute BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST Time of my life, London 1984 /1988 the soundtrack to my life back then, the friends i made listening to The Smiths are still and will always be, friends for life....................
Some of the greatest music of the times, so under appreciated, so misunderstood at the time by mainstream records companies, thats why the Smiths are probably one of those bands that best described what it was to grow up in those times. So fortunate to be able to be able to see them in the US when they first came over.
I'm 15 and I just discovered this band! Wish I listened to this music before, but since I was raised during this era I've been exposed to such bad music! Thank god for the internet!
Discovered this after hearing the Mark Ronson/Daniel Merriweather cover - which I adore btw. But I always do my homework; how interesting to hear two completely different versions of the same great song! The lyrics still have me trippin. :)
the world is still not ready for this, and probably wont be,i first heard smiths in 1985,some bands you tire of,this one i never did,at 40 with 3000 records, morrisey is in top 5,up there with life/mind altering music is crass,dk,cult,and....pil
The Smiths are great. All their songs are great. Why? Because nobody--I mean nobody--sounded like The Smiths when they hit the scene. Nobody sang like Steven Morrissey. Nobody played guitar like Johnny Marr. Their influence on music is still being felt today (12/26/2010). They are quite simply the most original band that has ever walked this Earth.
I was detained, Iwas restrained And broke my spleen and broke my knee and then he really lays into me. Friday night in out-patients. WHo said I'd lied to her? Who said I lied because I never I never"
I can even interpret it as the MedEvac flight out. And my first marriage going to shit while in Iraq...
Just like Shakespear. The specifics might change but the basic story is a pretty solid pattern.
How can anyone listen to garbage like Hip hop or pop??!?!?!
LOL I love how many thumbs down I got there for saying how much I like the other version :P I wasn't trying to bait people, but maybe I should next time- seeing as people are obviously incapable of lifting thier sorry fingers and typing a reponse, save just one person ;)

I love the Mark Ronson & Daniel Merriweather version :)
And it's not because I don't love retro music at all, so don't jump down my throat. I just think Daniel Merriweather has a fantastic voice, and this song showcases it brilliantly!
If I were to write in a poem "I still love you, slightly, only slightly less than I used to", it would most probably sound like shite. Morrissey gets away with it - he knows exactly how to spin the banal and the sublime together with a strong dose of humour and bathos - that's why I love him. To bits.
I feel ridiculus for not knowing Mark Ronson covered this song.... but in my defense, I wasn't even born when The Smith's were around =/

The guitar is great. To get this powerful sound, Marr was dropping knifes with a metal handle on the guitar.
