1) Not that kid's school.

2) Wasn't about bullying so much as the teacher's statement that other students' expressions (one a confederate belt buckle, another a statement of his own nonviolent, nondirected view that he can't accept gay peers) merited a suspension.

That said, the kid's speech was definitely heroic and laudable. I don't /agree/ with it, I think the "bigoted" students are entitled to their views if they're not actively attacking others, but I respect it.

I am a 47 year old female teacher from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and I truly remember knowing exactly what was going on with the world from the time I was 13 or so. It is great to hear teens standing up for what is right and (hopefully) adults listening. I understand the free speech issue but it can't come at the safety and well being of other students. If this teacher felt the comments were hurtful to others, he did the right thing.

The teacher was separating a religion discussion from a "state funded" classroom. I think that politically, this was correct on his part, and good to remove the bully as well.

You are correct. By condoning bullying against a gay student, the administration of that school is saying that the gay student is somewhat less of a human than those engaging in the bullying. They are failing to see the gay student's humanity and most basic rights. This happened to the Jews and gays in Germany in the 1930s and 40s. I was hoping that we were moving in the opposite direction now that Germany headed in then. That teacher should sue.
