Yak 141 is an average plane. It still makes the same mistake that all bad VTOL aircraft designs have. Vertical lift engines. It has one big engine to push the plane and lift the back end, but behind the cockpit are more engines that only get used in VTOL mode. That is just extra weight.

The JSF F-35 has a fan that is powered by the one engine, so that arangement is lighter, but everyone admits the swiveling engine at the back is copied from the Yak 141.

The JF-17 can be compared with the Hal terjas and the F-16, but thats about it..seriously. its a lightweight fighter and would be taken to task by anything from the Gripen to the Rafale. Yak-141 is only a single engine jet. It would be a rival of F-35B, but not F-22A (T-50 would rather be a rival of F-22A). It is rumored to have low RCS design, but probably only semi-stealth. It will be ideal for Russia to provide Yak-141 for their version of F-35Bs for their "lo" version of 5th generation fighters. If Russian Forces uses it, probably other countries will be interested in buying it as well.

It could also be argued the x13 ( a tail sitter) was the first but it never worked properly.

Perhaps the Harrier was the first 'successful' VTOL jet fighter, France had the Dassault Mirage IIIV and Germany had its own jet similar to the starfighter (by 1963), but neither were worth pursuing.

Yakovlev pioneered the contra rotating exhaust, which F-35 JSF guys consulted them on. The Yakovlev 141 was disappointing as the Harrier in terms of a jet because VTOL or STVOL was in still in it infancy. They all suffered from limited range, loiter, payload, and huge infrared vulnerability.

But unlike the yaks, the Harrier had loads of money to be poured into it for refinedment and upkeep.
