@MrRustytrombone these piston systems advertise the AR-15 as having a flaw so they can offer you a product that fixes that nonexistant problem, if youre smart you wont buy into the gimmick and stick with direct impingement.. and keep your accuracy, with a piston your accuracy will drop to 1/4 or less of what it is now
@megadeth22885 dude attack the idea not the person. anyway u really arent that smart. if u were u would know piston is always better. i dont have to spend time cleaning my gun for hours like u do or clear a jam wen im getting shot at. wake up and open ur eyes the m4 is a piece of shit. its junk and a national disgrace. its accurate but is unreliable. there are better guns out there and u know it. why the m4 scored last in testing compared to piston guns. why are there full articles saying m4 sux

@ANIMExFAN2 listen kid.. go back to your call of duty world where you think you know what youre talking about, but you dont, all those you mentioned that actually do use pistons, none are as accurate as an M16.. youd know that if you werent an idiot, and youd also know a G3 doesnt use a piston either if you werent an idiot

@megadeth22885 apparently u did no research and have no proof and ur statements are either false or ur opinion. many countries if not most have better guns than we do.simply cuz they use piston. the marines did testing and found out the m16 is better than m4. then recently the army did another test and the m4 did the worse compared to piston guns. again do research and have proof.

@ANIMExFAN2 does anyone here take this 15 year old kid seriously? its apparent hes never fired a gun before... any way we can ban this annoying idiot before he takes his dads gun to school?
direct impingement is the way to go... pistons are a marketing tool, by falsely accusing the direct impingement system, piston manufacturers can convince potential consumers that a problem exists... and to no suprise they offer a solution for the low low price of about $400.... is it really better? or is it just business?... just because a company says its something you need, doesnt mean its true
@megadeth22885 The gas piston system does prevent wear on your BCG. Especially if you run a lot of rounds through it. That is less maintenance you don't have to worry about. Sounds to me you went on some forums with die hard DI fans. DI does work but it does have it flaws. Main thing is debris or water getting in the gas tube. Even now military special forces use gas piston M4's chambered in 6.8. If I were a soldier that would be less time consuming cleaning for me to worry about while in war.
@Halo2100 youre not military, never will be.. im sure gas piston manufacturers boast about special forces using them, but in reality they dont, special forces using the M4 still use the direct impingement system, i know quite a few guys who are former and current special forces... in fact thats where id be now if i wasnt medically disqualified.
@megadeth22885 I did come close to getting in the military, but what stopped me was that I saw the image of my deceased mother looking at me from down the hall after the recruiter left my home. It was plain as day and it was that look of something bad will happen in her face that stopped me.
@Halo2100 pistons dont increase reliability, any fouling that occurs is still there, water can still get into the piston, but youre not even going to get water into a DI tube unless you soak it.. and it has very little effects on the action.. about the only thing a piston increases is your weight, and the difficulty of hitting targets further down range as it noticably decreases accuracy
@megadeth22885 "you're not even going to get water into a DI tube unless you soak it".
You just said the exact reason why military special forces are adopting the piston system. Everything gets soaked with navy seals. "pistons don't increase reliability, any fouling that occurs is still there"
Really? I guess AK's had other attributes that made it the number 1 reliable rifle in the world. I've shot both AR and AK and the AK BCG and receiver needed hardly any cleaning compared to the AR.
@Halo2100 How can you say what 'SF' uses. That is only hearsay.
There is a reason DI is king. Exceptional 'controllability'. Zero muzzle rise.
I would be very suprised if SF were staking their lives on untested and problematic AR piston guns compared to the sickeningly accurate, durable and reliable tier 1 AR manafacturers like Noveske, LMT, Colt BCM etc.
Sure DI has problems, but we know exactly what they are and what we can do to prevent it.
@jebustheone It was recently on the military channel on new weapons that are being deployed for use. One of them happen to be a piston M4 chambered in 6.8.
@megadeth22885 u have to be the most ignorant DI fan here. pistons make the gun more reliable which mean less cleaning and more shooting. how many guns u know that use DI besides SR-25, m16 and m4. exactly. would i trust my life with a DI gun. hell no. why do u think delta force use hk416 why do u think most of the world use piston. the Di system was flawed from the start and u know it
@ANIMExFAN2 aah, another kiddie who buys into the marketing, and assumes DI is flawed because an advertisement says so, a DI M4 will go 5,000 rounds before needing a cleaning, thats plenty, and more isnt worth cutting your accuracy into about 1/4 for.. but i guess id expect an idiot from someone named "anime fan"
@megadeth22885 LOOK HERE WHO CARES YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT IMA GIRL OK? MY BROTHER WHO 17 WHO WROTE THAT. HE GO ON YOUTUBE AND WATCH HIS WAR OR GUN VIDEOS AND COMMENT ON THEM.IM 15 BY THE WAY SO DONT CALL MY BROTHER A KID THAT. AND LOOK THAT SHOWS HOW IGNORANT YOU ARE GETTING TOLD BY ME A GIRL NOW LEAVE ME ALONE.
@ANIMExFAN2 listen... your brother isnt old enough to own an AR-15, or an M16, and he damn sure doesnt know a thing about the design or engineering of one... so its best you and him both shut the hell up
so let me get this straight.. all the gas piston kit is is a damn metal tube, a steel rod, and a slight modification you can make to a pre-existing bolt carrier?.... and they want $450 for these?... absolutely HILARIOUS, ill just make my own for $20
@C172Pilotdude truth about gas pistons.. a DI AR-15 will last 5k-10k rounds before a failure from fouling, is more accurate than a gas piston system, and lasts just as long in mud.. if mud gets into the receiver.. direct impingement, piston, it doesnt matter... and that piston slamming back and forth causes the barrel to whiplash around throwing off your accuracy.. $275 to neuter your AR-15.. have fun
@megadeth22885 No one realizes that the DI system blows the BCG straight back thats why they think the convesion wonderfull. I have found that with M855 ball I can go through about 2000ish before needing to wipe off the bolt. I installed the failzero BCG and a heavier buffer and am right now at about 3800 rounds and have not taken down the BCG yet. Im going to wait for it to foul completely.
@megadeth22885 It's a little bit more to it than that but yes you're basically right.
Don't forget that most of the kits come with a FA carrier with the gas key removed, so you've got to figure in the $150 ish for the BC. Gas piston ar15s have been around for decades.
@jebustheone good luck finding replacement parts when something breaks.. the DI AR-15 uses a simple thin metal tube you could find at a hardware store
@hangemhigh2000 The cmmg .22 kit will work with the gas piston kit. There is a setting for the gas system. Turn off the gas system and the .22 conversion kit will function with the gas piston retrofit kit.
That's a very subjective question. There are pros and cons on both sides. If either is better is subjective to the end user.
I have both DI and GP ARs. I have owned that version (old) of the CMMG retrofit, but I sold it and went with the Adams Arms because it's easier to field strip.
@skyungjae / Does the bolt carrier on the CMMG kit use the shrouded firing pin ? Also what is the old type likes versus the one. Any help would be great.yl
You can use the firing pin from a standard BCG. The difference between the new and old are simply updates in the design. The clamp on gas block isn't two separate pieces anymore and is much slimmer. The piston plug can adjusted for gas pressure and can be removed without special tools. Also, it doesn't have a small washer to lose. The one piece BC has the counter weight and grooves on the back now too. That's mainly it.
I do a lot of work with the AR15/M16series of rifles, I recently installed one of these kits on a customer's rifle and had an odd occurrence, It would not cycle a particular brand of ammunition I believe it was an SS109 spec. round produced in Yugoslavia. The gun cycled everything else from winchester to PMC & even Wolf flawlessly.
But the Yugo ammo functioned fine in all of my direct impingement guns.
Possibly with Gunsmithing. The CMMG kit comes with specialized handguard which are clearance for the system, an aftermarket tube/handguard will have to have a minimum ID of 2.1.
This (a gas piston) would have saved countless American lives in Vietnam.
