@bluworm I finished it on the weekend and it was based on "The Dreams in the Witch House". Keziah Mason and geometry play a big part in the plot. I found in in a top 10 horror list and it didn't disappoint.
Hah, this was pretty great. I was enamored by the narration, then all of a sudden, POOF! Jump scare from the rat-creature. I love the HP Lovecraft story, and I also enjoy the episode of Masters of Horror based on the story, and I must say, the rat you made was more frightening than the Masters of Horror version and my imagination's version combined. I don't even wanna imagine how scary it would be had the rat talked...
So, yeah. Great video; if there were stars on Youtube, you'd get 5. =D
@TheVillainOfThisTale Thanks!! It's a great, soothing narration isn't it. Jennifer did it long before I wanted to make this film. She let me use it, and here you have the result. I'm pretty happy with how Mr Jenkin turned out. It was my first experiment with making a silicone head. I thought the Brown Jenkin of "Masters" was pretty OK, but I'm always let down by how they "update" and "improve" Lovecraft's stories.
Thanks! Lovecraft should be read by young people, it'll stay with them for the rest of their lives. Though, not all will like him. Those who do will stick to old H P for life. There's nothing else like him, despite all the imitators.
I'm working with a Lovecraft project right now and I have at least one more planned for 2010. And I'm attempting to animate a Shoggoth for a friend's film project!
Graham Masterton wrote a book based on Lovecraft's story. It's called, "Prey." It seems to simply be a more modernized version...
Oh, and Lovecraft is buried about 20-30 minutes from where I live. There is a tombstone but it is not actually associated with his grave in the cemetery because they want to throw off the weirdos who they fear will dig it up...
Thanks for that info! Then you're practically a neighbor to old HP. I've heard about the graverobbing scare concerning him. The strategically misplaced tombstone is probably a smart move.
The reason is supposed to be 2 fold. One, it was as I said, to keep weirdos away from his grave. Another reason was based on the idea that he didn't have a stone shortly after he died, as he didn't have the money. It seems he died having no idea he would become as popular as he did, and only after his death was there money given for a proper tombstone.
Thank you! I think the stop motion did the job here. I'm not the best animator in the world, but the technique in itself does achieve a certain creepiness.
Looks better than the one in Stuart Gordon's Masters of Horror episode, which was done by professionals. It was an actor with fur glued to his face! I love stop-motion.
Well, thanks for that! I thought Brown jenkin was OK in that episode, but I didn't really like how they (as usual) messed up the story by adding/changing stuff and updating it to modern times. Lovecraft films should be period pieces in my humble opinion. I just wanted to make this character as a puppet and see if I could bring him to life.
very interesting little guy, i liked him/her alot! Just thinking of Lovecraft, maybe it would be really something to do a film about cathuhlu(sorry about spelling)
Perfectly eerie! What a brilliant film, Richard! The Lovecraftian touches you included really bring his story to life here. I particularly loved the choice of opening the film zoomed in on the fear-stricken eyes of Walter Gilman. The amount of movement you managed to put in Brown Jenkin's face and paws was spectacular! I am honoured to have been able to provide the narration here and am so thrilled to see one of my favourite Lovecraft stories in stop-motion. Thank you! =)
Many, many thanks! Your reading of the text was the inspiration for this project, and there wouldn't be a film or a Jenkin puppet without it. So know that you inspire others (probably daily) with your own creativity. So the honur is truly mine! :D
Great film, just excellent. The animation is done really well 10/10 (especially the shadow and the first appearance of the rodent). That nose jiggle thing made it look like a real rat!
Also how did you solve the fur problem? It didnt move at all.
Thanks! The fur does move a bit, but I grabbed the part of the puppet not facing the camera while animating. i also held on to its tail and its forehead.
Well, I saw him this morning, standing on a shelf with some of my other puppets ;)
No; this is a purely fictional character, but (in the world of the story) he's probably still running around Gilman's old apartment, driving new tennants mad!
I'm just reading Prey By Graham Masterton. It pays homage to HP Lovecraft and Brown Jenkin. An excellent read.

@storyb4bed I really like Graham Masterton, but I haven't gotten around to "Prey" yet. Sounds like I should take a look. Thanks for the tip!

Congratrulations, very good job. I showed it to my daughter, for I'm trying to get her to read more, Lovecraft's mind was very prolific.

Great Job! I always hoped someone would do BrownJenkin justice. Just as creppy and distrubing as I imagined.

Thank you! He's a very good little monster character and I always thought he'd make a great stop-motion puppet.

Very effective and creepy. Your stop motion gave Brown Jenkin that realistic "rodent quiver." I like the to-the-point duration too.

Thanks! And just one last thing. If i cant find ball joints what would i use that is just as good?

How about wire, it just as good and both me and Richard use it.
I know others say you can only use ball and socket, but wire can be just as good.
