The series on the whole was great. However, I was quite amazed that reggae was not mentioned in a programme focussing upon the role of bass. Reggae bass sounds and patterns are a massive influence on pop music.
Before this video, I actually never connected a run (musically) with a run (physically)! That organist seems to be running out his bass runs on those pedals! XD
pay attention... bass means the harmonic, melodic and structural relationship of the bass sound to the rest of the piece... not just the sound itself...
Another fabulous doco. This material is not only invaluable for students, but is presented in such a way it should catch their attention.
This segment includes Richard Strauss' "Also Sprake Zarathustra", Charles Mingus' "Haitian Fight Song, Elvis Costello's "I don't want to go to Chelsea", Saint Saens "The Elephant", even Mation Army "White Stripes", John Williams "Theme from Jaws", Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side", The Supremes "Baby Love".
Does anyone know the song on 0:48?

UM this is wrong. The main note in a chord is not its tonic, it's its root. The lowest note in a chord is not its root, its the bass.

If the harpsichord was a guy I'd punch his nuts until vagina.

Seriously now... We all know that first instrument was designed by Dr Seuss. Oh and when playing your organ, you're bound to jerk your root around.

Whenever I hear the intro for Also Sprach Zarathustra, my eyes automatically start leaking in a good way.

Looks at the importance of tonality in the development of bass. Technology - the organ was the first instrument to provide a deep bass.
Concludes with the dazzling organ footwork of Enrico Rossi's "Etude Symphonique".
