  • Nice Drumsolo

  • I love it when people hate someone as great as Simon is,probably because they cannot do what he can

  • It's so strange to see heel down for the Kick rhythms

  • fuuuuuukkkkkk his tom and snare sound here is exceptional.

  • What can I say ? Incredible drummer.

  • Simon has my deepest respect; I'll never be able to get even close to his level. But call this drumsolo "incredible creative" is way too much. Listen to Terry Bozzio's "Samba Ousada" and you'll know why.

  • @vangorkj both are great drummers....Jeff Beck doesnt pick crappy drummers to play with him....Simon's double bass drumming is supreme

  • @mariodeadonvoice Fully agree on all 3 points.

  • Excellent vid. of one of my all time Favorite drummers . Thank you Sabiano.

  • @MrMushu123 that cant do 260 941 people lol

  • @truththespeaker,That is the understatement of the year.He is purely UNREAL!

  • This just in! I cannot do this.

  • wait a sec... i have that drum throne!! :D

  • wow his kit hasn't changed at ALL in like 30 years

  • @monkeytheman26 well... if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

  • @shortskrts69 good point! :)

  • simon the great drummer

  • well he definitely owns it, just looking at this, it strikes as he is an unbelievably hard work and practicer... this is what comes out when he's free-flowing, after all that practice

  • I have, and use the same exact bass drum pedals. Tama Flexie Fliers. Love them, they have great action, incredibly smooth and lightning fast. One of the best pedals I have ever used.

  • socks over leggings for the win!!!

  • 15 people cant do this on the drums

  • @MrMushu123 ohh i bet almost everybody can't do that on drums

  • @c0d3x001 im sure sume can

  • @MrMushu123 I'm sure the other 681 can't do it either! hahahaha just kidding

  • @MrMushu123 zici k tu poti bagamias pula-n morti tai

  • @MrMushu123 no one can...

  • @MrMushu123 1 person can do this on drums and 733 people really like it.

  • @MrMushu123 i'm sure it's a lot more than that.

  • @MrMushu123 a more accurate assumption is that 15 people can do this

  • @MrMushu123 And 751 people can?

  • @MrMushu123 I think that number is closer to 15! (factorial) :)

  • @MrMushu123 No one can..

  • @fabriciusbjerre mmhmmmmm simon phillips can

  • @MrMushu123 i dont hink you can either :D

  • @MrMushu123 the number is much higher

  • @MrMushu123 I think only 15 people IN THE WORLD could play this... xD

  • lol dick head dressed in sports gear to play drums, youre not running a marathon chap. Whatever works tho, better drummer than me.

  • @ccfcobro Drumming is a very athletic activity and we have to be comfortable first and foremost.

  • 15 virus

  • He just never runs out of ideas .... his bag of tricks is bottomless

  • This guy utilizes every drum he has so sensibly!

  • 15 people don't understand drums at all.

  • VicFirth for me ...olol

  • does every drummer on the planet use Promark sticks? That company must be buying a small country by now..

  • @EdgeStormcrow Actually I think Vic Firth has a bigger share of the market. Also your observation might be more based on the style of music you listen too.

  • 1:08 A little nod to Steve Gadd ;)

  • <3 <3 <3

  • :D ♥

  • ♥ . ♥

  • when it shows the camera angle of his feet, it looks like he's wearing tights

  • @conterooski Because he is!!

  • This Guy Simon Phillips has impeccable timing ...like WHooooa! Anybody remember this cat on the Stanley Clarke 1980 "Rocks Pebbles and Sand" album??

That's how I knew he was a BAAADDD MO FOFO! Anyway thanks for the post.

  • 1 of the greatest

  • Forget what hes got, what he uses and what ifs....he kicks ass. Simple....for him

  • There are so many drummers to learn from Simon Rocks, I am inspired by him, but you can't argue too much that Buddy Rich rules the drum throne. Simon himself was in awe of this guy and at 61 he still smoked everyone else.

  • he just so good. love those 4 racks toms

  • ANYBODY KNOW WHAT STICK SIZE HE USES?

  • @johnbambammorgan

He Pro Mark 707 Simon Phillips Signature Series

  • @johnbambammorgan

He uses Pro Mark 707 Simon Phillips Signature Series

  • @porcaro4ever , Thank you kindly for that Information. Peace!

  • I want octobons

  • i always seem to forget about this video and then i come across it and am reminded of how damn good it is

  • i can play till 1:30!

    :))

  • @littletravis1 Nice, so what does he plays at 1:10?

  • Octobans. The are Japanise drums made especially by Tama. Simon Phillips has them, Stewart Copeland of the Police has them, In fact he was the first person to have them as they where made persifically for him then others followed. Simon your a genius a real Drum God and after Stewart Copeland your my drum god, Keep drumming my fellow ginger.

  • I wonder what age he started playing at?

  • Simon Philips is the top-session drummer of our century.. Man , go listen to " There and Back " Jeff Beck .. " Star Cycle " .. are you kidding ? insane !!... Oh, for you metal -dudes : Simon Philips played on all of ' Sin after Sin " album by Judas Priest ...This guy's a stylist , and so very rhythmic..

  • or the drum track on the non-existent cool prog song, of course ... solo, very pleasant to listen to.

  • I remember him in 'the who' back then he wasn't that awesome!

    But now! damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • Only a few drummers play right-handed in a left-handed way... Simon is an excellent example of this... And he plays the bass drums with his heels down...!!! Awesome solos and perfect timing. Young drummers should take a look at the Original Masters before they could be "proud" the way they play... A drummer never ends learning!!!

  • Dont mess with rebok's and spandeX! and a head band to top it off

  • @rcacad don't forget the white socks. can't mess with them either

  • Dont mess with rebok's and spandeX!

  • great solo! btw what are those long slim drums called where he plays that drip fill on?

  • @THEREALSLIMFISHY Octobans.

  • I've seen him live with Mike Oldfield, Toto and his band. His solos are spectacular, though sometimes not as musical as Weckl's, for example (I'm not talking about this one, which is one of his best). But for me it's his grooves and fills that set him apart: he's a *musician* who plays for, with and in the band and the song. He LISTENS to the other guys. In that area he's my favourite and I think very few come even close. Check him out with Los Lobotomys in Hero with 1000 eyes. Perfection.

  • Stanley Clarke's "Rocks, Pebbles and Sand" is an excellent show of his skills as well.

  • 3:15 My Favorite part: how he used that ride cymbal and how it was on time with the kick drum.

  • Phillips, Bozzio, Peart....incredibly creative drummers with huge drumsets. I could watch them all day.

  • one word *extroadinary. makes the impossible look easy (o:

  • Best solo I seen in a while. Never forget the masters! Not many new drummers can pull this off, its all to much speed and double bass drumming... this is so musical.

And the sound! I played Tama from -86 to -96. Maybe I should buy them again...;-)

  • @nengstro If u do get some new Tama drums, get Starclassic...best drums EVER!!!

  • this is amazing what a master ............i bow down

  • *video ends* Mind is blown.

  • reeboks ftw

  • Wow, the best drum sound I ever heard !! What Tama ?

  • @DorianeDrums2 Tama Artstar II from about 1998-1992

  • @firesign72 1988-1992 you mean ? Tama Artstar were awesome as starclassic are now ;)

  • fuckin nasty period.

  • Didn't he play with Judas priest for a while? Or was that another Simon Phillips?

  • @bergerfry He played with a lot of the early heavy metal groups including, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, MSG, Ian Gillan, Nazareth etc etc

  • FANTASTIC HIHAT SOUND !!

  • My favourite at 4:52

  • When I first heard his work with Phil Manzanara and 801, I was sold. The Hi-hat work on "Initial Speed" is awesome.

  • YAY!!

  • 13 a-holes that want to be "that guy".

  • 3:15 he KILLED that ride cymbal!

  • One of the greatest drummer of all time. And Toto has it.

  • This solo has it all, Syncopation, Groove, time, feel and most importantly a musical story. This is a well composed solo. Unlike other drummers that idiots think are the best and only play 47 stroke rolls over and over as their "solo"

  • THAT SNARE SOUNDS AWESOME!!!

  • I just discovered his videos. (I'm a Bruford, Carl Palmer fan normally) I like this guy more than most drummers, who i hate.

  • THIS IS BORING

  • Awesome!!!

  • Simon is awesome!!!!

  • Joey Jordison and Travis Barker and Meg White would smoke this guy...

    /sarcasm

  • lets hear a hoorah for open handed drummers like simon and i. even though im nowhere near simons skills

  • Pardon my ignorance, but what makes his drumming in this so highly regarded? Not trying to take away from his skill. Just trying to understand.

  • @nicholo85 I agree that the title is a bit misleading. This is not "incredibly" creative. And what are the headphones for? Does he have a click track going??

  • @nicholo85 The musical compositions in his drumming. It's much more than just randomly ritting some drums and cymbals.

  • @nicholo85 Nearly 40 years of amazing recorded work. It can't be summed up in one solo. Often a drummers best work is displayed in how they play their part in a band, and whilst I enjoy watching any footage of Simon, it's in actual tracks like RMS's 'Malindi', or the Who's live 'I Can't Explain' or Russ Ballards 'Voices' or Mike Oldfields 'Crises' tor Jeff Becks 'The Pump" that his inventive genius and energy shine through.

  • @harnois75 Good point....but am I to understand that's not Keith Moon on 'Can't Explain'?

  • @jamesc1966 Keith Moon played on the recorded version of course, but if you search on youtube for The Who - Dallas 1989, you will find a great Simon Phillips concert that was part of the Who's 25th anniversary tour - only audio unfortunately. I Can't Explain is there and it showcases the crisp, precise, aggressive playing and inventive fills that mark out Simon's playing.

  • @harnois75 Good point....but am I to understand that's not Keith Moon on 'Can't Explain'? And is Simon left-handed?

  • @jamesc1966 No, Simon is not left handed, he plays open handed and was first influenced to do so by aesthetics. After seeing Billy Cobham, Simon chose to play a double bass drum kit, with four mounted toms, but with the hi-hat positioned for the more common cross over style, ie quite high, it made the toms look awkward. So, no doubt also influenced by Cobham, he switched to open handed and lowered the hi-hat almost level with the snare.

  • @harnois75 I noticed the references to open-handed technique, but I wasn't sure what that meant. Thanks for your reply! Now I'm even more in awe. Many of my favorite players seem to have an innate fluidity that makes the music really dance....I'm guessing that's the jazz influence. I think of it as bending time, in a way. Many rock/metal drummers seem to have a more strict, rigid time feel....at least to me. There are exceptions, of course (Danny Carey !).

  • Footwork is incredible! Awesome hand/feet coordination! WOW!!!! He makes those octobans sing!

  • 13 people are MAD that they can play this good..!

  • Is he gonna play the drums or some tennis?

  • TOTO is an awesome band!!! great musicians

  • @MrLoveDrums Barker can't play even if you don't compare him to Simon.

  • 6:22 AMAZING!!!

  • Having put in 20 years touring as a pro drum tech with some of the best guys on the planet I'm SOOOOOO burned out on drum solo's.... however, I will watch Simon all day long. Worked for him at ONE show and will NEVER forget it.

The guy blows the mind, especially if you play at an advanced level & can comprehend exactly what he is doing. Sometimes you just gotta laugh at how way beyond 99.9% of even the pro drummers he is when he tosses out stuff like the last 30 seconds of this solo shows.

  • @MrLoveDrums

    barker is an asshole!

    XD

  • This guy is amazing. He wasted his time in Toto the same way Steve Smith wasted his time in Journey. These guys were far too talented for their bands, but I'm sure the success and money was worth it. I just wish they were doing more mainstream work so their drumming could be heard by a great deal more people. All the emphasis wouldn't be put on Joey Jordinson and Mark Portnoy - although they a great deal of talent themselves. They don't have as much style though.

  • @cbr1000drummer i love you for saying mark portnoy. thanks

  • Those toms sound SEEEEEEXXXXYYYYYYYYYYY!!!

  • @TheWhisperingCactus

A bassdrum Sounds the best as less tone as possible but at the point of people putting bedding sets in their kick u r right

  • But, I thought Travis Barker is "da bestest evarrr ??!!!1!1"

    I'm joking, of course. :)

  • Dear TAMA, Bring back the Artstars!

  • Love his drumming!

  • Mmm, wide open kick drums. That's how real drummers do it.

  • @TheWhisperingCactus He muffles his kicks.

  • @TheWhisperingCactus Indeed, with one towel on the back head. That's wide open as far as I'm concerned.. all too many people shove entire bedding sets into their drums and call it tone. Here you can see just how great a kick sounds when it's tuned well and allowed to resonate!

  • @TheWhisperingCactus I agree. I love nothing better than to go to an arena show and hear/feel the incredibly powerful boom of an open kick

  • @Groovemaster2k Man I wish I could go back in time and hit up a Zeppelin show.. friggin' Bonzo's kick must have been like a explosion to hear live.

  • @TheWhisperingCactus yeah I've always thought about that. I wonder if his son does anything along that line when he plays live?

  • That's one sexy drumkit..!

  • QUE BUEN TRABAJO DEL SONIDISTA Y TECH DE LA BATERIA... PARA QUE HABLAR DE SIMON, EXCELENTE... INSANE!!!

  • I love Artstars....

  • just do it ;-))

  • Essas meias brancas por cima da calça queimam o filme de qualquer um, bicho. Alguém avise o Simon, please! HA!

  • Real men wear tights.

  • Incredibly Creative Clothing as well ;)

  • One of my favorite drummers of all time his work on judas priest sin after sin was great

  • he must have calves of steel

  • Amazing continuity!

  • is he left handed playing on a righty kit? i did that for about a year before i just set up lefty crossover

  • @cph42594 its called open handed. lefty on a righty kit, with main bass foot on the right. real unique style of play, thats what i do.

  • 1:10 steve gadd :)

  • he almost sounds like the drummer in primus ( great band by the way)

  • @tikimojoe You might want to check Simon's bio, man. It's actually Primus' drummer who ALMOST sounds like Simon Phillips.

  • He's maybe the best, without any question. In the 80's he was THE Man of Tama-Drums. He was on every Commercial-Poster. I was at a workshop in '94 and ...i couldn't close my mouth anymore.

He worked for many musicians in very different styles. Mike Oldfield, The Who, Toto, Judas Priest and his own experimantal music. He plays drums since he was four and he plays it with his mind/head, not with pure energy. Another drummer like him is Pat Torpey (very underrated).

  • I really like how the bass drum plays the melody in the solo. Very musical!

  • Simon's been a beast for a long time as this obviously goes back quite a bit. Anybody who really know drumming knows they're watching a legend. He plays outrageous today as videos of him live with Toto have some stunning solos. His work with Pete Townshend is not to be overlooked either. I'm not saying he's the best, but his playing commands some serious respect.

  • Awesome! The Best!
