Very nice project. Is it my imagination, or are you doing a bit of pulse-width modulating at the beginning of this video? (If so, then does each LED have a single line driving it, or is this wired up in a matrix configuration? I would guess that, if it's a matrix, PWM would get a bit complicated.)

Visualizations? Who uses those anymore? XMPlay is one of the best music players, and if you absolutely need them, it supports Sonique format visualizations. Im sure that theyd have added Winamp vis support, but they were too busy making the app better instead.

Ive also heard a lot of good things about Foobar2000.

Winamp was indeed great back in 1997. Version 2 was terriffic and v3 wanst toooo bad. But then 5 terrific (commercialized) was unpleasant and many moved on.
