Between the choices listed I would opt for the S&W model 60. I dig .357 magnum over .38 special. 1 less round isn't that big of a deal for a CCW gun. I don't plan on extended gunfights daily, & if I did I would opt for my Glock. I also have lots of love for S&W revolvers. Colts are sweet too & I dig the Magnum Carry for that 6th shot. If the DA pull on your model 60 is an issue you could offload it to me Yankee! Otherwise send her off to get a trigger job & lighter springs. Just my $0.02 Cheers
Im not a gun type of person im more of a knife guy but i suggest carrying the least expensive, lightest gun it only takes you pulling a gun out to stop them from stealing your car only in really really rare occasions will you actually have to fire a gun in conclusion carry a light cheap gun that you won't mind if pocket change scratches and comfort is also important for its better to carry something lite everyday than a big chunk-o-metal thats all fancy and high caliber but uncomfortable that y
UPDATE: Looks like my EDC might not be any of these three guns. I dropped a chunk of change today on a Colt magnum Carry. It is basically a .357mag version of the Colt shown in this video. It is also DA/SA.
I would go with the Colt myself. Double action revolvers can easily get snagged on clothing. I couldn't bring myself to do any grinding on the hammer with such a beautiful pistol.
@Glockwork9 I am pretty comfortable doing customizing, but I would never grind on one of these either. I do have myself pretty well conditioned to draw with my thumb on the hammer. That reduced the snagging issue greatly. It is about the only good gun handling habit I do have. ;-)
@lhusby I believe the ones on the Smiths are badger grips. The ones on the Colt are ones I customized. I have a video on my channel that details them.
My uncle EDC's the Smith m60 and loves it. But if it were me I would EDC the Smith 640. For one it is a ,357, 2. It is a DAO. This means in a life threatening encounter there is one less thing to think about, (Cocking the hammer.) I have also heard that if you carry a revolver for protection and you have to use it, to NEVER cock to single action. But my choice is the S&W 640
Good question... Colt Detective Special. It's the best gun on the table. Has six shots. Better trigger pull, means hits on target.. Any of those shooters are all fine guns and will do the job, when called on. Just make sure you have one or more when the balloon goes up. Carry two it's twice the fun ! Think about carrying all three at once. : ) They are all winners! BTW: Do I win anything? lol : )
I'd choose the Colt. Overall, it's a great pkg for ME. Being a Southpaw, revolvers aren't exactly reload friendly, so an extra round on board is nice. The ergos of this DS are a +, too. The size/ weight helps w/recoil, the trigger is consistent & lite for a DAO, & ammo selection/pricing allows one to practice w/what you carry. 38s for the range & 357s for SD in smaller guns is not my idea of reliable SD consistency, either. YMMV
Model 60 with the single action capabilities, most definitely. Too many people knock the single action on a carry gun, thinking it's going to get them in trouble. But if you have to use teh gun, just pulling the trigger is already serious shit.
I would go with the S&W 640. The reliability is excellent with all three so no issues there. Personally, I would shelf the Colt and let it build value over the years. All three are beautiful
The 640. You will only have to shoot a .357 round thru it one time if the shot is placed. I used to carry a 340 AirLite SC (11.4 oz./.357, kicks like a mule). I'm rockin' a Glock 27 now (.40 cal baby Glock), carry the spare mag in a small digital camara pouch on my belt. The Glock carries better for me, it's all the same thickness. I shoot IDPA with my G-27, I'm not beating anybody but, I is gettin' perty good with it.
The colt because it looks the coolest and feeling cool and looking cool is part of life. And yeah no ones going to see it since it's concealed but you'll feel cool knowing its there.
Model 60 hands down. Has the firepower, conceals well, no hammer to catch. I would put some shock absorbing grips on it. That gun is going to be a beast to shoot. I have a S&W 640 in 357 Magnum and my 30 yr old son could not shoot more than two rounds cause his wrist hurt. And in a SHTF situation you will never go single action. You will do what you practice. Good Luck, all three beautiful weapons.
@FirearmPop .357 is the most uncomfortable round to shoot for me. I just hate them. I do think the wood grips work better for me though. The rubber one chap my hands badly. I can shoot .44mags more comfortably than the .357mags.
Hello Yankee , While I LOVE the 357 option . The Colt is my choice . I feel shot placement trumps power and the extra round on tap allows for a double tap on 3 threats . Plus should you be out of the fight . Your better half is more likely pick up your wheel gun and handle the recoil and stop the attack . Least point . The Colt has a cool factor that goes beyond its resale value .
640 if you pocket carry (concealed hammer), if in a holster on the belt etc...., the colt (extra round).
The real question though is are you going to be OK getting any of these revolvers scratched or worn, :-)
You have the absolutely nicest looking firearms. You would cringe if you saw how worn some of mine are, but my firearms are tools to me for the most part
@AJourneyOfYourSoul I do not mind wear. that is the good thing about stainless. It shows very little wear and is very hard to actually scratch. Any small wear or blemishes can be easily removed.
The Colt is the nicest - but if you were ever involved in a shooting - kiss it goodbye (at least for awhile until/if the police return it to you). My choice is the m640.
I think I'd go with the Colt because of the bobbed hammer and extra round. I think with 5 shots I'd feel undergunned going up against more than one assailant. I'd feel undergunned going up against any number of assailants with anything short of a tactical nuke from 3,000 miles away, but you know what I mean!
If I was going to carry .357, I'd say the Model 60. Shooting .357 mag in a high stress situation might make you get a case of the flinches, which is going to furthered by a double action pull. If you wanted to carry, .38, I'd say the Colt. The action on yours looks smooth as silk, it carries 6 rounds, and nothing to snag on when you pull it out. Personally, 6 rounds of .38 special should be fine in most situations, and if that wasn't going to do it, I doubt 5 rounds of .357 mag would.
I would say the S&W640. Because it lacks a hammer there would be less of a chance of it snagging on the draw. Chambered in .357mag/.38special, you have an option to choose what you want to carry.
